Writing Queer History introduces and surveys the ways in which historians and others have researched and written about the lesbian, gay and queer past. It pinpoints some of the key themes, issues and questions they have sought to address, looks at the kinds of sources they have used and suggests ways in which queer theory since the early 1990s has shifted approaches and perspectives for historians. Section One gives an overview of uses and accounts of the queer past from the late 19th century to the present. Section Two explores key questions and themes that have exercised historians by focusing on key texts ranging from the Medieval to the contemporary. Section Three focuses in further on different kinds of source material, examining specific archives to demonstrate how we might understand the past through particular documents, artifacts, voices and images. Finally, the author describes how his work has been shaped by his own biography, changing academic fashion, new theoretical perspectives and the particularities of archive collections. The book shows how histories of queer life have implications for the broader understanding of culture, society and politics, as well as demonstrating how queer history writing has been influenced and shaped by activist and community groups and by scholars working in and across different disciplines. Rich in case studies and including practical guidance on approaching queer history, Writing Queer History is an invaluable text for those studying the history of sexuality, gender history, the history of the emotions and historiography.

Diaspora Missions among Asian Americans in Rural Counties in Tennessee
Diaspora Missiology has captured many researchers including mission strategists, local church practitioners and students of missiology. As a result, there is a growing body of literature for this field of study. For decades this literature has been in the domain of social sciences, history, and law. However there have been few researchers and few books published on rural and semi-rural migration in relation to missions and church growth. Today there are flourishing churches being planted among diaspora communities in those rural or semi-rural regions. Matt Cook's work has contributed to the Global Church in understanding "people on the move" who settled outside the mega cities.Diaspora Missiology has captured many researchers including mission strategists, local church practitioners and students of missiology. Where exactly is queer England? There has been much discussion of London as a queer city, but what about the many thousands of queer lives lived elsewhere? From Manchester's bars and nightclubs, to Brighton's seafront, the attractions of Leeds to the dockside delights of Plymouth, in Queer Beyond London two leading LGBTQ historians will take you on a journey through four cities with rich and diverse queer histories. They show how geography, size, economy, city government and local history and culture shaped LGBTQ life in these places, each city forging a vibrant queer culture of its own. Using the pioneering community histories that have been produced in each of these cities, and including the voices of queer people who have made their lives there, the book tells local stories to change our national history. -- .

This “fun, brain-twisting book . . . will make you think” as it explores 75+ paradoxes in math, philosophy, physics, and social science (Sean Carroll, New York Times–bestselling author of Something Deeply Hidden).Paradox is a sophisticated kind of magic trick. A magician’s purpose is to create the appearance of impossibility, to pull a rabbit from an empty hat. Yet paradox doesn’t require tangibles, like rabbits or hats. Paradox works in the abstract, with words and concepts and symbols, to create the illusion of contradiction. There are no contradictions in reality, but there can appear to be. In Sleight of Mind, Matt Cook and a few collaborators dive deeply into more than 75 paradoxes in mathematics, physics, philosophy, and the social sciences. As each paradox is discussed and resolved, Cook helps readers discover the meaning of knowledge and the proper formation of concepts—and how reason can dispel the illusion of contradiction. The journey begins with “a most ingenious paradox” from Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance. Readers will then travel from Ancient Greece to cutting-edge laboratories, encounter infinity and its different sizes, and discover mathematical impossibilities inherent in elections. They will tackle conundrums in probability, induction, geometry, and game theory; perform “supertasks”; build apparent perpetual motion machines; meet twins living in different millennia; explore the strange quantum world—and much more.

"The thing about Matt's writing, 'poetry' if you will, is that it's funny. Not 'funny for poetry' but straight up funny. And thoughtful. And human. You won't have to dig deep into layers of metaphorical self-indulgent word play to enjoy it either. It's all right there for you. I enjoy Matt's work on the same level that I do Daniel Clowes or Jack Handey. In fact he's kind of the poetry version of their baby. If Daniel and Jack had a baby. I'm not sure that Daniel Clowes and Jack Handey have even met. But also they aren't capable of having a baby so never mind. But you get my point." --David Cross, actor

London and the Culture of Homosexuality explores the relationship between London and male homosexuality from the criminalization of all 'acts of gross indecency' between men in 1885 to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 - years marked by an intensification in concern about male-male relationships and also by the emergence of an embryonic homosexual rights movement. Taking his cue from literary and lesbian and gay scholars, urban historians and cultural geographers, Matt Cook combines discussion of London's homosexual subculture and various major and minor scandals with a detailed examination of representations in the press, in science and in literature. The conjunction of approaches used in this study provides insights into the development of ideas about the modern homosexual and into the many different ways of comprehending and taking part in London's culture of homosexuality.

The book explores the changing ways in which male-male sex and love have been perceived and experienced from the late Anglo-Saxon period to the present. Celebrated figures, such as Richard Lionheart, whose love for Philip Augustus of France was so well-documented, Oscar Wilde, gubject of the most explosive scandal of the Victorian period, and Derek Jarman, the great artist and chronicler of the age of AIDS, are examined alongside little-known figures: Eleanor/John Rykener, a cross-dresser in Chaucer's England, the mollies of eighteenth-century London, the habituants of underground gay bars and cafes in 1930s Manchester and Brighton, and the newly-confident gays of contemporary Britain, who marry, adopt children and command the increasingly powerful 'pink pound'. Drawing on a fabulous wealth of research, the authors - each an expert in his field - have worked closely together to deliver a powerful, highly-readable and eye-opening history of love and desire between men in Britain.
