Julian Schnabel is one of the most important and innovative artists working today. Since his breakthrough in the late 1970s, he has created works that have been exhibited at and collected by major museums throughout the world. Through evocative Polaroid, black-and-white, and color photography, Julian Schnabel: Symbols of Actual Life chronicles the artist’s 2018 installation at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, his first major presentation on the West Coast in more than thirty years. The volume is supplemented by an enlightening introduction to the work by Max Hollein, an interview with Schnabel, and a gallery of related site-specific works.

Orange, yellow, green, blue – what happens in the human brain when colours are not seen with the physical eye, but instead aurally experienced with one’s ears? This pub lication focuses on a sound installation by the Swiss artist Daniele Buetti commissioned by the Schirn Museum in Frankfurt, which transfers colour theory, meditation and hypnosis into an artistic context. The Swiss conceptual artist Daniele Buetti, born in 1955, is a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Münster in Germany. His artistic work spans many media. In the 1990s he rose to fame with his modified photographs of supermodels. His sound installation It’s all in the mind is based on a 25-minute audio performance taking the audience through techniques of hypnosis. In his work, Buetti uses 'colour purification’ techniques of hypnotic suggestion that conjure up different colours and their psychological effects. Interviews with well-known specialists complement this interdisciplinary volume.

The work of Roni Horn, born in 1955, was on view in 2009 in a major retrospective at museums including Tate Modern London and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. She explores the subject of changing identities using a wide variety of media, including photography, sculpture, installation, drawing and text. The artist plays with similarities and differences in photographic portraits in particular, sounding out the ambiguity of various human facial expressions. The face becomes a projection screen for an internal dialogue for the viewer.

In 2011, the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt invited the young international group of artists et al* to create an installation as an introduction to the exhibition "Surreale Dinge (Surreal Things)". The resulting work, which fills an entire room, offers a contemporary perspective on Surrealism.

Berlin-based sculptor and installation artist Michael Sailsdorfer, whose work was shown in 2008 at New York's P.S.1, here presents new work: a popcorn machine, a film with its projector, a neon sign, a set of little bus shelters outfitted with amenities for living, a motorized revolving tire installed off the wall.
