Originally published in 1949, this volume The Atomic Age contains six lectures delivered under the auspices of the Sir Halley Stewart Trust in 1948. Following the first detonation of an atomic bomb in 1945 the Western world was very concerned about the impact of nuclear war. This book reflects on the consequences at that time from a number of different angles. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1949. The language used and views portrayed are a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

First published in 1937, What is Ahead of Us? is a collection of essays, which were originally presented as lectures before the Fabian Society. Conceived in an era of growing fascism and economic despair, the essays urge the reader to imagine more equitable alternatives to capitalism. The authors offer socialism as a solution but what is more interesting is their criticism of capitalism and the connections they draw between capitalism and fascism using examples from the West. This book will be of interest to students of history, economics and political science.

Atomic Weapons and East–West Relations

Atomic Weapons and East–West Relations

P. M. S. Blackett

This book was originally published in 1956, it provides an analysis of atomic power up until the time of publication. Professor Blackett divides the use of atomic power into three periods: the time of American atomic monopoly, the time of American atomic superiority and the time of atomic parity with Russia. In analysing these periods, Blackett provides an unconventional but reassuring estimate of the situation. Much of the extreme anxiety in the West, he argues, is the result of faulty military and political thinking, with Western countries making particular errors of judgement in terms of the atomic arms race. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in atomic power and the Cold War.
