If you feel like politics and politicians have sunk into a hopeless pit of divisiveness and insincerity, you need this book. Amy Uelmen identifies some of the burning questions of our times: Does voting the wrong way constitute a sin? Are my misguided friends being inadvertently duped by political machines to make sinful choices? Are my misguided friends being inadvertently duped by political rhetoric that sounds good, but produces no social change in practice? The 5 steps she proposes will help you ask the right questions and establish parameters that can produce actual dialogue rather than simultaneous monologues in your family, church, community, or town hall meeting. The insights are: (1) Believe it is possible to have a positive vision of politics; (2) Practice and refine communication skills based on love; (3) Understand where there is and is not room for compromise; (4) Recognize suffering as a springboard for love; and (5) Build the polis with constructive action.

Happiness and the Art of Being

Happiness and the Art of Being

Happiness is our true nature, our essential being. The transient happiness that we seem to derive from external experiences actually arises only from within ourself, and is experienced by us due to the temporary calming of our mind that occurs whenever any of our desires are fulfilled. So long as our mind is extroverted, attending to anything other than our own essential self-conscious being, we can never experience perfect, permanent and unqualified happiness. To experience true and eternal happiness, we must attain the experience of true self-knowledge - that is, absolutely clear consciousness of our own essential being, 'I am'. Such is the truth revealed by Bhagavan Sri Ramana. The philosophy of Sri Ramana derives solely from his experience of true, absolute, non-dual self-knowledge, an experience that transcends all thought, both rational and irrational. However, since we imagine the existence of duality, multiplicity and relativity, we seem to lack the non-dual and absolute knowledge of our own essential self-conscious being that Sri Ramana experienced as his natural state. Therefore he presented his philosophy to us in terms of a rational and logical analysis of our present experience of ourself as a finite individual consciousness, in order to enable us to be firmly convinced of the absolute reality that underlies and supports this finite consciousness that we now mistake to be ourself. However, the spiritual teachings of Sri Ramana are not only a rational philosophy, but are also a precise science and art. He intended his philosophy to serve only as the theoretical foundation upon which we should practise the empirical science of self-investigation (atma-vicara), which is the art of keenly self-attentive and therefore perfectly thought-free being. This book, Happiness and the Art of Being, is an in-depth exploration of both the philosophy and the practice of the spiritual teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana. Though it is intended primarily to be an introduction to his teachings, it is not a brief one, because in a clear and simple manner it provides a very detailed and deep insight into their core. Therefore though it has been written with the intention that it should be easily understood even by readers who have no previous acquaintance with any form of spiritual philosophy, it should also be useful to readers who already have a good understanding of his teachings. Like the aim of his teachings, the aim of this book is to prompt each one of us to think more deeply about the reality of all that we as a seemingly limited individual consciousness experience and know, to help us to understand that the only absolute reality in our entire experience of duality and relativity is our fundamental consciousness of our own essential being, 'I am', and thereby to reinforce our love and effort to attend keenly and exclusively to this essential self-consciousness 'I am' in order to discover its true nature. The author of this book, Michael James, spent more than eight years studying the original Tamil writings of Sri Ramana and of his foremost disciple, Sri Muruganar, in minute detail under the clear guidance of another close disciple, Sri Sadhu Om. Therefore the central focus of this book is on the teachings of Sri Ramana as expressed in his own original writings, and hence it contains accurate and carefully worded translations by the author of the whole of Sri Ramana's prose treatise Nan Yar? (Who am I?) and of most of the verses of his philosophical poems such as Upadesa Undiyar, Ulladu Narpadu, Ekatma Pancakam, Anma-Viddai and Upadesa Tanippakkal. This second print edition is a slightly revised version of the first print edition, and contains a detailed glossary. Treatment of Ventricular Fibrillation

Treatment of Ventricular Fibrillation

The annual incidence of sudden cardiac deaths in the United States is about 300,000 cases. Ventricular fibrillation (VF) remains an important cause of sudden death both in hospitals and in the community contributing to about half of these cases, although in monitored setting with rapid response times, VF is the presenting rhythm in almost three quarters of these patients. Despite an overall declining trend in the incidence of VF, the management of the arrhythmia remains challenging due to the fact that the event is usually unexpected and almost certainly lethal in the absence of resuscitation within the first few minutes. There has been a dramatic improvement in survival from VF due to the introduction of defibrillation as a part of resuscitation but in a significant proportion of patients, the process of resuscitation proves futile due to lack of return of spontaneous circulation or significant neurological disability caused by cerebral anoxia.

Norman Barry: Scholar, writer, friend. In March 2009, a symposium was held in honour of Norman P. Barry at the University of Buckingham, where he had been Professor of Social and Political Theory since 1984. Intended to mark his retirement, the symposium became a fitting commemoration following his death in October 2008. Contributors to this collection include Stephen Davies, Mustafa Erdogan, David Henderson, Terence Kealey, Julian Morris, Alan Peacock, Mark Pennington, Martin Ricketts, Colin Robinson, Charles Rowley, Nathanael Smith and Elaine Sternberg. A few years before his death, Barry's reputation as a scholar and exponent of classical liberalism earned him a commission to write a book on Ronald Dworkin, a leading exponent of modern liberalism. Sadly, Barry was unable to complete the project but he did compose an extended essay on Dworkin. The complete version of this essay is included in this collection, a welcome compensation for the vigorous contribution Norman would undoubtedly have made at his own retirement symposium.Barry's earlier publications include Hayek's Social and Economic Philosophy (1979), On Classical Liberalism and Libertarianism (1986) and The New Right (1987). In the later years, his focus on applying classical liberal principles to a range of public policy issues resulted in a number of publications including Welfare (1990) and Business Ethics (1998). As a political theorist engaging with economics, he was an effective expositor of the Austrian School of economics and of the public choice analysis of government. His An Introduction to Modern Political Theory, first published in 1981, appeared in its fourth edition in 2000. Norman Barry was a dynamic and engaging writer and teacher who harnessed his talent, wit and irony to communicate complex ideas to wide and varied audiences. Classical Liberalism is a wonderful homage to a well loved and influential man.
Litigation with a Foreign Aspect

Litigation with a Foreign Aspect

This is a practical guide to the problems which arise when litigation has a foreign element, for example: · The defendant is resident abroad: do the English courts have jurisdiction? · Is it best to bring proceedings in England or in another country? · How do you enforce a foreign judgment in England? · Can you get security for costs because the defendant is resident abroad? · When do the English courts apply foreign law? This area is a minefield. It may require navigating through complex EU instruments -the Judgments Regulation, the Brussels or Lugano Conventions - and working out how they relate to each other and to the traditional common law rules. Difficult tactical points may arise, such as whether to ignore foreign proceedings on the basis that a foreign default judgment may be unenforceable in England. Practical issues may include how to serve process in any particular foreign country - can you do it by post, or through agents? Must you serve through official channels? This book deals with these matters in a practical non-academic way, with detailed guidance to procedure. It sets out the jurisdictional rules in alphabetical order based on the type of claim - contract, insurance, land etc - and clearly explains the inter-relation of the different regimes. It addresses controversial issues such as whether the English courts can ever decline to exercise jurisdiction derived from the EU instruments. It has a focused treatment of specialist areas such as insolvency, employment and shipping. It makes extensive use of tables, flow charts and examples.

This examination of modern black theology creates a new paradigm known as Integrasegreology, which offers a corrective theory to the polarization of the ideologies of Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It also addresses the important social and theological deficiencies in Dr. James Cone’s original introduction of black theology. Integrasegreology acknowledges the importance of integration and separation theories and espouses the creation of new values, individual and collective vocations, and the definition of Black Power-Black Consciousness and its seven critical aspects. It also argues that black theology should not be an end in itself, but serve the greater purpose of the liberation of oppressed blacks throughout the world.
