These twelve essays by international scholars investigate Melanchthons theological activities as teacher, confessor of the faith, and defender of his doctrine and ecclesiastical policies as they developed within the context of his service of society and church. In the past quarter century Melanchthon researchers have scrutinized older, mostly negative, interpretations of the Preceptor Germaniae. The editors present in this volume precisely focused appraisals of "Master Philip" in his role as theologian at the university and in the service of his own prince and others. Der universitäre Elfenbeinturm ist für Melanchthon eine politisch brisante Institution, und Wissenschaft zu betreiben ein notwendiger Dienst an der christlichen Gesellschaft. Alle Wissenschaft, auch die Theologie, bedarf der rechten Methode, denn diese bietet die Möglichkeit, gerade in politisch schwierigen Zeiten die Gebildeten auf der Grundlage gemeinsamer Erkenntnisse zusammenzuführen.Nicole Kuropka untersucht Melanchthons Sicht auf das Verhältnis von Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft. Wissenschaftliche Methodik, wahre theologische Erkenntnis, politische Gesprächsbefähigung und das Bewahren von Frieden und Ordnung gehören für Melanchthon untrennbar zusammen. Der Zusammenhang von Theorie und Praxis zeigt sich bei dem Gelehrten, Kirchenmann und Politiker Philipp Melanchthon.
