This book offers a synthesis of social science and evolutionary approaches to the study of intergenerational relations, using biological, psychological and sociological factors to develop a single framework for understanding why kin help one another across generations. With attention to both biological family relations as well as in-law and step-relations, it provides an overview of existing studies centred on intergenerational relations – particularly grandparenting – that incorporate social science and evolutionary family theories. This evolutionary social science approach to intergenerational family relations goes well beyond the traditional nature versus nurture distinction. As such, it will appeal to scholars across a range of disciplines with interests in relations of kinship, the lifecourse and the sociology of the family.

Presenting new insights into reciprocity, this book combines Marcel Mauss’s well-known gift theory with Barrington Moore’s idea of mutual obligations linking rulers and the ruled. Teasing out the interrelatedness of these approaches, Reciprocity in Human Societies suggests that evolutionary psychology reveals a human tendency for reciprocity and collaboration, not only in a mutually cooperative way but also through increasing retributive moral emotions. The book discusses various historical societies and the different models of the current welfare state—Nordic (social democratic), conservative, and liberal— and the repercussions of the neoliberal policies of tax havens, tax cuts, and austerity with a cross-disciplinary approach that bridges evolutionary psychology, sociology, and social anthropology with history.

Pari- ja perhesuhteet ovat pitkään olleet murroksessa. Yksi avioliitto lapsineen ja lapsenlapsineen ei ole enää ainoa vaihtoehto ikääntyvillekään. Mutta millaisia vaihtoehtoja sen rinnalle on noussut? Väestöliiton vuoden 2021 Perhebarometri selvittää ensimmäistä kertaa suomalaisten yli 50-vuotiaiden parisuhteiden trendejä ja tilannetta. Tätä ikäryhmää edustavilla, laajoilla rekisteri- ja kyselytutkimusaineistoilla tarkastellen piirtyy kiinnostava kuva moninaisista perhe- ja parisuhdehistorioista. Kuinka yleisiä läpi elämän kestävät liitot enää ovat? Ketkä eroavat, ja ketkä solmivat uuden parisuhteen yli 50-vuotiaana? Avioliitto on vielä monin paikoin Euroopassa ikääntyvien ylivoimaisesti yleisin parisuhdemuoto, mutta miltä tilanne näyttää Suomessa? Esitämme myös tuoretta tietoa ikääntyvien parisuhdeonnesta ja riitojen aiheista. Kuinka moni on pohtinut eroa nykyisestä kumppanistaan? Entä mikä on lastenlasten rooli isovanhempiensa hyvinvoinnissa? Väestöliiton Perhebarometri 2021 on suunnattu kaikille ikääntyvien suomalaisten parisuhteista ja hyvinvoinnista kiinnostuneille.

Perheenjäsenten, ja etenkin sukupolvien välisten suhteiden, merkitys korostuu väestön ikääntyessä. Esimerkiksi lapsilla ja isovanhemmilla ei ole koskaan aiemmin ollut yhtä paljon jaettuja elinvuosia kuin nykyisin. Sukupolvien ketju -hanke on seurannut suomalaisten vuosina 1945-50 syntyneiden suurten ikäluokkien ja heidän aikuisten lastensa elämää ja auttamissuhteita jo yli vuosikymmenen ajan. Sukupolvien suhteet -tutkimusraportissa esitellään Sukupolvien ketju -hankkeen kolmannen kierroksen eli vuonna 2018 toteutetun aineistokeruun tuloksia. Lisäksi tarkastellaan auttamisessa ja yhteydenpidossa kyselykierrosten välillä tapahtuneita muutoksia. Raportti tarjoaa selkeän ja havainnollisen yleiskatsauksen kyselyaineistojen tuloksista.
