ALL OF MY ATTEMPTS TO HELP TREY HAD BEEN FRUITLESS. No one understood, especially the doctors and counsellors, that Trey never wanted help. He didn't feel the need to survive and didn't care about death. He was ruining his life, but that didn't concern him. For years, I painfully watched him, with a mother's sorrowful heart, turn to the world of drugs. He believed that he would never achieve the success he hungered for without them and dismissed the idea of overdose because it couldn't happen to him.His intense belief brought ever-changing hazy green eyes, wild with a fierce craving for more creativity. I could hope that the day I dreaded would not come, but it did. Trey's insatiable drug habit abruptly ended when he overdosed, died, and survived, leading us down a long and eventful path.With little hope and many doctor's doubts, I started the journey to defy all odds. A journal and pen were all that I needed, as I found time to write every day. The words "He's getting better" were written repeatedly in different words but with the same meaning. I knew my son had three essential things to recover fully, MOTIVATION, HUMOR AND FAMILY SUPPORT, as I put all three into play. Trey became a warrior too. He couldn't give up. After all, he was on a mission, A MISSION TO HAVE THE LIFE THAT HE WAS BORN TO HAVE.The memories will live inside me forever, but the words I wrote in the journal are in the hope that I never hear another mother cry.

The beauty on the Northern California coast remains a manifest destiny. Everything surviving appears as a detour, but this is in fact an optical illusion. Ridges once full of forests and small out of the way towns are cleared by nature and stretching one's direction to the limit: does one look away or take this in as a still changing vista. Having seen it at a distance I can only rely on the first hand experiences of friends who witnessed it close up during a time when this region seemed like an island instead of the mainland. Just before turning my head I heard their comments strain, yet they told me in reassuring voices that this will eventually all grow back. Their examinations, and my far removed need to formulate my own opinion through theater, allows me to cast this idea of how a cold, very exposed and unfavorable coastline could be turned into a more denoted play. And so I become the playwright, and once more using what I could to assemble to build these voices into natural objects.

This is a first venture into the world of science fiction. There is a blending of things from one's past and then finally emergent on the far end as knowledge based, followed by learned behavior that is part genetic, biological, cultural and now social. One is tempted to argue that one can differentiate as a scientist, however the final measure just might be old fashioned cause and effect from an artist's point of view. Who gets to decide?

What I have written in this book is a collection of short essays, each pertaining to a specific topic, including many types of love, motorcycles, just life, the dark side, Christmas, and what I will call more of my journey. Included in each of these topics are several short essays that pertain to the abovementioned titles. It is my belief that when writing about an event or a time in your life, there can be an almost equal amount of fiction and truth which can result in an interesting read. I truly enjoyed writing this book and selecting the various topics from hundreds of pieces I have written over the past four decades. My journey through life has been a ride I will never forget. I hope you find a personal meaning in one or more of these pieces that stir up a special time in your life, a smile, or even a sentimental tear. Bill Dooley left a lucrative career as a music talent scout to pursue his dream of being a mountain lodge owner. Sadly, his big plans soon turn to nightmares. Partygoers are attacked. The enemy is just a single cell in hundreds that have invaded America to find hidden nuclear weapon plans. Some of the employees are forced to do as their captors say--like Lauri, who must serve the enemy food, drinks, and anything else they may desire.Bill devises a plan to take back the mountain, even if they have to go underground to survive. Other townsfolk get creative, devising weapons out of crude farming equipment while staying alert at all times. As the leader, Bill must stay strong to keep things in some kind of order, find a way to rescue Lauri, and stop the infiltrators.
