Multiple Regression and Beyond provides a conceptually oriented introduction to multiple regression (MR) analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM), along with related analyses. By emphasising the concepts and purposes of MR rather than the derivation and calculation of formulas, this book presents the material in a clearer and more accessible way. This approach not only covers essential coursework but also makes it more approachable for students, increasing the likelihood that they will conduct research using MR or SEM effectively and wisely. This book covers both MR and SEM, explaining their relevance to each other. It also includes path analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and latent growth modeling, incorporating real-world research examples throughout the chapters and end-of-chapter exercises. Figures and tables are used extensively to illustrate key concepts and techniques. This new edition includes:New sections on quantile regression, statistical suppression, and random intercept panel modelsSupport for the statistical program R and the R package lavaan in the text and on the website (www.tzkeith.com)New examples and exercisesUpdated instructor and student online resources (www.tzkeith.com)

The first scholarly monograph devoted exclusively to this vital work of contemporary public art, this book examines Maya Lin’s Confluence Project through the lens of environmental humanities and Indigenous studies. Matthew Reynolds provides a detailed analysis of each earthwork, along with a discussion of the proposed final project at Celilo Falls near The Dalles, Oregon. The book assesses the artist’s longtime engagement with the region of the Pacific Northwest and explores the Confluence Project within Lin’s larger oeuvre. Several consistent themes and experiences are common amongst all the sites. These include an emphasis on individual, multisensory encounters with the earthworks and their surrounding contexts; sound as an experiential dimension of landscape; indexical accounts of the multicultural, multispecies histories of each place; and an evocation of loss. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, contemporary art, environmental studies, environmental humanities, and Native American studies.

Many of us have had experiences of using IT systems at work that just don’t work right or cause more problems than they solve. Even if we’ve been lucky at work and always had the opportunity to use well-built and functional IT systems, it’s common to hear in the press or in our day-to-day lives about IT systems that are "down" or "slow", or just do not work right. While it can be inconvenient to have to use IT systems that aren’t the best for businesses, buying an IT system that isn’t fit for its intended purpose can have devastating effects on the business itself and the careers of the people involved. The senior team of any business will know everything there is to know about their specific business or market, but their job is not to implement IT systems. This brings an inherent unfairness to IT systems procurement because it makes it very easy to buy the wrong thing at the wrong price. In essence, the buyers are amateurs but the sellers are professionals. This mismatch is at the root of the majority IT systems failures – a problem which might cost a company millions of dollars and negatively impact work. This book is intended to be a practical manual for senior leaders in small-to-medium businesses that will teach them how to buy IT systems effectively – i.e. to somewhat transform the non-IT senior leadership personnel such that they are more informed and capable buyers. There are a million-and-one potholes that can trip up a business, even when buying from an otherwise effective and reputable seller, and this book looks to make it far more likely that the reader will buy the right system, at the right price. The author uses his extensive experience to highlight problem areas and offer solutions to eliminate them.

Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Bront and first published in 1847, has been translated more than five hundred times into over sixty languages. Prismatic Jane Eyre argues that we should see these many re-writings, not as simple replications of the novel, but as a release of its multiple interpretative possibilities: in other words, as a prism.Prismatic Jane Eyre develops the theoretical ramifications of this idea, and reads Bront 's novel in the light of them: together, the English text and the many translations form one vast entity, a multilingual world-work, spanning many times and places, from Cuba in 1850 to 21st-century China; from Calcutta to Bologna, Argentina to Iran. Co-written by many scholars, Prismatic Jane Eyre traces the receptions of the novel across cultures, showing why, when and where it has been translated (and no less significantly, not translated - as in Swahili), and exploring its global publishing history with digital maps and carousels of cover images. Above all, the co-authors read the translations and the English text closely, and together, showing in detail how the novel's feminist power, its political complexities and its romantic appeal play out differently in different contexts and in the varied styles and idioms of individual translators. Tracking key words such as 'passion' and 'plain' across many languages via interactive visualisations and comparative analysis, Prismatic Jane Eyre opens a wholly new perspective on Bront 's novel, and provides a model for the collaborative close-reading of world literature.Prismatic Jane Eyre is a major intervention in translation and reception studies and world and comparative literature. It will also interest scholars of English literature, and readers of the Bront s.

Who am I? Where do I fit in? Almost everyone has asked those questions. In his book, BIGGEST, FULLEST, BRIGHTEST: Shifting the Consciousness of Humanity, Matthew Reynolds tells his story of struggling to find a place of belonging in a world that continually tells him he isn't good enough. He experienced strife from the day he was born to a white mother and Black father in the time before interracial marriage was legal or accepted. As a child, he became aware that he was attracted to the same gender and recognized that being Black and gay made him doubly different and perceived as very much "less than." Driven by an overwhelming desire to blend in, he created a persona that allowed him to function in the world . . . but, at what cost? In order to find himself and reclaim his true identity, the author has spent his entire life doing the grueling Work necessary to achieve that goal. Extensive research, professional assistance, and his lived experiences have unveiled subconscious coping mechanisms that allowed him to survive, but not to LIVE. What's more, he discovered that he was not alone in living a lie, and the devices he used to get by were, in fact, universal. This book invites you to explore the reasons why you think the way that you do. It will take you on a journey through your past to your present and helps craft your future. A future that is based in equity, love and respect. When you finish this book the hope is that everyone will be valued for who they are, and not for what they have, or what they look like. Recognizing that the first step in achieving that is for each of us to allow ourselves the same grace. This book is more than a memoir-- it is a guided journey into your past that has shaped your present. Along the way, you will be given tools to create a better future for yourself and the world around you. Your bigger, fuller, brighter future.

This innovative collection of essays shows how linguistic diversity has inspired people across time and cultures to embark on adventurous journeys through the translation of texts. It tells the story of how ideas have travelled via the medium of translation into different languages and cultures, focusing on illustrated examples ranging from Greek papyri through illuminated manuscripts and fine early books to fantasy languages (such as J.R.R. Tolkien’s Elvish), the search for a universal language and the challenges of translation in multicultural Britain. Starting with the concept of Babel itself, which illustrates the early cultural prominence of multilingualism, and with an illustration of a Mediterranean language of four millennia ago (Linear A) which still resists deciphering, it goes on to examine how languages have interacted with each other in different contexts. The book also explores the multilingual transmission of key texts in religion, science (the history of Euclid), animal fable (from Aesop in Greek to Beatrix Potter via La Fontaine, with some fascinating Southeast Asian books), fairy-tale, fantasy and translations of the great Greek epics of Homer. It is lavishly illustrated with a diverse range of material, from papyrus fragments found at Oxyrhynchus to Esperanto handbooks to Asterix cartoons, each offering its own particular adventure into translation.

Translation is everywhere, and matters to everybody. Translation doesn't only give us foreign news, dubbed films and instructions for using the microwave: without it, there would be no world religions, and our literatures, our cultures, and our languages would be unrecognisable. In this Very Short Introduction, Matthew Reynolds gives an authoritative and thought-provoking account of the field, from ancient Akkadian to World English, from St Jerome to Google Translate. He shows how translation determines meaning, how it matters in commerce, empire, conflict and resistance, and why it is fundamental to literature and the arts. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
The Epistle of Forgiveness

The Epistle of Forgiveness

Abu l-?Ala? al-Ma?arri; Matthew Reynolds

Known as "one of the most complex and unusual texts in Arabic literature" (Banipal Magazine), The Epistle of Forgiveness is the lengthy reply by the prolific Syrian poet and prose writer, Abu l-'Ala' al-Ma'arri (d. 449/1057), to a letter by an obscure grammarian, Ibn al-Qari. With biting irony, The Epistle of Forgiveness mocks Ibn al-Qari's hypocrisy and sycophancy by imagining he has died and arrived with some difficulty in Heaven, where he meets famous poets and philologists from the past. In al-Ma'arri's imaginative telling, Ibn al-Qari also glimpses Hell and converses with the Devil and various heretics. Al-Ma'arri—a maverick, a vegan, and often branded a heretic himself—seems to mock popular ideas about the Hereafter. Among other things, he introduces us to hypocrites, poets, princes, rebels, mystics, and apostates, with asides on piety, superstition, wine-drinking, old age, and other topics. This remarkable book is the first complete translation of this masterpiece into any language, all the more impressive because of Al-Ma'arri's highly ornate and difficult style, his use of rhymed prose, and his numerous obscure words and expressions. Replete with erudite commentary, amusing anecdotes, and sardonic wit, The Epistle of Forgiveness is an imaginative tour-de-force by one of the most pre-eminent figures in classical Arabic literature. An English-only edition.
The Poetry of Translation

The Poetry of Translation

Poetry is supposed to be untranslatable. But many poems in English are also translations: Pope's Iliad, Pound's Cathay, and Dryden's Aeneis are only the most obvious examples. The Poetry of Translation explodes this paradox, launching a new theoretical approach to translation, and developing it through readings of English poem-translations, both major and neglected, from Chaucer and Petrarch to Homer and Logue. The word 'translation' includes within itself a picture: of something being carried across. This image gives a misleading idea of goes on in any translation; and poets have been quick to dislodge it with other metaphors. Poetry translation can be a process of opening; of pursuing desire, or succumbing to passion; of taking a view, or zooming in; of dying, metamorphosing, or bringing to life. These are the dominant metaphors that have jostled the idea of 'carrying across' in the history of poetry translation into English; and they form the spine of Reynolds's discussion. Where do these metaphors originate? Wide-ranging literary historical trends play their part; but a more important factor is what goes on in the poem that is being translated. Dryden thinks of himself as 'opening' Virgil's Aeneid because he thinks Virgil's Aeneid opens fate into world history; Pound tries to being Propertius to life because death and rebirth are central to Propertius's poems. In this way, translation can continue the creativity of its originals. The Poetry of Translation puts the translation of poetry back at the heart of English literature, allowing the many great poem-translations to be read anew.

There are more than seven billion people on the planet. They have, on average, over 100 billion nerve cells in their brains and 5 litres of blood pumping through their bodies. Their skeletons are made up of 206 bones and their hearts beat approximately 72 times per minute. They are connected to each other in more ways than they can possibly imagine. Philip is one of them. Sue is another. This is their story. It is the story of one year and two lives and what it means to live in them. It is a story about love and courage, risk and betrayal. It is a story that will make you look at the world with new eyes.
