A Course in Meditation

A Course in Meditation

nidottu
A 21-day experiential course designed to give readers a taste of meditation as it was taught by the contemporary mystic Osho, Osho was a mystic and a scientist, a rebellious spirit whose unique contribution to the understanding of who we are defies categorization. His only interest was to alert humanity to the urgent need to discover a new way of living. Osho's understanding was that only by changing ourselves--one individual at a time--can the outcome of all our "selves"--our society, our cultures, our beliefs, our world--also change. The doorway to that change is meditation. Osho saw how difficult it was for the hyperactive 21st-century mind to just sit silenty and watch the breath. Out of this observation he created new meditations to address the unique challenges of this generation. Presented in easy-to-understand language and an easy-to-navigate format, A Course in Meditation includes a 21-day program for applying meditation and mindfulness to release the tensions and stress of the body and mind in order to relax into an experience of still and silent awareness. Each day of the program introduces a different aspect of meditative living with a simple, practical meditation and awareness exercise related to the subject of the day.

Peace talks, peace agreements, peace movements… Why is it, although there is a deep longing for peace in the world, every day, wars are being waged? And why, although so many people long for peace in their lives, does peace seem to be an impossibility even on a personal level? In this series of talks, Osho explains how peace can only become a reality when rigid religious practices and political ideologies are dropped, and an awakened consciousness takes their place. The key to finding peace is transformation, both outer and inner, one person at a time, and in this book Osho indicates how through meditation this can be achieved. “Finding this truth, touching the shadow of this truth, is known as finding peace. Whoever finds this truth becomes totally calm, at last finds tranquility. Find truth and like a shadow, peace will follow. The shadow of truth is peace.” Osho

Kabir says, gurudev bina jev ke kalpana na mite The first step towards search is lack of knowledge. The ignorant lives his imaginations. Imagination is the formula for ignorance and truth is the formula for knowledge. Teacher holds you by your hand and walks you toward truth. Teacher frees you from imagination. If you walk on your own then there are 100% chances of losing your way. He already has found what you have started to search now. The distance between you and your teacher is clear, you are at the starting point and he is at the ending point. Very rarely, we come across nutty people like Kabir. But whosoever reads his doha actually reads his thoughts, sees his devotion, and becomes one like him, crazy, nutty. Osho was one of such crazy people. He gave a new dimension to Kabir s doha . He illustrated those meanings through his sermons. This is an exclusive invention by two novel crazies, Kabir and Osho.

The tradition of Tantra or Tantric Buddhism is known to have existed in India as early as the 5th century AD. In this book Osho talks about the mystical insight of Tantra that is to be found in these ancient writings. Mining these ancient Tantric writings and meditation practices Osho illuminates such concepts as the nature of darkness and light, the paradoxical wisdom of the "pathless path," and reverance for the body as a bridge to the divine. No matter how complex, esoteric, or obscure the subject, Osho always examines it from a uniquely refreshing perspective - he uses time honoured traditions as a hook to bring timeless truths to the widest possible audience with irreverent wit and thought-provoking inspiration.

Waking up or awakening means that the dream is over - the dream of unconsciousness we all spend most of our lives in - often a life of tensions, anguish, feeling unfulfilled and running after illusions which are just substitutes of what we are really looking for. This little book is actually a big book, containing Osho's entire teaching from an early period of his public life and teachings. He takes us through three steps on the path to awakening, steps to help us to get out of our conditioning, our limitations and frustrations. "There are only three steps: freedom of consciousness, simplicity of mind, and emptiness of mind."For freedom of thought, for liberation of thought, and for the awakening of intelligence, the first thing, the first awareness that is needed is: “No thought is mine. No thought is mine.” While we read this book, Osho takes us through this experience of letting go of identification, allows us to get a glimpse what a life of awakening can be.

The feeling that it is five minutes to midnight is known to many by now, and is often referred to as the "Doomsday Clock." As the many crises faced by humanity and planet Earth gather and tumble toward an emergency, some have even reduced the time left to two and a half minutes. It is no wonder that we feel increasingly helpless and at a loss what to do.Osho calls Zen not a teaching but an alarm to wake us up, because as individuals we are all deeply asleep, and this sleep has to be shattered. “For centuries, you have been asleep. Sleep has become your nature. You have forgotten what awareness is, what to be awake means.” He wants us to wake up…before it is too late.Zen, more than any other religious or spiritual tradition, is relevant to such times as these, when none of our old approaches to solving problems will do. Immediate, urgent, and direct, Zen is not interested in answers or in questions, not interested in teaching at all, because it is not a philosophy. As Osho begins here, by quoting the great Zen master, Diae: “All the teachings of the sages, of the saints, of the masters, have expounded no more than this: they are commentaries on your sudden cry, ‘Ah, This!’”In this series of talks, Osho unfolds a selection of classic Zen stories and responds to questions. Along the way, we learn how the tools of Zen can be used to embrace uncertainty, to be at ease with not-knowing, to act decisively and with clarity and awareness. To "get woke," in other words, so that we can use each moment between now and midnight for transformation.

Can Yoga make you happy - what is the secret of happiness? While the practice of Yoga is now being widely embraced by the West in context with health benefits, body flexibility and as a relaxation method, in a world where most of us now have on a material level almost everything we need, the spiritual aspects and questions of quality of life, happiness and well-being are center stage questions now. To be happy is now more valued than material riches, money and prestige which many have but realize that they did not find happiness through them.Osho continues his presentation and analysis of the original Yoga sutras by Patanjali Yoga: The Science of the Soul, with ten extraordinary talks addressing key issues in our lives. Such incredible teachings and lessons are hidden in these ancient scriptures.According to ordinary thinking to be friendly with someone who is happy is very easy. The truth is it is not! In fact, is one of the most difficult things in life. If somebody is happy, immediately you are shocked - how is it possible? How come you're not happy the other is? This seems like injustice. With the happy you feel jealous - in a subtle competition. You feel inferior with happy people. You may show your happiness, but that's just a facade, a show, a mask. Learn about the secret and once the secret is known, once you know how one becomes happier, and how with others' happiness you create a situation for yourself to be happy, there is no barrier; you can go as far as you like. Learn the secret of being happy with the whole universe, with every flower, river, rock and star; become one with this continuous eternal celebration. This remarkable OSHO Classic belongs in everybody's library!

The book you hold in your hand or you are just ordering from an online store is a unique book. It is the first book by the contemporary mystic Osho. At the beginning of his public life, Osho who is at that time a professor of philosophy at Jabalpur University, introduces people to a new and unique understanding of meditation during experiential meditation camps. He speaks to the participants and responds to questions. This book is the first published records of Osho's first meditation camp in Rajastan, India. In fifteen small chapters he gives a condensed presentation of his understanding of meditation which he then elaborates in many more talks and publications - but the essential message is already available in this book. Osho speaks to the individual, not to a collective, not the abstract collective of humanity, or a collective defined by religion or nationality or race but to individuals as the core element of existence. We used one of his opening comments as a longer quote on the front cover of the book as it seem so important "The individual is the unit of the whole and it is through him that both evolution and revolution can take place. You are that unit." Osho, mentions this book on several occasions in his later talks. When the second prime minister of India traveled to Russia, a copy of The Perfect Way was with him. And when someone in contact with Osho at the age of ninety stumbled upon The Perfect Way, he commented, "All my learning of the scriptures was futile, only this small book is enough." In The Perfect Way the reader meets a human being who knows, but who also knows how to convey what he knows. His genius in full flight, he points us as far as one can with words toward the inner world of the self, toward the zone of silence. What starts on a hot summer day in the early 1960's will prove to be the first seed of a revolutionary experiment in the flowering of human consciousness - one which will eventually transform the lives of millions of people all over the world. "To be without thoughts is meditation," Osho says. "When there are no thoughts, it is then we come to know the one hidden by our thoughts. When there are no clouds, the blue sky is revealed." This book is page after page of blue sky.

Osho thrusts his sword into the heart of the matter of what we collectively call "Human Rights." One of the struggles we face as human beings is how to cope with, how to bring light to, how to dissolve the roots of the perverse and incomprehensible horrors -- physical, psychological, spiritual -- that we seem capable of inflicting on one another. What are the roots of wars, of torture, of murder and hatred and our all-too-easy dehumanization of the "other"? He quotes the language of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to expose the hollowness of the words. Why is our human reality on this planet so far off from these beautifully worded declarations? Osho exposes the hypocrisy and the vested interests that underlie the core of that document and so many others like it. But he doesn't stop there. He challenges us to create a new language, a new narrative, a transformative and liberating vision of what it means to treat one another with awareness, with love, and with respect. In our individual lives, as in the lives and generations of our society, there is a revolution, a transformation that happens alongside each change that happens in consciousness -- individual and collective -- as our technology continues to bring us (potentially) all together into a "global village." And alongside it, the change in consciousness that is now required of us, as a common humanity living on a smallish and rather beautiful, sacred planet. To see ourselves as God's creation, if you will. Or Gaia, or whatever term of oneness most appeals to you. This small volume is an opening to the revolution in consciousness that is so urgently needed for our times.

Osho is the first of this type, always representing a fresh religiousness, totally novel, knowledgeable, mystic, occult. Kabir s dohe are like a shawl woven by the different threads of human experiences and life. Each thread stands for the values of life, each a shining facet with a dimension. Love, dream, truth, ego, title, prestige, sati. Kabir has explained each aspect with perfect examples as was his peculiarity, while Osho sheds light on Kabir s qualities. Kabir himself lives a human life, but reveals the formula of becoming free, he also seeks our attention towards living in the present with an eye on the future. He brings it to our notice that in this huge cosmos, we literally possess nothing, whatever we see around is all HIS , hence whatever leaves after we are no more is the eternal truth. Kabir also points out to the importance of a teacher. He tells us that guru is the indication to reach the almighty. At the end Kabir admits that he has achieved the god, saying kahe Kabir mai pura paya

“Enlightenment” in Western cultures has long been associated with the 18th-century movement that brought about a new “age of reason”. As Zen, Buddhism and other Eastern wisdom traditions have captured the imagination of the West, “enlightenment” has come to be known as a specific state of consciousness attained by an individual on a spiritual or meditative path. However, the Judeo-Christian context, with its belief in a divine power “out there” and separate from the individual, hinders most Westerners’ ability to comprehend “enlightenment” in the Eastern sense. Our theistic conditioning leads to such common misunderstandings as perceiving enlightenment as the attainment of supernatural powers, or as something achievable only by those who are somehow “special”. In this work, Osho deconstructs these misunderstandings and offers a radically different view of enlightenment, freed from all spiritual and religious beliefs – including the distortions of asceticism and renunciation that have arisen in Eastern and Western cultures both. Taking the reader step by step through the history of how both East and West have approached the mysteries of the human mind and spirituality, Osho offers a simple science of consciousness that he calls “the psychology of the buddhas”. It is a science that in very clear terms shows how one can, through awareness and taking full responsibility for one’s life, go beyond all limited belief systems, habits, and superstitions of the mind. That process, he says, brings us back to our nature – and that is enlightenment.

Although the word 'psychology' does not come up in this book, this early work by Osho shows his deep understanding of the subject and his attempt to make the connection between meditation and a modern understanding of psychology that includes the importance that our minds play in determining and giving direction, on many levels, to our lives.Osho has taught for many years that meditation is not a religious exercise but a scientific method to understand what the mind is, and how it works, and to learn how to create a healthy distance from what is, in many ways, a programmed and robot-like mechanism that seems to be dominating our lives and decisions and activities more and more – and not always in a positive way.As Osho has said so often, beginning many decades ago - that humanity is afflicted by a deep and fundamental insanity, and that we initiate each new generation of children into that madness - is now becoming more and more obvious. The children who refuse to be initiated into that madness will appear rebellious or mad to their elders, who persist with the best intentions to force them onto the same path, to participate in the same madness. "It is utterly dangerous to be sane in this world," Osho says. "A sane person has to pay a heavy price for his sanity."Osho pleads in this book for what he calls an independent mind, independent thinking – and challenges us to question our belief that we are already great independent minds, a belief based on the lack of understanding that our thoughts mostly come from others, like a computer program full of malware downloaded into our brains. "What I mean by the thinking state is that you should have eyes, what I mean is the ability to think on your own. But I don't mean a crowd of thoughts. We all have a crowd of thoughts within us, but we don't have thinking within us. So many thoughts go on moving within us, but the power of thinking has not been awakened."In his early days of teaching Osho ran meditation camps in which he introduced people into meditation, and his morning and evening talks created the framework of understanding for this work. This book is a fascinating record of one of these camps – in a short period of three days Osho introduces his participants to an understanding that our minds are running on malware programs – and he introduces meditation as an antivirus to clean our minds of the conditionings and indoctrinations that are preventing us from realizing our full potential and to be happy."In the coming three days I will talk to you about the search for life...I must first say that life is not what we understand it to be. Until this is clear to us, and we recognize in our hearts that what we think of as life is not life at all, the search for the true life cannot begin.""When you have something authentically your own in your mind, you start moving toward the soul. Then you become worthy, then you are able to know the soul. Until you have an independent mind, it is simply impossible for individuality to be born."

After decades in which women have started to take control of their own lives and have stepped out of old roles and restrictions to become independent of men, the focus now turns to men. The question at hand is, ?What now Adam?Men's liberation has not happened yet. Not only women but men also need a great liberation movement--liberation from the past, from the slavery of life-negating values and social conditionings that have been imposed upon them for thousands of years."Man needs a new psychology to understand himself,? says Osho, and the basic understanding that needs to be deeply imbibed and experienced is that no man is just male and no woman is just female; each man is both man and woman, and so is each woman - woman and man. Adam has Eve in him, and Eve has Adam in her. In fact, nobody is just Adam and nobody is just Eve: we are Adam-Eves. This is one of the greatest insights ever attained. But throughout history men have been conditioned to deny and reject their feminine qualities, to suppress their so-called "feminine" responses and feelings, and this has been reflected in the suppression of the female element in the outer world. Unless each man can start to discover his own inner woman, he is going to be tied up in a frustrating search for female qualities on the outside, in the outer woman. Each man needs to reintegrate his feminine qualities in order to become healthy and whole, complete within himself.Unless the individual man starts to come out of his robot-like, mechanical functioning and unawareness and begins to live his life with self-love, awareness, and deep respect for his real nature, there seems to be no chance that our world can escape global suicide."Being a man or being a woman is an accident" says Osho. "Just like being a German or an Indian is an accident, being black or white is an accident ? all of these things are not our choices - but you are lost in the accidents! You are too worried about them, your whole time and energy is wasted in them, and you become so occupied with the non-essential that the essential is forgotten."The essential for Osho is what he calls the being ? simply the being ? which is not accidental, but is destined. Rather than trying to figure out what it is to be a man, Osho suggests to find ?that which is absolutely destined. That is your nature, that is your essence.”In his playful and insightful way Osho looks at all of the different facets of the varying roles men play, showing how these qualities have shaped and influenced society. He shows how energies that are so often channeled into aggression and negativity can be transformed into creativity and personal evolution, and provides meditative techniques as a practical aid to moving through this process. The book functions as a mirror, using common archetypes to structure the wealth of material that is available from Osho on the subject of Men's Liberation. These archetypes - Adam, The Robot, The Beggar, The Lover, The Politician, The Gambler, The Creator, and so on - should not be understood as fixed types of character or personality but simply useful descriptions of certain tendencies, conditionings, and trained behavior patterns of the personality, common to all of us.As Osho indicates, our reality lies beyond all these stereotypes and categories. The archetypal concepts are used to help us recognize our particular mind-sets and then move beyond the mind’s limitations and confinements. To go beyond the personality and discover the original face, the real and essential self.
