Claims that Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, and Ethel "Etta" Place returned from South America have been circulating for many years. Some authors reject the argument that the two outlaws were killed in San Vicente, Bolivia, on the night of 6-7 November 1908, asserting that the evidence that the two men were Butch and Sundance is not robust. But others argue that specific, named, individuals were Butch, Sundance, and Ethel, who lived out their lives in the United States. Do any of these specific claims stand up to scrutiny? This book is the successor to Mike Bell's 2019 book Who Are Those Guys? and the follow-up Watching the Detectives, which explored the creation and operation of the Union Pacific's Mounted Rangers, popularly known as the Bandit Hunters. In the spring of 1902 the Union Pacific ran out of patience with the traditional methods of dealing with train robbers. Long chases after robbers who had frequent changes of horses and a friendly local population had proved to be largely ineffective in preventing attacks on the railroad. To deter attacks the Union Pacific hired Tim Keliher, former Sheriff of Lincoln County, Nebraska, to lead the Wyoming Division of the Special Service. Keliher and his boss, William T. Canada, hired the best lawmen, hunters, and riflemen they could find, arranged for a special train and the best horses they could find and created the Union Pacific Mounted Rangers- the Bandit Hunters. The Bandit Hunters were so effective that there were no major attacks on the Union Pacific for more than fifteen years. The success of the Bandit Hunters was due, in part, to a major publicity campaign that made it clear that they were patrolling the Bandit Belt, from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to the Utah line. By 1905 the Bandit Hunters had been stood down, but the legend went on. They featured heavily in Buffalo Bill's triumphant tour of the United States in 1906 and 1907 that played to packed arenas across the country. And the Bandit Hunters played a central part in the 1969 film, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The fact that they were created a year after the two outlaws had left the United States was a minor inconvenience to the scriptwriters. Almost one of the last acts of the Bandit Hunters was to have their photographs taken as part of the 1905 publicity campaign, photographs that have been used to illustrate many books on Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch and are still claimed to be pictures of the posse that pursued the Tipton train robbers. In this work Mike Bell reveals when and where the famous photographs were taken.

The Day the Train Robbers Came explores the events of the 7 June 1904 Parachute, Colorado, train robbery, but with particular emphasis on the people of Grand Valley who went out to fight the train robbers, and the Denver and Rio Grande train crew who had no choice but to face them. In this English Westerners' Society Special publication, Mike Bell explores the train robbery in detail and analyses the contenders for the train robber who was brought down by the ranchers of Garfield County in the fight on Gibson's Flats on 9 June 1904

Wyoming Outlaws, Butch Cassidy in Wyoming, 1889-1896, is the result of fifty years of research by author Mike Bell.It brings together his three previous volumes on Cassidy in Wyoming, published by the English Westerners' Society. This history began as the search for Billy Nutcher, who sold Cassidy stolen horses, and for Jack Bliss, the man who led the horse thieves. It became a history of the horse thieves and the long-forgotten horse thief war that has been overlooked by historians because of the the Johnson County War of 1892, which dominated the press at the time and has held the attention of historians and the public ever since. The horse thief war was far more wide-ranging and lethal than the Johnson County War, covering parts of three states and killing nine men. This book tells the story of Cassidy's forgotten years in Wyoming, and of the war to end horse theft, a war that nearly killed Cassidy. It also follows the careers of many of the men who rode with Cassidy at that time.

In January 1970 I began as Head of English at Haslingden County Secondary school. It was a Victorian building on Ryefield Avenue near the Fire Station. A popular TV series at the time was Family at War - which I hated. It ran for almost three years and a total of fifty-two episodes. My family, unfortunately, loved it. Each Tuesday, therefore, I would retire to my study in a huff and write a chapter or two of this novel. Each Wednesday morning I had my favourite third-year class and I would read the next episode to them. Those lessons were among the most rewarding I ever taught in a thirty-eight-year career (thirty-four of them in Haslingden). The class was so responsive, earnestly discussing each chapter; debating whether this character would act the way I said they did. The most valuable part of the lesson, however, was the last bit. Here I received many suggestions for what they wanted to happen next. I used about half of their ideas. About six years ago, I retired to my place in the sun and joined my son in Thailand. I sold my house and car. I gave away most of my building tools and warm clothes and packed my suitcase. I took the original manuscript of the book as it was the most precious thing I had. Since coming to Thailand, I have completed three other books and I am in the middle of two others. They say you always remember your first; well this is it.
