The cornea is the clear, outer layer at the front of the eyeball. It acts as a window to the eye. The cornea helps to focus light rays onto the retina, this image is then transmitted to the brain. When the cornea is damaged, it can become less transparent or its shape can change. This can prevent light reaching the retina and causes the picture transmitted to the brain to be distorted or unclear. A corneal transplant, also known as keratoplasty or a corneal graft, is an operation to remove all or part of a damaged cornea and replace it with healthy donor tissue. It is used to improve sight, relieve pain and treat severe infection or damage. One of the most common reasons for a cornea transplant is a condition called keratoconus, which causes the cornea to change shape. (NHS.UK) This book is a guide to corneal transplantation (keratoplasty) for ophthalmic surgeons. Divided into seven sections, the text begins with an overview of evolution, preoperative considerations, and eye banking. The following sections cover a multitude of keratoplasty techniques, including endothelial keratoplasty, and their potential complications. The book concludes with discussion on alternatives to corneal transplantation. The third edition of this comprehensive manual has been fully revised, with new topics added, to provide surgeons with the latest advances in the field. A selection of operative videos can be accessed via a QR code provided in the book. The previous edition (9788184488593) published in 2010.
Value-Creating Global Citizenship Education for Sustainable Development
This volume brings together marginalized perspectives and communities into the mainstream discourse on education for sustainable development and global citizenship. Building on her earlier work, Sharma uses non-western perspectives to challenge dominant agendas and the underlying Western worldview in the UNESCO led discourse on global citizenship education. Chapters develop the theoretical framework around the three domains of learning within the global citizenship education conceptual dimensions of UNESCO--the cognitive, socio-emotional, and behavioral--and offer practical insights for educators. Value-creating global citizenship education is offered as a pedagogical approach to education for sustainable development and global citizenship in addition to and complementing other approaches mentioned within the recent UNESCO guidelines.

This book fills an existing gap within the practice of global citizenship education by offering Asian perspectives. In this book, Soka or value-creating education developed by the Japanese educators, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (1871-1944) and Daisaku Ikeda (b. 1928) is compared to the ideas of the Indian political leader Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948). This study of their respective thoughts and movements has a significant bearing on the three domains of learning within the global citizenship education conceptual dimensions of UNESCO – the cognitive, socio-emotional, and behavioral. This book deftly combines theoretical discussions with themes and suggestions for practice and future research.

A pterygium is a growth that develops on the conjunctiva or mucous membrane that covers the white part of the eye. It is a benign or noncancerous growth that is often shaped like a wedge. In some cases, a pterygium can extend to the cornea. A pterygium usually doesn’t cause problems or require treatment, but it can be removed if it interferes with vision. The exact cause of pterygium isn’t known but one explanation is that too much exposure to ultraviolet light can lead to these growths (Healthline.com). This book is a comprehensive guide to the diagnosis and management of pterygium. Divided into four main sections, the book begins with an introduction to pterygium, and its etiopathogenesis, possible causes and diagnosis. The following sections explain numerous surgical techniques for its management, covering both traditional and newer procedures; and treatment of recurrent pterygium. The final section describes challenging situations in the management of pterygium including post surgical complications, and its treatment with co-existing disorders such as cataract, glaucoma, and corneal opacity. The text is highly illustrated with clinical photographs and is accompanied by an interactive DVD ROM. Key Points Comprehensive guide to the diagnosis and management of pterygiumCovers both traditional and newer surgical techniques, and recurrent pterygiumDiscusses post surgical complications and treatment with co-existing disordersIncludes interactive DVD ROM

Descemet’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK) is the current preferred technique of Endothelial Keratoplasty and involves replacing only the inner endothelial cell layer, rather than the whole thickness of the cornea, as happens in a conventional full-thickness graft (ChadRostron.co.uk). This reference is a guide to the technique of DSAEK. Beginning with an introduction to the procedure and pre-operative evaluation, the following chapters discuss in detail different surgical techniques, including pre-operative preparation, anaesthesia, the procedure, post-operative follow up and complications. Authored by recognised specialists in Australia, Hong Kong and India, this comprehensive manual includes more than 230 full colour illustrations and radiographic images, as well as a DVD demonstrating surgical techniques. Makiguchi and Gandhi explores ideas about Japanese educator Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (1871-1944) and Indian political leader Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) as examples of inspiration for large mass movements in the 20th century. Based on research done in Japan, India, Hawai'i, and the United Kingdom, this book breaks new ground by examining and theorizing the fate of dissident thinkers and raises the question often asked by both Gandihan and Soka scholars alike- were they truly radical thinkers?
