Anna Persson är docent i statsvetenskap och verksam som forskare och universitetslektor vid Statsvetenskapliga institutionen, Göteborgs universitet. Hennes forskning är inriktad mot jämförande politik och politisk ekonomi med särskilt fokus på hur formella och informella institutioner påverkar och samspelar med staters kapacitet inom centrala utvecklingsområden så som korruption, beskattning och välfärd.

They do so by revisiting several classic texts in social science, demonstrating their timeless relevance for understanding society and the role of knowledge, and relating them to contemporary issues and debates. Although often depicted as having limitations compared to "hard" sciences, the book argues that the methodologies used in social science enables it to act as modernity’s critical conscience by embracing the essential qualitative and critical view that is its true essence. Contemporary calls for making social science relevant to society should be met by staying true to this approach and thus remain relevant rather than attempting to become relevant. Innovation is generally viewed as something inherently good, a source of progress and prosperity in our society. But innovation can also have negative, unintended, and wasteful effects, if policies are misdirected and organizations pursue innovation to look good and convey a message, rather than to actually achieve improvements of technologies, services, and products. This book makes the case that innovation has become a buzzword, a political cure-all, and increasingly an empty phrase, and that this has become detrimental to innovation itself.Governmental (and supra-governmental) innovation policy is often unrealistically phrased and shaped, and corporate innovation projects are not seldom meaningless acts of window-dressing. The book describes the problems this presents for society, organizations, and individuals, and seeks explanations for why it has come to be this way. Giving way to a more realistic view of what innovation really is, and how it can beaccomplished, the book develops a multifaceted sociological and historical argument where several complementary reasons for the prevalence of “empty innovation” are proposed. Begreppet hybrid har formligen exploderat och man kan knappt läsa en tidning eller en produktannons i dag utan att stöta på detta ord. Åtskilliga studier inom ämnen som företagsekonomi, organisationssociologi och statsvetenskap säger sig också handla om just hybridorganisationer. Samtidigt uppstår då frågan vad begreppet egentligen tillför och om det bidrar till vår förståelse av organisationer. Kännetecknas inte alla organisationer, i någon mån, av hybriditet i form av möten mellan olika intressen och hänsyn? The European Spallation Source (ESS) is by far the largest Big Science facility ever built in Sweden. First proposed in the early 1990s, it took until 2015 before construction could start, and when it did, it was at an unlikely place. Lund, Sweden, a small village in the outskirts of Europe, is neither a neutron stronghold or among the usual suspects for hosting European Big Science. This book tells the story of how the ESS ended up in Lund. It traces the idea of a Scandinavian ESS from the first meetings of enthusiasts in 2000, through the near-collapse of the project on European stage in 2003 2005, the political breakthrough in 2007, and the decision in favor of Lund in 2009. It analyzes the campaign on local, regional, national and international stage, its political struggles, its efforts to downplay risks by promising spectacular returns for investment, and the painstaking process of getting European governments to approve Lund as site for the ESS, and make the required investments. Olof Hallonsten has written a unique story about how a very large European research facility survived and ended up in Lund, in a small country. It shows how traditional European policies, favoring large countries, broke down, but also how decentralized and democratic Sweden managed to come to a decision in a difficult trade-off between huge costs and possible, but by no means sure benefits. It also shows how Europe still suffers from its reliance on national funding for Big Science, and therefore from cumbersome site decisions. It analyses changes to the political and sociological frameworks surrounding publicly-funding science, and their impact on a number of new accelerator and reactor-based facilities that have come to prominence in materials science and the life sciences. MAX-lab was a Swedish national research facility for synchrotron radiation, nuclear physics, and accelerator physics, in operation between 1986 and 2015 and located on the northern campus of Lund University. This report is the result of a comprehensive analysis of the impact of MAX-lab on science, economy, and society, and on local, national and international level. The report is based on official documentation, statistics, interviews, and previous studies of the history of MAX-lab.
