After exposing the dark origins of his world on the distant planet of Nabatea, Azad is a fugitive, hunted across the galaxy by the fearsome Vitruvian Authorities. But to lead a passive society into revolution, Azad and his crew must enlist the unlikely help of a space pirate with an agenda all her own. Their adventures once again draw them into the past, into the early days of settlement on Nabatea, where a death continues to haunt the fledgling community and a mother must contend with her son’s monstrous vision for their new home.
Kezza, an aerialist in the Martian circus, can never return to Earth – but she can assassinate the man she blames for her grim life on the red planet. Her murderous plans take an unexpected turn, however, when she uncovers a sinister secret. A thousand years into the future, Azad lives a safe but controlled life on the beautiful desert planet of Nabatea. His world is upended when he joins a crew of space-traveling historians seeking to learn the true reason that their ancestors left Mars. Separated by time and space, Kezza and Azad’s stories collide in the Martian desert.
Arab Science Fiction is largely unknown internationally, for this reason, Arabilious would like to make you discover nine short stories written by authors coming from Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria. The recurring themes of the stories include the effects of new technologies on Arab society, deeply rooted in community life and far from Western individualism, as well as anxiety about the devastation produced by climate emergency or nostalgia for a past which, although difficult and troubled, it is still able to ensure cultural roots and identity to the characters. The stories included in Arabilious are therefore full of melancholy, social tensions derived from political conflicts, and the need to distance themselves from the categories and clich s formulated by the West. All these themes mix with the rich literary tradition of the Arab peoples and their past as colonized communities to propose nine futuristic scenarios, alternatives to the existing reality.
