The Third Renunciation

The Third Renunciation

Heeding St. John Cassian's call, The Third Renunciation rejects classic depictions of divinity and religious dogma to see God more fully. Each poem begins with a proposition (e.g. "Say God is the music we strain to hear"), or an explanation for a Biblical story (e.g. "maybe Jesus was having an off day"). Henry's poetry offers answers to the myriad whys at the center of faith and doubt, gives voice to the notion that both singing and screaming are authentic responses to suffering, and argues that "grace is a Twinkie or a cockroach-/something that never goes bad, can survive/anything the cold world throws.../ despite all our best efforts to quell it."

"The Bible is a letter God has sent to us; prayer is a letter we send to him." Matthew HenryMatthew Henry, known for his exegetical commentaries of the Bible, was a minister in England at the turn of the 18th century. Being a nonconformist, he was prevented from holding public office, from participating in many social functions, could not graduate from any English or Welsh Universities, and was burdened with numerous other limitations. The Act of Uniformity, the Five Mile Act, and the Test Acts levied harsh punishments against him and his family, along with all other nonconformists and Catholics within the realm.Yet Henry believed in a practical faith, one that should be used to improve any person's daily living. As such, prayers should be done correctly, frequently, and fervently. His book, A Method for Prayer, gives instructions not just for how to pray, but also when one should pray. Besides the Lord's Prayer, another dozen practical and timely specific prayers are discussed. Now almost two centuries after it was published, A Method for Prayer, gives a glimpse of religious life after the Restoration. Not only does it allow the reader an opportunity to reflect on the long struggle to reach religious freedom, it also remains a practical tool for faith.

Abandoned San Francisco Bay Area

America Through Time

nidottu
Explores forgotten structures, uncovering the beauty of urban decay and their hidden histories. The San Francisco Bay Area is a beautiful region of California with diverse scenery, population, and history. Over the years, many businesses and institutions have come and gone. Sometimes these fallen enterprises leave behind an empty husk of their former selves. Lurking inside these abandonments, the Bay Area is home to another kind of under-appreciated beauty: urban decay. In 2013, the authors explored a couple abandoned places on a whim: a wastewater treatment plant and a ghost town. Experiencing the beauty of decay, they became hooked and spent the next several years seeking out every forgotten structure. Over the course of their adventures, thousands of photos were collected in an attempt to capture the spirit of places people no longer dare visit. Along the way, the history, local legends, and hearsay about the derelict buildings were accumulated. Within this book, authors Matt and Greg have curated a selection of the most interesting urban decay to share with you. Enjoy a private tour of the Bay Area's most beautiful abandonments on offer. Learn the history and enjoy photos of the parts often unseen.
A Method for Prayer: With Scripture Expressions Concerning Confession, Sin, and Praying to Petition God
Matthew Henry's guidance describes how Christians can rightly conduct prayers for private concerns and public occasions - for centuries this has been a valuable source for believers.Writing in the 1710s, the author reflected on his lifetime as a man of God who had conducted many official ceremonies and events in his church. The concerns of his congregation, many of whom experienced the heights of joy and depths of despair that life offers, led Matthew Henry to devise a methodology for praying to the Lord rich in example. This method is intended to both respect and properly consult the divine, and also give comfort to believers who are in a state of distress or anxiety. Requests to God to fulfil a desire, to forgive a sin, as well as communications of life. Simple prayers of praise, wherein the Lord is given thanks for good fortune or daily small blessings, are also detailed.

Matthew Henry's classic, describing how Christians can rightly conduct prayers for public occasions, has for centuries been a valuable source for believers. Writing in the 1710s, the author reflected on his lifetime as a man of God who had conducted many official ceremonies and events in his church. Most of Henry's recommendations reference Biblical scripture as a source: with the Holy Bible as his backing, the advices and methods of the author are beyond question. The language he uses is reminiscent of the King James Version of the text, which was the dominant Bible in the 17th and 18th centuries. Despite the passage of centuries, the authority and authenticity of Henry's prayer method is undiminished.
