The use of ceramics in biological environments and biomedical applications is of increasing importance, as is the understanding of how biology works with minerals to develop strong materials suitable for the clinic. Bioceramics have been revolutionizing the biomedical field in the form of bone grafts, fillers, implants and metal implant surface coatings for use in humans. Efforts are focusing on understanding and improving the biocompatibility, physico-chemical and mechanical properties of such materials and devices, with the attention directed towards the development and potential use of ceramic/ceramic composites, at micro-, nano- and pico-scales. Ceramic-based and/or ceramic-incorporated biomaterials are being biologically evaluated through several in vitro, in vivo and clinical tests. This book presents a review of recent research and developments in the pre-clinical and clinical use of bioceramics, its derivatives, and other bioceramic-based biomaterials and coatings in the fields of medicine and dentistry. An in-depth look into material processing, characterization, optimization, performance and cell/tissue interactions is presented with an overview of the potential of bioceramics in therapeutic agent and stem cell delivery, tissue engineering extending into the future perspectives of bioceramics, in an attempt to address the frequently asked questions relating to the development, characterization, modulation, optimization, and safe application of ceramic materials and ceramic-coated devices.

Nanofiber Composite Materials for Biomedical Applications presents new developments and recent advances in nanofiber-reinforced composite materials and their use in biomedical applications, including biomaterial developments, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. Unlike more conventional titles on composite materials, this book covers the most innovative new developments in nanofiber-based composites, including polymers, ceramics, and metals, with particular emphasis on their preparation and characterization methodology. Selected case studies illustrate new developments in clinical and preclinical use, making the information critical for the development of new medical materials and systems for use in human health care, and for the exploration of new design spaces based on these nanofibers. This book is essential reading for those working in biomedical science and engineering, materials science, nanoscience, biomedical nanotechnology, and biotechnology.

There are several well-known books on the market that cover biomaterials in a general way, but none provide adequate focus on the future of and potential for actual uses of emerging nanontechnology in this burgeoning field.Biomaterials: A Nano Approach is written from a multi-disciplinary point of view that integrates aspects of materials science and engineering, nanotechnology, bioengineering, and biosciences. The book fills a glaring void in the literature by providing a comprehensive discussion of biomaterials and a scientifically plausible extrapolation of likely scenarios in which nanotechnology could play a significant role. The authors introduce and examine basic concepts, processing methodologies, and techniques involved in the preparation and characterization of nanobiomaterials that are specific to biomedical applications. A Self-Contained Book Illustrating Past, Present, and Future Trends in BiomaterialsSpanning from the historical development of biomaterials to cutting-edge advances in the field, the text describes how basic concepts in nanotechnology are applied to the processing of novel nanobiomaterials, including nanostructured metals and alloys. With its illustrative examples and presentation of applications, this text offers a solid framework for understanding present and future trends of biomaterials in human healthcare systems. It is an ideal companion resource for students, researchers, and industrial scientists who specialize in biomaterials and nanobiomaterials.
