This book is an exploration of the internal world of James Joyce with particular emphasis on his being born into his parents’ grief at the loss of their firstborn son, offering a new perspective on his emotional difficulties.Mary Adams links Joyce’s profound sense of guilt and abandonment with the trauma of being a ‘replacement child’ and compares his experience with that of two psychoanalytic cases, as well as with Freud and other well-known figures who were replacement children. Issues such as survivor guilt, sibling rivalry, the ‘illegitimate’ replacement son, and the ‘dead mother’ syndrome are discussed. Joyce is seen as maturing from a paranoid, fearful state through his writing, his intelligence, his humour and his sublime poetic sensibility. By escaping the oppressive aspects of life in Dublin, in exile he could find greater emotional freedom and a new sense of belonging. A quality of claustrophobic intrusive identification in Ulysses contrasts strikingly with a new levity, imaginative identification, intimacy and compassion in Finnegans Wake. James Joyce and the Internal World of the Replacement Child highlights the concept of the replacement child and the impact this can have on a whole family. The book will be of interest to psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic psychotherapists and child psychotherapists as well as students of English literature, psychoanalytic studies and readers interested in James Joyce.Readers can find an additional piece by the author online at http://replacementchildforum.com/a-white-bird-trapped-inside-me-beating-scared-wings/

Pitch black velvety eerie sky that night, not a sound anywhere. I was rejected, betrayed, abused, and left for dead. Three days from nowhere, I thought my life was over, but the Lord rescued me. I ran twenty-five hundred miles away from one nightmare and wound up in another far worse. The man followed me for years. Despite my attempts to rid myself of this fearful specter, he was always there. Deep in my fear, God saved me once again. Up on that high, rigid Verdes Cliff with the raging water beneath me, death was all around. On the verge of insanity, the Lord stepped in and rescued me. He gave me back my life. This is my story of how, despite fearful circumstances, God is always there. No matter where you are, no matter what midnight hour you face, remember you are more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus.

A practical guide to leveraging hidden knowledge intangibles to fuel growth and innovation and add value to your business.Intangible Capital: Putting Knowledge to Work in the 21st-Century Organization is for every manager struggling to succeed and innovate in today’s knowledge-based economy. This must-have handbook helps businesspeople build smarter, more successful companies by maximizing the knowledge that is already inside their organizations. Most businesspeople have heard of the growing importance of knowledge workers, information technology, innovation, networks, reputation, and performance management. Like no other guidebook, Intangible Capital shows how each of these trends fit into an overall discipline of intangibles management. The book takes the ten basic building blocks of traditional, industrial-era businesses and defines their knowledge-era equivalents—intangibles as the new raw material, intellectual capital (IC) as the new production line, IC assessment as the new balance sheet, and networks as the new organizational chart. This approach provides a clear road map for managers adapting to the realities of business today, one that helps translate the new world of the knowledge-based economy into understandable terms and ready-to-implement ideas.Includes an exercise at the end of each chapter that enables readers to connect the chapter to their own businessesPresents a resource section in each chapter for additional print and online sourcesAn accompanying website with sections for all key corporate titles (CEO, CFO, CIO, COO, etc.) shows how the book relates to their work and serves as a forum for ideas among readersA full index covering both industrial- and knowledge-era tools to make it easier for readers to make a connection with their current work approaches
