The Biochemical Basis of Sports Performance

The Biochemical Basis of Sports Performance

Some understanding of the biochemistry of exercise is fundamental to any study of the factors that contribute to sports performance. It is the physical, chemical and biochemical properties of cells and tissues that determine the physiological responses to exercise, and yet the teaching of exercise biochemistry is poorly developed compared with exercise physiology. Where the subject is taught, the student often finds the approach somewhat daunting, with its focus on thermodynamics, chemical structures and metabolic pathways. Many students find the subject difficult, when it should not be so. This book introduces the student of sports science or exercise physiology to the biochemical processes that underpin exercise performance and the adaptations that occur with training. The focus is on skeletal muscle metabolism and the provision of energy for working muscles and the principles of exercise biochemistry are introduced in a context that is immediately relevant to the student of sports science. Instead of the traditional approach of working through the main classes of biomolecules and metabolic pathways, the subject is tackled by considering the biochemical processes involved in energy provision for different sports events and the way in which limitations in energy supply can cause fatigue, and thus limit performance. Recovery from exercise is important for athletes who train and compete with only a limited rest period, and the biochemical processes that influence recovery and restoration of performance capacity are also addressed. The processes fuelling the activities that contribute to sport form the core of this book, together with the changes that occur with training and the role of diet in providing the necessary fuels. But sporting talent is a rare gift, and a brief description of its hereditary basis is included. · A complete introduction to the biochemical basis of sports performance, appealing to undergraduate students, coaches, and athletes · Numerous links made between biochemistry and physiology for an integrated view of the subject · The student is directed to carefully chosen further reading articles, allowing them to readily explore key topics in more detail Online Resource Centre The Online Resource Centre to accompany The Biochemical Basis of Sports Performance features: For students: · 'In the News' updates · Multiple choice questions · Hyperlinked bibliography · Extended case study following an athlete through a season, with exercises For lecturers: · Figures from the book, available to download

For students planning to work in a sport- or exercise-related career, it is crucial to understand the essential role nutrition plays in health, adaptations to physical activity and exercise, weight maintenance, and sports and exercise performance. Sport Nutrition, Fourth Edition With HK Propel Access, presents the principles and rationale for current nutrition guidelines for athletes and provides an in-depth look at the science behind sport nutrition. Using a physiological basis, Sport Nutrition aims to explain the role of nutrition in enhancing exercise performance. It moves from general principles of nutrition and nutrient requirements to estimating and fulfilling energy needs with the appropriate combinations of macronutrients and micronutrients. Supplements are addressed from a scientific standpoint, followed by the influence of nutrition on training adaptations, body composition, weight management, and eating disorders. Information on personalized nutrition covers periodized nutrition, sex differences, and special populations (young athletes, older athletes, and diabetic athletes) and offers practical examples from specific sports. The fourth edition is greatly enhanced with a new full-color format showcasing 40 new infographics and 50 additional figures and illustrations. These visual elements provide a more engaging experience, allowing students to fully comprehend important concepts, methods, and research findings. This edition features online access to references, appendixes, and glossary terms and definitions, providing useful explanations and at-a-glance information. New topics in this edition include the following: How to recognize good versus bad information about sport nutrition The role of gut microbiota and how this microbiome is affected by diet and exercise The function of macronutrients and micronutrients in relation to exercise performance and recovery Guidelines to limit gastrointestinal problems during exercise Electrolyte replacement during exercise in the heat The effects of exercise and nutrition on immune function and health outcomes, as learned from the COVID-19 pandemic Low energy availability and the causes and consequences of relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs) More than a simple prescription of recommendations, Sport Nutrition, Fourth Edition, offers a systematic presentation of the science supporting current nutrition guidelines. It is an ideal book to provide a comprehensive understanding of nutrition as it relates to sport, exercise performance, training, and recovery. Note: A code for accessing HKPropel is included with this ebook.

So often people equate being slim with being healthy, and with so many people searching for ways to lose weight, dieting books are in abundance. But so few of these books actually back their information with scientific research and proven weight-loss methods, instead relying on celebrity to sell the latest fad. Often these books do little to help people achieve their weight-loss goals, leading to frustration and even excess weight gain. That’s where The Pick ‘n Mix Diet comes in! This book will help the reader lose weight by using a very different approach from other diet and nutrition books. Unlike those books, the weight-loss plan presented here doesn’t require sticking to the same boring diet for several months, but rather incorporates 10 different diets that can be changed every week. These diets include reduced carb, reduced fat, high protein, low energy density, and various intermittent fasting diets—all backed by scientific evidence. By picking and mixing various diets, readers will prevent dieting boredom, have fewer cravings, and will be more likely to stick to their weight-loss plans. More importantly, the variety will ensure there are no nutrient deficiencies. In addition, the diets are combined with light to moderate exercise so that the reader will only lose fat, not lean muscle. Sticking to one boring diet for weeks on end is not the way to lose weight. Rather, this novel but evidence-based approach to weight loss is guaranteed to be effective, healthy, and safe. With The Pick ‘n Mix Diet, the reader will achieve any weight-loss goal!

Exercise and nutrition programs designed to achieve weight loss and improve health and fitness have received considerable attention in recent decades. Though a large number of books have been published on the subject, the vast majority of these books focus on the latest fad diet, usually alone or sometimes in combination with the latest fad exercise regimen, but they rarely provide scientific, evidence-based reasons for their use. Eat, Move, Sleep Repeat is very different. It provides a scientific evidence-based rationale for selecting certain diets and forms of physical activity that can help to achieve effective body fat and body weight loss; explains how to develop a personalized weight loss plan; gives guidelines for a healthy balanced diet; provides advice on how to improve sleep quality, avoid common illnesses, keep senses, and organs healthy and how much exercise is needed to get health benefits. Meant for every fitness goal, fitness level, and occupation, The Healthy Lifestyle Guidebook aims to provide a set of evidence-based guidelines on how to establish a healthy lifestyle that will promote better quality of life with reduced risk of chronic disease and extend longevity.

Sports Science is a rapidly expanding area, with student numbers on University courses increasing faster than for many other academic subjects. While there are a large number of suitable texts on exercise physiology, there has of yet been no such text for the area of exercise biochemistry. Biochemistry is also an area that students taking these courses usually have the greatest difficulty in understanding. The Biochemistry of exercise and training provides a broadly based introduction to those aspects of biochemistry relevant to exercise science. For students of biochemistry, physiology, and sports science, the book will enable them to develop a solid understanding of the fundamentals of biochemistry. Throughout, the focus is on physiological chemistry, dealing with those biochemical processes that determine the metabolic response to exercise, and the way in which these responses are influenced by training. The authors have taken account of the rapid advances being made in the field of physiological chemistry, and by providing the reader with a broad understanding of the fundamental concepts, they should then be able to integrate these future developments with their existing knowledge of the area.
