This collection features four peer-reviewed reviews on restoring degraded forests. The first chapter reviews the restoration of tropical forests, focusing specifically on forest landscape restoration (FLR). It addresses the importance of implementing FLR and provides two detailed case studies to demonstrate this. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the challenges and opportunities in taking FLR forwards. The second chapter considers the importance of exploiting the genetics of tropical tree species for the restoration of tropical forests. The chapter identifies and reviews the available methods to measure genetic diversity and suitability for future plantation establishment, including field trials and molecular markers. The third chapter provides an overview of ecosystem services delivered by tropical agroforestry systems (AFS). The chapter reviews practical approaches for trade-off analysis between ecosystem services and plant biodiversity for better design (or redesign), as well as the sustainable management of AFS.The final chapter discusses how measuring, monitoring and managing the environmental impact of plantation operations are key components in sustainable palm oil production. The chapter examines the operational impacts of oil palm cultivation on biodiversity, as well as how oil palm production can be balanced to ensure forest conservation.

“Ambiguous work. Where can we start?”, wrote the art historian Oscar Schürer in the historic series Junge Kunst about Pablo Picasso’s multi - faceted oeuvre back in 1927. Picasso, who was investigating Surrealism at the time, was regarded as a genius even then – and had another 40 years of creativity before him. The magnificent legacy of a talent which showed twentieth - century art the way forward consists of an almost unimaginable number of paintings, drawings, graphic works, sculp tures and ceramic items. The art historian Markus Müller knows where and above all how we can begin to grasp a multilayered oeuvre like Picasso’s. In this newly edited artist monograph he skilfully guides the reader through the virtuoso plethora of styles of Pablo Picasso, explains key works from the various periods and provides a fascinating impression of the bubbling energy of this multi - talented artist. Not least as a result of the author’s personal acquaintance with the Picasso family, the archive sect ion of the work promises a number of finds which are seldom on view.

This book explores one of the most enchanting and recurrent motifs in Marc Chagall’s oeuvre: the circus. Throughout his prolific career, Chagall returned to the vivid imagery of acrobats, clowns, and fantastical performers, transforming the circus into a metaphor for the complexities, joys, and sorrows of the human experience. Presenting Chagall's celebrated lithographs on this subject alongside a selection of paintings, it offers both an introduction to Chagall’s work and life and an examination of his unique vision and symbology. By situating these works within the context of Chagall’s personal background, his experiences as an immigrant, and his lifelong embrace of theatricality, the book will illuminate how these factors shaped his circus imagery. It will further contextualise these images among those of Chagall's peers within European modernism. While central to Chagall’s art, the circus has never been the sole subject of a comprehensive study. The book also features a new translation of Chagall's essay 'The Circus', first published in French in 1967 but never published in English in its entirety. It is a widely held view that Picasso’s creative work received a fresh impetus with each new muse in his life. This volume does not discuss his biography or his stylistic phases, however, but pays tribute to the individual fates of the women who left their mark on the artist’s life. Personalities like Françoise Gilot and Dora Maar are among those whose entire life and creative work are acknowledged, not just the years they spent at Picasso’s side. The book sketches the life of ten women in the life of the Spanish artist. Picasso was close to his mother throughout her life and chose her maiden name as his artist’s name. When he wanted to marry the Russian ballerina Olga Khokhlova, she warned him that he would remain married to painting throughout his life. They separated in 1935; the reason was his young muse Marie-Thérèse Walter, who was also soon deposed by Dora Maar. Following various separations, women like the young artist Françoise Gilot also disappeared from Picasso’s canvases, but did not vanish entirely. This book pays tribute to them all. Presented women: Doña Maria Picasso y Lopez (Picasso’s mother), Maria Dolores Ruiz Picasso (Picasso’s sister), Gertrude Stein, Fernande Olivier, Eva Gouel (Marcelle Humbert), Olga Khokhlova, Marie-Thérèse Walter , Dora Maar, Françoise Gilot, Jaqueline Roque
