A Biography of a Mountain: The Making and Meaning of Mount Rushmore
A comprehensive narrative history of Mt. Rushmore, written in light of recent political controversies, and a timely retrospective for the monument's 100th anniversary in 2025 "Well, most people want to come to a national park and leave with that warm, fuzzy feeling with an ice cream cone. Rushmore can't do that if you do it the right way. If you do it the right way people are going to be leaving pissed." Gerard Baker, the first Native American superintendent of Mt. Rushmore, shared those words with author Matthew Davis. From the tragic history of Wounded Knee and the horrors of Indian Boarding Schools, to the Land Back movement of today, Davis traces the Native American story of Mt. Rushmore alongside the narrative of the growing territory and state of South Dakota, and the economic and political forces that shaped the reasons for the Memorial's creation. A Biography of A Mountain combines history with reportage, bringing the complicated and nuanced story of Mt. Rushmore to life, from the land's origins as sacred tribal ground; to the expansion of the American West; to the larger-than-life personality of Gutzon Borglum, the artist who carved the presidential faces into the mountain; and up to the politicized present-day conflict over the site and its future. Exploring issues related to how we memorialize American history, Davis tells an imperative story for our time.

This book emphasises the importance of difficulties identifying victims of human trafficking. It is often challenging for trafficked victims to be identified, for victims to self-identify, and for victims to be distinguishable from other groups of vulnerable people such as economic migrants, asylum seekers, refugees and smuggled persons. This book examines the environments where difficulties of identifying foreign victims exist or identification is overlooked entirely. It argues that a victim-centred approach is required to recognize them for who they are, a trafficked victim. This lies in opposition to the justice system which often takes the oath of prosecuting victims rather than identifying them as victims, criminalising them for offences as part of their exploitation, forced upon them under duress from their exploiters. Drawing on a range of subjects, this book contributes to existing academic work and speaks to anti-trafficking organisations, charities, public authorities and staff within the UK's National Referral Mechanism to play a pivotal role in spotting, referring and identifying more foreign trafficked victims, despite the current negativity surrounding immigration.

This short Pivot explores the the physical, emotional, and psychological impact of the lived experiences of asylum seekers on the staff and volunteers of third sector organisations who assist and support them. This research casts a direct light on the issues, challenges, and barriers of their work during and after the pandemic. It seeks to pinpoint the needs of staff which should be addressed by employers of third sector organisations to improve efficiency and wellbeing from an operational viewpoint, a mental health lens and psychological perspective. It adopts a Constructivist Grounded Theory (CGT) — a qualitative research method that involves co-constructing theories with participants. The research effectively examines how frontline organisations need to change given the social, economic and political challenges faced by asylum seekers and refugees in accessing support alongside the impact of new Government immigration, asylum policies and new legislation at that time. It also provides insights into the lived experiences of asylum seekers and refugees.

A Romantic Tragicomedy of Faith, Family, and Folly Ross, twenty-three, isn't nearly as clever as he thinks he is. His brilliant idea to break up with his girlfriend, Lora Liamant, in an attempt to show her how terrible other men are and how empty life would be without him, has backfired spectacularly. Within weeks, he discovers she's moved on with the brother of a famous network TV actor. In the midst of his heartbreak, Ross's parents die tragically-in a helicopter crash at an all-inclusive resort in Turks and Caicos-leaving him with millions of dollars and custody over his teenage sister. Traumatized, ruminating, and rich, Ross plots scheme after scheme to show Lora he's changed into a responsible adult, even as she shows no indication of wanting that. Everything he does seems to make matters worse, as his misguided mission of self-transformation only leads to Lora's confusion and dismay.Let Me Try Again is an electric picaresque charting a young Jewish man's spiral of neurotic pride and self-improvement within a culture that only caters to his worst impulses. Brimming with vitality and crackling with wit, Matthew Davis's dynamic debut illuminates the absurdities of twenty-first-century life with ecstatic flair.

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a transformative and powerful approach to language education and has had a significant impact on educational pedagogy in recent years. Despite burgeoning literature on the efficacy and implementation of CLIL, there remains a gap between CLIL and English Language Teaching (ELT). Many practitioners wonder how they can ‘do CLIL’ if their main classes are focused on English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This volume addresses these concerns by examining the experiences of various CLIL practitioners in the EFL context of Japan. Chapters outline the CLIL methodology, the differences in ‘hard CLIL’ (subject led) and ‘soft CLIL’ (language-oriented) before focusing on the EFL interpretations of soft-CLIL. Although the distinction of hard CLIL and soft CLIL has been mentioned in several publications, this is the first book-length exploration of this issue, featuring chapters examining expectations, challenges, material support, implementation, and even motivation in CLIL classrooms. All of this culminates in a review of the potential and future of CLIL in EFL contexts, paving the way for more widespread and well informed implementation of CLIL all over the world.

The sixth edition of Meaningful Statistics introduces students to foundational concepts and demonstrates how statistics are an integral aspect of their everyday lives—from baseball batting averages to reports on the median cost of buying a home to the projected outcomes of an upcoming election. Each chapter begins with a question and scenario that is then explored through statistical concepts, demonstrating to students how research and statistics can help us to answer questions and solve problems. The opening chapter focuses on the process of collecting data and uses this information to explore whether multivitamins are a waste of money. Additional chapters explore linear regression and whether junk food is harmful to a child's IQ; normal distribution and the issue of a tie for Olympic downhill gold; confidence intervals and a simulation of the NBA draft lottery; and more.Students learn about descriptive measures for populations and samples; probability and random variables; and sampling distributions, with each concept corresponding to real-world examples. Closing chapters cover the testing of hypotheses, tests using the chi-square distribution; and inferences with two or more populations. For the sixth edition, exercises and examples have been updated throughout.Designed to bring key concepts to life, Meaningful Statistics is an ideal resource for courses in mathematics and statistics.

At 23, Matt Davis moved to a remote Mongolian town to teach English. What he found when he arrived was a town and a country undergoing wholesale change from a traditional, countryside existence to a more urban, modern identity. "When Things Get Dark" documents these changes through the Mongolians Matt meets, but also focuses on the author's downward spiral into alcohol abuse and violence--a scenario he saw played out by many of the Mongolian men around him. Matt's self-destruction culminates in a drunken fight with three men that forces him to a hospital to have his kidneys X-rayed. He hits bottom in that cold hospital room, his body naked and shivering, a bloodied Mongolian man staring at him from an open door, the irrational thought in his head that maybe he is going to die there. His personal struggles are balanced with insightful descriptions of customs and interactions, and interlaced with essays on Mongolian history and culture that make for a fascinating glimpse of a mysterious place and people."

In 1965, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder and Philip Whalen gathered at the base of Mt. Tamalpais, a lovely small mountain in Marin County that anchors the San Francisco Bay on its northwest side. Inspired by Tibetan and Indian practices of walking clockwise  the way of the sun"  around a venerated object, they  opened the mountain" by completing the first circumambulation. They did it again two years later, a month after the  Human Be-in" in Golden Gate Park, and with greater company as they invited the public to join them. The practice has continued almost uninterrupted for forty years, with Matthew Davis finding an organizing role on April 8, 1971, the Buddha's birthday, when he first led the walk. He has led the celebrations more than 140 times since. The ritual walk  slightly less than 15 miles in length  marks the four quarters of the year. Ten way stations have been established for ceremonial chanting and prayer. With 80 remarkable photographs by Michael Farrell Scott, lovely drawings and maps, chants and poems, this book documents not only this particular spiritual practice but offers guidance for others wishing to establish similar practices in their own areas.
