King of Swords explores the concept of free will and illustrates the projection of Jungian archetypes. The story depicts the lives of the author's great-grandparents, who witnessed the events of the Spanish-American War in Puerto Rico.

Literary short stories set in Puerto Rico and New York City by accomplished novelist, short story writer and children's book author Miguel Antonio Ortiz, born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. He grew up in the South Bronx and is a graduate of the City College of New York. He was publications director at Teachers & Writers Collaborative. Subsequently, he worked at Chase, Merrill Lynch, and TIAA-CREF.
Mario goes for a walk with his father in their home city Bayamon, Puerto Rico. They run into a friend of his father's, who went fishing and offers them a fish. Mario's father asks him to take it home. Mario is pleased to carry home the fish and glad for the company of a cat, but soon one cat becomes twenty-five, noisy and hungry cats.
