This book is a sequel to Instruments of Peacemaking 1870-1914 in that it considers how attempts were made to settle disputes between states without recourse to war after ‘the war to end all wars’.It considers the idealism of President Wilson's Fourteen Points which formed the basis for the Armistice in 1918, and his scheme for a League of Nations providing for self-determination of nations and ‘collective security’ for European states. It goes on to analyse the key challenges that faced statesmen and jurists in attempting to resolve disputes under the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles. It considers the consequences of the Peace Conference of 1919 that failed to give France security guarantees and aroused German animosity through loss of territory, population, and payment of reparations. Despite its defects the treaty was an instrument for resolving disputes and tensions between the victors and the vanquished. The book considers cases referred to the Reparations Commission and to arbitration under the Treaty of Versailles regarding boundary, industrial property, and shipping including the Lusitania claims. More importantly, it analyses the diplomatic challenges faced by statesmen after 1919: the attempts at disarmament, the Locarno Arbitration Agreements, and the subsequent crises in Abyssinia, the Rhineland, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. The decline and failure of Wilsonian idealism, the League of Nations, collective security, and diplomacy is traced through the various diplomatic exchanges that took place between governments from official records and contemporaneous accounts of the times as well as academic sources. The attempt to resolve the Sudetenland crisis by the mediation of Lord Runciman is included as part of the diplomatic intervention by Mr. Chamberlain to appease Hitler. The final chapter looks at American Foreign Policy in the context of isolationism, and Anglo-American Relations and concludes with analysis of the Army, Navy and Congressional Enquiries into the attack on Pearl Harbor.

A full account of the making, during 1909-10, of Der Rosenkavalier with emphasis on its derivation from a French opérette of 1907, L'Ingenu libertin. L'Ingenu libertin was seen in Paris by Count Harry Kessler and formed the basis of the opera then to be written by Hofmannsthal and Strauss. Previous scholarship has credited the narrative and characters of Der Rosenkavalier to much older French sources known to and studied by Hofmannsthal, but this book shows clearly how every element in L'Ingenu libertin is in fact taken (and transformed) by Kessler and Hofmannsthal into the work that made fortunes for Hofmannsthal and Strauss, but left Kessler on the sidelines. Michael Reynolds casts a major new light on Strauss's most popular operatic success, highlighting in particular how it was that Hofmannsthal - who had not until then had any theatrical success as an original playwright - was advised and empowered by Kessler to produce a work that succeeded onstage from its very first performance and went rapidly on to conquer the stages of the world. Michael Reynolds is an established writer on opera, a translator and an online music critic, an interest that he sustained throughout thirty years in the world of international diplomacy. His previous book for Boydell, About Suffolk, was an anthology of writing about his adopted county.
This book focuses on Anglo-American disputes arising out of the civil war in the United States and British interests in the American continent: the Geneva Arbitration, the Venezuela-Guiana Arbitration and the Bhering Sea Arbitration. It draws on those cases as model proceedings which laid the foundations and inspiration for a promotion of international law through the Hague Conferences and by the work of English and American jurists. It considers the encouragement these cases gave to the promotion of public international law and how that contributed to the resolution of inter-state disputes.

Abortion is the most controversial topic in modern society. Politics and religion even cause divisiveness among like groups. The topic is tossed around like it was normal behavior among civilized society throughout history. Nothing is further from the truth. Those of us who do the talking about the subject do not fully understand the topic completely. When people talk about abortion, they leave out all the side effects physically and spiritually. Read what truth is being left out, keep an open mind while doing so.

Much has been written about Jochen Peiper, though it is unlikely he would have been heard of outside Germany but for the infamous massacre near Malmedy, Belgium, with which his name has been forever associated. Initially shunned and even despised in the years following Germany's surrender, Peiper is now revered and generally accepted as a brilliant solider. This meticulously researched book explores Peiper's youth, his career with the SS, the now famous trial of the officers and soldiers of the Leibstandarte, who were accused of war crimes, and Peiper's murder in France over thirty years later.

Steel Inferno provides a unique insight into the experiences of 1st SS Panzer Corps, one of only two units in the German Army which bore Hitler's name, during their fight against their Allied adversaries in Normandy. This meticulously researched book also explores the origins, formation and organisation of the unit, and examines some of their more remarkable achievements during this bitter fight. It also lays to rest the myth that these two remarkable Waffen-SS divisions were annihilated in Normandy. In fact, though the Allies could never forget or forgive the attrocities the Wehrmacht and SS troops commited, many admired the Panzer Corps, and one compared fighting with them to 'fighting with tigers'.

The only two divisions in the German Army that bore Hitler's name formed his I SS Panzer Corps. This is the story of their participation in the Battle of Normandy. Michael Reynolds has meticulously researched the battles between these young Waffen-SS soldiers and their Allied adversaries. He brings a new balance to the overall picture and uniquely qualifies 'the enemy' in each action, dissecting the British disasters at Villers-Bocage and in Operation GOODWOOD, describing the desperate effort of the Americans to stem the German counter-attack at Mortain and detailing the costly advances of the Canadians and Poles as they moved to trap the Germans. Major General Reynolds lays forever to rest the myth that these two remarkable Waffen-SS divisions were annihilated in Normandy, and concludes that we may not see their like again.
