David Wiseman is one of the leading American designers of his generation. Produced in collaboration with the artist, this monograph offers an in-depth look at his work, through Wiseman's extensive archives, documents, and illustrations. The book features photographs of his unique sculptural objects and environmental installations, plus views of his studio and process--where the unfinished sculptures and sketches reveal a true portrait of the artist at work. The book also shows readers many of his immersive creations that are in private homes and are rarely photographed. Wiseman's goal is creating work that brings nature indoors, ranging from small objects and sculptures to expansive installations. His signature Radial Branch chandelier, made of bronze and sculptured porcelain, is cast from fallen tree limbs he acquired on hiking trails in Los Angeles. His signature patterns and motifs reveal his deeply rooted love of the natural world--which is evident in designs ranging from faceted blow-Bohemian-glass crystal tumblers and porcelain vases to rugs, dining room tables, stools, and benches.

Founded in 1996 by Brian Messana and Toby O Rorke in New York City, Messana O Rorke describe their particular brand of minimalist-infected modernism as pragmatism, with their approach to design capturing as much usable square footage as possible, rigorously limiting the number of interior elements, and extracting maximum impact from the chosen interventions. This distinctive approach extends to their entire material vocabulary: white walls stripped of mouldings, with recessed lighting at their perimeter; honey-toned oak floors; highly polished stainless steel railings and hardware; and marble fixtures and countertops and dark limestone flooring in the bathrooms and kitchen. With their masterful manipulation of space and judicious selection of materials oak flooring wire-brushed and lightly limed to contrast white walls but also to bring out its vivid grain, simultaneously conveying the woodworker s craft and the rawness of nature; statuary marble in a kitchen chosen for the painterly quality of the veining; architectural photography and ceramic objects adding sophisticated drama Messana O Rorke create complete environments of simplicity and serenity.

Cotton presents rooms that mix historical and modern influences, resulting in luxuriously sleek interiors for casual, yet sophisticated, living. The glam-orous spaces many designed for art-world clients, including Cindy Sherman and Lisa Yuskavage are anchored in tradition but reflect the relaxed sensibili-ties of our time. Cotton shares his multiscaled approach to design successful turns with his varied collections, which are often included in his interior projects. Furniture, lighting, wallpaper, tableware, and terra-cotta planters are part of his repertoire. Cotton s industrial designs like his interiors embody an intelligence and under-standing of design history. This book, the designer s first, documents the groundbreaking work of a rising and notable talent and should be in the libraries of designers and connoisseurs of fine living.

Steven Volpe combines a minimalist approach with a classical sensibility and a connoisseur s appreciation for authenticity. Adept at mixing pieces from different periods eighteenth-century pieces combine with midcentury furniture and contemporary art, for example Volpe brings a richness to his modern interiors. Volpe was one of the first to champion loft living, moving into a 75-year-old converted warehouse, but he brings his classical training into the modern spaces he favours. I learned what was appropriate and proper, and now I, too, can break those rules, he says. One of the ways Volpe breaks the rules is by melding art with decor in his interiors, endearing him to a sophisticated, artistic clientele. This volume showcases ten recent projects, exploring work in a range of spaces, from New York City penthouses and modernist California homes to a traditional London townhouse. Each project displays Volpe s refined sensibility and understated luxury, showing how he creates thought-provoking environments that quietly stimulate all the senses. With stunning photography and in-depth essays by Volpe and Architectural Digest writer Mayer Rus, this handsome volume offers inspiration and ideas to designers, art lovers, collectors, and homeowners.

Hailed as an icon in Hollywood, Madeline Stuart s work is exceptional. AD wrote, in a city driven by artifice and spectacle, Madeline Stuart celebrates understatement, authenticity, and elegance without affectation. The daughter of Mel Stuart, who directed Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (in which Madeline had a cameo) and a decorator mother whose work was favored by film stars, Madeline grew up part of the Hollywood elite. Her client list has included Larry David, the late Nora Ephron, Fleetwood Mac s Lindsay Buckingham, art collectors David and Susan Gersh, and many more. In No Place Like Home, Stuart shares eight recent houses, from her renovation of Cedric Gibbons s LA house to a newly built Montana ranch to a Mediterranean-inspired home on the coast of La Jolla, CA. All have been newly photographed for the book, with oversized detail shots mingling with full rooms and exteriors. Stuart shares her design process for each home, from her initial vision through execution. Committed to the notion of timeless design, be it modernist or traditional in inspiration, Stuart brings her extensive knowledge base to every home she designs. Her skill with scale, proportion and balance, along with her unexpected combinations of furniture and elements and keen sense of history and craftsmanship, result in richly layered residences that feel authentic to their period and place, while remaining always relevant, modern, and beautiful.

Alexandra and Michael Misczynski, the wife-and-husband team behind the Los Angeles-based AD100 design firm Atelier AM, are standard-bearers for the concepts of quality and connoisseurship. In an image-driven culture, where novelty and extravagance so often masquerade as virtues, the Misczynskis remain steadfast in their belief that true style can emerge only from substance. Architectural Digest Atelier AM has been the go-to designers for true connoisseurs since they opened their office in 2002. Taking on very few projects each year, each Atelier AM home is a complete masterwork where design and art are fully integrated into the architecture and landscape for a rich and immersive experience. Eight new homes are featured in this new volume, and each features Atelier AM s signature reverence for patina mixed with the new: reclaimed wood beams and well-loved vintage modern furniture pieces mingles comfortably with century-old artefacts and antiques. The projects in this volume show a deep understanding of design history from Spanish Colonial and English Classicism to contemporary. The mix of modern and ancient acknowledges and celebrates both the past and the future of design. With photography by their long-term collaborator Francois Halard, and insightful texts by Mayer Rus, Houses: Atelier AM promises to be as rich and satisfying as an Atelier AM home itself.
