Mayar Akash

This is in a series of photo books, cataloguing Mayar's Photograbbing time and date from locations all over United Kingdom. Photojounals, covering from the late 80s and onwards, thousand of photos taken with the 35mm to start off with and then onto digitals.

M.G & Me is the author's memoires of his life with Wegener's Granulomatosis. The author recounts his days with this disease and carrying the affliction that he is going to die within 4 to 5 years. What was he going to do with this infliction that pranced on him out of the blue. In 2009 there wasn't much information about this disease and all that were out there were very raw. Mayar lost all hopes and left behind everyhting to be ready for death from this painful vasculitis, autoimmune disease. It is this journey that turned around his fate, this emotional and mental roller coaster ride, has thrown many twists and turns that inadvertantly became a spiritual one. In those moments of decisions and choices that Mayar found his salvation, saviour the healing power which Mayar present in this book so that readers and people with the same affliction can find some hope, like he did.

The content of this book has no theme other than the experiences of life in many and various stages. The journeys are many and varied with so many challenges and obstacles as a Sylheti, Bangladeshi; but the vast array of experiences are not unique to me and are universal. The experiences that I've captured are colourful and the times that they've happened give it the flavour. I want to bring to the world, my world and show that there is dissimilarity to our lives. We all ride "the ride of life" from different points but all travel to the heart/centre of what life is. In this book you will feel and experience a journey that will take you in and out, emotional, mentally and spiritually. The writing will challenge you as you read the authors snapshots of life, the randomness of the content to illustrate the randomness of life and what it throws at you or rather what you wasn't prepared for. I now that you will go on a roller coaster ride of life, don't get disheartened.

More than what you wanted to know about this placid community who in just 46 years have cemented their place in the world. A community that has their roots from the 13th century and has been formidable for the Mughals and to the East India Company. A region dense with forest and tucked away in Assam of hindustan (Now Bangladesh, India), with their own culture and religion, the region of water, floods in particular, fish eaters. From there they found their way to the shores of the world ports and established the foundation with a high personal costs. Today the Sylheti are in the driving seats of their life in United Kingdom. Here you will find how they did it.

This book focuses on what happened in 1993 at Quddus Ali's Vigil, the photographs capture information about the event from local youth's perspective; historically in the past much of the local individual's accounts and perspectives got lost in the passage of time, their accounts are not presented in literatures as of ""First hands"", but become articles of others, such as reports, newspaper columns and quotes.

Young Voice takes the reader back more than twenty five years, to a time when the activities of the far right political parties were active in the Bethnal Green area of London. It looks at the challenges which faced the young Bangladeshi living in the area at that time and how they coped with the intimidation and outright racism which manifested itself on the very streets where they lived. From the late 70s, all through the 90s and to the present day, Young Voice is a record of young people's involvement in the demonstrations which defined the time and contributed to the defeat of hatred and the lack of inclusion and acceptance that was prevalent. Told in stories of the times and from the photographs taken by the author, Young Voice is a moving account of how the youth challenged the status quo of its own community and took the fight to the haters and ultimately removed them from the streets.

They were many, such as Tassaduk Ahmed, Altaf Ali, Ayub Ali Master and others who started the cogs turning and brought about changes for the community; one such change was capacity building for the youth of their time. Then the community needed to take the reign of living in UK by getting into the decision making systems. So in 1982, sadly after the 1978 murder of Altab Ali, the community leaders put forward seven Independent councillors to contest the seats in key wards in Tower Hamlets. The effort did not go to waste, we had the first two Bangladeshi councillors out of eleven contesting in four wards, St Katharine's, St Mary's, Spitalfields and Weavers. Out of which the Labour party candidate won in St Katharine's Ward and one Independent seat in Spitalfields. The community finally got in but it took many years before shifting the balance and directly addressing the deprivation and lack of investment in the borough and this book recognises and celebrates the councillors.

"From the heights of joy to a much darker sorrow", Father to Child is a collection of inspirational poems and musing that follow the author's life from his own childhood up to when he has children of his own and wishes to pass some of wisdom to them. It deals with a vast number of emotional topics, from the heights of joy to a much darker sorrow. Akash expertly weaves a number of complicated themes throughout his poetry and expresses his feelings in a beautifully blunt form of honesty. This collection gives a clear idea of what it was like growing up in the author's shoes, how his cultural heritage and values shaped him as he grew up, and eventually how he came to terms with his identity. It also gives a deep insight into the struggles he has faced, in a touching, sometimes even heart wrenching manner. Like all great poetry, these touches your heart in a way you can't quite put words to; I enjoyed the soulful journey alongside the author, Mayar Akash.
