This book invites the reader to take a unique journey through the history of the Solar System, the Earth, its evolving biodiversity and ecosystems, and the current state of the planet. It is an attempt to stimulate the reader’s sense of wonder and fascination with our planet: how it was created, the eons before it was populated by ourselves, how organic life, including humans, developed and evolved, and some of the threats we face during the Late Holocene. The Origins of All Things is well suited for teaching purposes, as it offers a synoptic, well-supported overview of key issues in biology and geology, and an easy introduction to key publications that broaden the scope of each chapter. The book is relevant for students of biology, geography, geology and anyone interested in the origin of life on Earth and its evolution.

It is only in recent years that there has been development in the awareness of the father’s mental health. Yet, the father’s mental health can influence the mother, the infant, the family and society. This book seeks to address the reasons why the father or the potential father could suffer from a mental disorder or illness during the perinatal period, his reactions, and what can be done to help him. The book explores the way in which fathers’ mental health has presented in the past and how it presents now. It looks at the father’s attitudes towards his mental well-being and how he may self-manage and self-medicate. It examines the impact and influence the potential father and the father’s mental health has on his partner, infant and children. The reasons for certain disorders and illnesses are outlined, along with how they may manifest and are managed. Treatment options and types of medication are discussed and the ways in which the father can access the best possible help and support. Stories from fathers who have suffered from a particular mental illness or condition help others to understand both the practicalities and realities. The uniqueness of the shared stories from fathers highlights why recognition treatment and management are important to help other fathers improve their relationship with their partner and infant and to improve their own wellbeing. The book is intended to help health practitioners and anyone who is concerned about fathers’ mental health.

The celebrated lower Cambrian Chengjiang biota of Yunnan Province, China, represents one of the most significant ever paleontological discoveries. Deposits of ancient mudstone, about 520 million years old, have yielded a spectacular variety of exquisitely preserved fossils that record the early diversification of animal life. Since the discovery of the first specimens in 1984, many thousands of fossils have been collected, exceptionally preserving not just the shells and carapaces of the animals, but also their soft tissues in fine detail. This special preservation has produced fossils of rare beauty; they are also of outstanding scientific importance as sources of evidence about the origins of animal groups that have sustained global biodiversity to the present day. Much of the scientific documentation of the Chengjiang biota is in Chinese, and the first edition of this book was the first in English to provide fossil enthusiasts with a comprehensive overview of the fauna. The second edition has been fully updated and includes a new chapter on other exceptionally preserved fossils of Cambrian age, exciting new fossil finds from Chengjiang, and a phylogenetic framework for the biota. Displaying some 250 figures of marvelous specimens, this book presents to professional and amateur paleontologists, and all those fascinated by evolutionary biology, the aesthetic and scientific quality of the Chengjiang fossils.

Can victims of clergy sexual abuse find healing within the Catholic Church that failed them? Clergy abuse survivor Mark Joseph Williams shares his personal journey of spiraling after abuse and trauma into shame, substance abuse, and the isolation that followed. For Williams, confronting evil and his own anger while also realizing his own worthiness despite the agonizing results of trauma provided a starting point for healing. And he discovered something so central to his healing and faith in the place few would look to find it: the church. When he rediscovered the sacraments, he met his liberative healing path, despite and beyond the harms of clergy abuse, their secrets, and political plays of hierarchy--he discovered healing found deep within the Church. And from his unique perspective as a victim seeking redemption, he has counseled both victims of clergy abuse and faith leaders who care about transforming a broken church. And he provides concrete spiritual and institutional path forward of changes to be made in the Church, for justice, wholeness, and humility. By embracing the sacraments, he found a path to peace. Now Williams works to transform a broken church, through accompaniment between harmed and harming. For those abused and disillusioned, he offers hope that the Mystery of the Cross demands a resurrection--that the Church can be renewed by restorative love.

Mark Williamsi uurimistöö teadveloleku tervendavast mõjust on viinud teadvelolekupõhise kognitiivteraapia (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, MBCT) uuele tasemele. "Sügavama teadveloleku" kaante vahel jätkavad Mark Williams ja Danny Penman lugu, mille esimene osa pealkirjaga "Ärksus. Tee rahuni pöörases maailmas" kadus lettidelt nagu soe sai. Autorite eelmises teoses rajatud tugevale vundamendile toetub lugematute inimeste õnnetunne ja elurõõm ning nad aitasid paljudel leida eluteele uus suund. Samas jäi mitmete lugejate jaoks õhku küsimus, kas on veel juhtnööre alustatud teekonnal edasi liikumiseks ja viimsetele probleemidele vastu astumiseks."Sügavama teadvelolekuga" annavad Williams ja Penman selge ja kõlava vastuse: jah. Teadvelolekupraktikaga on võimalik minna veelgi kaugemale. Kui keskenduda nähtusele, millele autorid on andnud nimeks vedana ehk tunnete toon, paljastuvad ka kõige sügavamad protsessid mediteerivas mõistuses. Kõigest kaheksa nädalaga õpitud praktikate valguses haihtuvad ärevus, depressioon, stress ja üleüldine tusasus koos kõigi teiste ebameeldivate tundmustega. Neist jääb vabaks vaikne ja tüüne ruum elu uuesti taasülesehitamiseks.

Deeper Mindfulness: The New Way to Rediscover Calm in a Chaotic World
Use the hidden foundations of mindfulness to rediscover calm and reclaim your life in our chaotic world. There are moments in life that decide your fate. They ripple into the future and dictate how you experience the world in the moments that follow; either positive and uplifting, dark and chaotic, or flat and dull. What if you could recognize these moments before they seized control of your life? What if you could use them to set sail for a better future? What if all moments, big and small, could be harnessed this way? In Deeper Mindfulness, Oxford Professor Mark Williams and Dr Danny Penman reunite to present a new eight-week guided meditation program that takes mindfulness to the next level. Deeper Mindfulness reveals how the latest advances in neuroscience, combined with millennia old wisdom, can be used to transform your life. These discoveries open the doors to a deeper layer of mindfulness known as the 'feeling tone'. This sets the 'background color' that tinges your entire experience of life. It is also the tipping point from which you can reclaim your life in an increasingly stressful and chaotic world. Proven effective at treating anxiety, stress and depression, the practices in Deeper Mindfulness offer a new and more fruitful direction for both novice and experienced meditators. It also allows the rest of us to approach life with renewed strength, vigor and equanimity.
