Michael Bennett provides the first history of the global spread of vaccination during the Napoleonic Wars, offering a new assessment of the cowpox discovery and Edward Jenner's achievement in making cowpox inoculation a viable and universally available practice. He explores the networks that took the vaccine around the world, and the reception and establishment of vaccination among peoples in all corners of the globe. His focus is on the human story of the horrors of smallpox, the hopes invested in vaccination by medical men and parents, the children put arm-to-arm across the world, and the early challenges, successes and disappointments. He presents vaccination as a quiet revolution, genuinely emancipatory, but also the sharp end of growing state power. By the end of the war in 1815, millions of children had been vaccinated. The early success of the war against smallpox paved the way to further advances towards eradication.
There are few Aboriginal icons in white Australian history. From the explorer to the pioneer, the swagman to the drover’s wife, Europeans predominate. Perhaps the only exception is the redoubtable tracker who, with skills passed down by generation after generation for over 65,000 years, read the signs and traced the movement of people across the land. The saviour of many and cursed by the wayward, trackers live in the collective memory as one of the few examples where Aboriginal people’s skills were sought after in colonial society. In New South Wales alone, thousands of Aboriginal men and a smaller number of women toiled for the authorities post-1862, tracking the lost and confused, seeking out the thieves and their ill-gotten booty and bringing criminals to justice.More often than not the role of tracker went unacknowledged. Little about the complexity and diversity of their work is known, how it grew out of traditional society and was sustained by the vast family networks of Aboriginal families that endure to this day. Pathfinders brings the work of trackers to the forefront of New South Wales law enforcement history, ensuring their contribution is properly acknowledged.
'Lunch with the Kaiser' reveals the complex interaction of the European powers during the crisis of July 1914. Its conclusion, as to where responsibility for the outbreak of war should lie, challenges the accepted view in the English speaking world of the war being a product of German aggression, replacing it with a evidenced based narrative detailing how Austrian recklessness, Russian precipitation, German miscalculation and French ambition combined to set Europe on the path to war. The British decision is shown to have had as much to do with a policy miscalculation that had left its 'far flung and poorly defended empire' vulnerable to a resurgent Russia, as stopping the creation of a German hegemony in Europe. Based on a series of fictional interviews with Kaiser Wilhelm II, during October 1938 as he lived out his old age in exile, the book combines narrative history with a vivid account of this complex man, who was at the centre of late nineteenth and early twentieth century European history. Wilhelm is not absolved of responsibility for the outbreak of war, but his decisions are placed in the context of those made by others in Vienna, St Petersburg, Berlin, Paris and London.

Plato said over 2,500 years ago that ""an unexamined life for a man is not worth living."" To examine one's life, on a regular basis, cannot but lead to a consideration of virtue, which in turn leads to a search for the Good, which both Plato and Plotinus say all men naturally seek. What we call a good informs the value system we live by, but a good can only reflect the Good, if it is good for our soul and the soul of our neighbor, any more than we can claim virtue with a mote in our eye. Are the wrongs perceived in society also in ourselves, for where else could they have come from? So we need a different kind of inquiry and a different order of reflection; an inquiry that reveals errors in how we see things and a reflection that seeks a spiritual dimension to how we see things. It does not matter if it is called contemplation or meditation, for the principle of prayer has been with us ever since man first intimated the presence of the Divine. Michael Bennett is a retired secondary school teacher of English, which took up half this working life. The first half of his working life, after leaving secondary school, was spent working in the specialist field of chemical environmental analysis, with a developing interest in education. Previous practical interests have included poetry and painting; current interests are Platonism and the Platonic tradition through the Middle Ages.

Many aspects of laboratory medicine are affected by these differences, from basic, day-to-day operational issues through test selection for pediatric-specific disorders. However, most references in laboratory medicine merely touch upon pediatrics – and offer little if any coverage of variations in testing and results for different age groups, or the many diseases and disorders most common in infants and children. Pediatric Laboratory Medicine is specifically written to fill this critical void in the literature. Now, for the first time, all important reference material concerning pediatric laboratory medicine is available in one convenient, up-to-date resource. Pediatric Laboratory Medicine teaches the effective operation of a pediatric clinical operation, and also provides guidelines for teaching trainees. This unique text delivers the how-to instruction necessary to ensure proper handling and testing of pediatric specimens to ensure accurate diagnosis. Valuable learning aids include learning objectives, end-of-chapter review questions, and references for further study.Written by experienced clinicians, the book’s seventeen chapters cover virtually every important topic – from daily issues in the practice of pediatric laboratory medicine to common tests and considerations to inborn errors of metabolism and therapeutic drug monitoring. Enhanced by numerous tables and high-quality full-color images, this authoritative resource delivers everything necessary for effective pediatric laboratory medicine training and practice.

The Secular Sacred starts with a concern for the loss of meaning and moral motivation that followed the decline of religious and traditional values subsequent to the attack on them from relativism and postmodernism. It investigates how we might find a new basis for moral action that rests on a rational and secular foundation. Drawing on Habermas's theory of communicative action it argues that, within communication, there are inherent presuppositions that are universal. This work proposes that we can approach these universals (truth, justice and authenticity) as a basis for an understanding of a secular sense of the sacred.Following a brief critique of multiculturalism The Secular Sacred suggests that religions still articulate an interesting approach to such deep existential issues as loss, suffering and death. All of these fail to find an adequate response in rationalist cultures. It seeks to 'translate' such religious concepts as anamnesis, consolation, the Kingdom of God, the sacred, redemption and sin into a secular framework that can inspire moral motivation.Because reason is an insufficient source of moral motivation it investigate how narratives, which act like myths, can be reflexively constituted and interpreted. The rich symbolic texture of myths can be a powerful means of encouraging people to engage in an identification with the values enshrined in the secular sacred. Myths have a strong connection with ritual practices. It explores this relationship and proposes that it is perfectly possible to create new rituals that consciously know themselves to be rituals and are, nevertheless, able to provide support for the psychological transformations that myths can procure. This reflexive approach to the secular sacred and myths is based on the cognitive, emotional and psychological competence of people. Throughout there is an investigation into how these competencies work and a consideration into a range of aspects of selfhood (autonomy, authenticity, intersubjectivity, decentredness). These competencies, assisted by mythological narratives and rituals, are essential in enabling an identification with a secular sacred that can provide a basis for moral motivation.

Since Roman times Praxiteles' masterpiece has been known as the Lizard-Slayer. Yet collectors, scholars, and students have all puzzled over the meaning of the young Apollo killing a lizard. What could Praxiteles have had in mind? What was its original context? Praxiteles: The Cleveland Apollo shows that the answers to these long-standing questions are implicit in the bronze sculpture acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art in 2004. Representing Apollo's victory over the Python, the triumph of order over disorder, the Cleveland Apollo is most likely the only surviving original sculpture by Praxiteles, and the only life-size Greek bronze that can be securely attributed to a Greek sculptor by name. The author recounts the story of the acquisition and reveals the astonishing circumstances of its recovery: found on an East German estate where it had languished for decades in a ruined condition.

An in-depth, full-color, step-by-step guide to the new golf swing that has taken the PGA Tour by storm The traditional golf swing requires a level of coordination that few golfers have. So it's no surprise that, despite huge advances in club and ball technology, the average golf handicap in America has dropped by only one stroke since 1990. Maverick golf instructors Michael Bennett and Andy Plummer spent a decade researching the swing, eventually combining physiology and physics to create a method they dubbed the "Stack and Tilt." The result? Big-name pros like Mike Weir, Tommy Armour III, and Aaron Baddeley are already converts, and Bennett and Plummer are now two of the most soughtafter swing coaches in the game. Making these breakthroughs available to everyone, The Stack and Tilt Swing is a handsome, fully illustrated, complete course, packed with more than two hundred full-color photographs that make it easy for golfers at all levels to adopt this radical yet simple approach. Analyzing why the traditional swing won't work for most golfers, the authors explain the importance of keeping the upper body stacked over the lower body, while the spine tilts toward the target during the backswing, greatly reducing the inconsistencies created by the old-fashioned approach. Enhanced with practice routines, a troubleshooting list, test cases, and point-by-point assistance, this is the breakthrough guide to golf's hot new secret weapon.
