In 1939, several hundred people - students, professors, international chess players, junior military officers, actresses and debutantes - reported to a Victorian mansion in Buckinghamshire: Bletchley Park. This was to be 'Station X', the Allies' top-secret centre for deciphering enemy codes. Their task was to break the ingenious Enigma code used for German high-level communications. The settings for the Enigma machine changed continually and each day the German operators had 159 million million million different possibilities. Yet against all the odds this gifted group achieved the impossible, coping with even greater difficulties to break Shark, the U-Boat Enigma, and Fish, the cypher system used by Hitler to talk to his guards.

For 2nd and 3rd year courses in international politics and foreign policy. This text examines foreign policy in relation to 'change and transformation.' It discusses traditional assumptions about foreign policy and foreign policy making, and develops a framework to facilitate analysis of the challenges faced by foreign policy makers in the late 1990s. The central elements of the framework are the foreign policy arena, decision-making and implementation. The book then applies the framework to a set of regional case studies, to explore the global and regional arenas and the challenges to which they give rise. Finally, specific case studies of two countries per region highlight the range of impacts for the changing global and regional context, to focus on the analysis of decision-making and implementation, and to illustrate the benefits of comparative analysis.

The problems of boys in schools, especially in reading and writing, have been the focus of statistical data, but rarely does research point out how literacy educators can combat those problems. That situation has changed. Michael Smith and Jeff Wilhelm, two of the most respected names in English education and in the teaching of reading, worked with a very diverse group of young men to understand how they use literacy and what conditions promote it. In this book they share what they have learned. Through a variety of creative research methods and an extended series of interviews with 49 young men in middle and high school who differ in class, race, academic achievement, kind of school, and geography, the authors identified the factors that motivated these young men to become accomplished in the activities they most enjoyed - factors that marked the boys' literate activities outside of school, but were largely absent from their literate lives in school. Their study questions the way reading and literature are typically taught and suggests powerful alternatives to traditional instruction.Building their findings on their understanding of the powerful and engaging experiences boys had outside of school, Smith and Wilhelm discuss why boys embrace or reject certain ways of being literate, how boys read and engage with different kinds of texts, and what qualities of texts appeal to boys. Throughout, the authors highlight the importance of choice, the boys' need to be shown how to read, the cost of the traditional teaching of difficult canonical texts, and the crucial place of meaningful social activity. The authors' data-driven findings are provocative, explaining why boys reject much of school literacy and how progressive curricula and instruction might help boys engage with literacy and all learning in more productive ways. Providing both challenges and practical advice for overcoming those challenges, Smith and Wilhelm have produced a book that will appeal to teachers, teacher educators, and parents alike.

The first major biography, exhaustively researched from new material including major revelations involving his previously unknown and secret private life, of Lawrence Edward Grace 'Titus' Oates who became a dashing cavalry officer and hero in the Boer War, a successful jockey and who paid [pound]1,000 to join Scott's doomed South Pole expedition, before becoming a national hero for sacrificing himself to save his comrades. First biography for over 30 years of the enigmatic and private Captain Oates. Substantial new information from previously undisclosed sources, especially relating to his clashes with Scott. Having paid [pound]1,000 to join Scott's South Pole expedition, he was at centre stage in the unfolding tragedy, becoming a national hero for sacrificing himself to save his comrades. Fresh analysis of his military career, both as hero in the Boer War, where he was denied a VC, and later in Ireland. Offers a different perspective from the traditional myth of Scott's heroic failure and Oates' suicide. Examines Oates' private life and the role of his austere mother who exerted a powerful influence during his life and continued to control his memory long after his death, especially by ordering the destruction of his letters and diaries, kept hidden by her, and previously thought to have been destroyed, from her deathbed. Beautifully illustrated with maps and photographs, many previously unpublished.

Europe's Experimental Union challenges conventional writings on European integration by situating the analysis of the EU in the context of changing patterns of political and economic order. The authors conclude that the union is not evolving towards a federal superstate, but rather, is an arena of deep economic integration governed by a prismatic polity characterised by innovation, experimentation, pragmatism, decentralisation and devolution. Although it may seem unsettleed, this book reveals that in fact the experimental nature of the EU enablwes it to respond to multiple agendas and Europe's diversity in a flexible manner.

These recipes are taken from cookery books collected over many years and spanning several centuries.English food has long been overshadowed by the cuisines of Continental Europe but now, with a new generation of chefs adding novel twists to traditional recipes, it is enjoying a renewed vitality and rerum to popularity. Michael Smith's highly acclaimed book is centered on recipes from the eighteenth century, before the Industrial Revolution wrought such dreadful damage to English cooking and the influx of French chefs after 1789 did so much to change culinary fashions.Traditionally, English cooking is generous in its use of herbs and spices and adventurous in its combining of flavors. This collection contains such delights as mustard soup, baked sea bass with fennel, mushroom soup with madeira, salmon in red wine, butter'd oranges and a full range of potted meats and fishes. Based on the wide variety of ingredients found in a temperate climate, traditional English cookery was on occasion rich and heavy, but more often than not nutritious and healthy, as recipes for fried cucumber with dill, parsley soup, pippin pie and gooseberry and rosemary ice-cream all testify.
