Twenty-five-year-old Seminole Toby Tiger lives in despair in the Florida Everglades. He loves the land and everything that exists in the natural world: the deer and egrets, turtles and herons, cypress trees and sawgrass, ponds and marshes, and, most of all, Allapattah, the crocodile. He watches helplessly as the white man imposes his will on the Seminoles, forcing them either to conform or to eke out a living wrestling alligators and carving trinkets for tourists. According to Toby, the whites "destroy all that they touch." Toby refuses to bend to the white man's will and fights back the only way he knows how. He becomes Allapattah, a creature that earns his respect and protection.

In 1942 alone, German U-Boats sank almost four million gross registered tons of Allied ships convoying goods and war supplies to the war ravaged European continent, Britain and North Africa. That same year, college student Jimmy Kindall, who longs for adventure, leaves his small Mississippi town to join the Merchant Marine. He soon finds he is drawn to the excitement and camaraderie on his Liberty ship the SS Juniper Springs and easily slips into the sailor's life. However, it isn't long that he discovers that supplying the troops in unprotected waters exposes him to some of the fiercest battles in WWII, testing not only his grit and courage but his sanity as well. The Seas That Mourn, written by the author of A Land Remembered, is a riveting story of the unsung heroes who navigated dangerous waters and perilous conditions to provide American and Allied troops with critical supplies of ammunition, fuel and goods. These sailors, often overlooked and even belittled for their service, were key in turning the tide of the war.

In 1983, Florida author Patrick Smith and his wife Iris traveled throughout the Soviet Union and Uzbekistan through an invitation from the Soviet Writers Union. Smith relates these experiences through fascinating stories and images in this fun, factual chronicle. Excerpt from the book: "This story takes place in a time when the former Soviet Union was still very much the Soviet Union and was known throughout the Western World as "The Iron Curtain." It was a land of mystery and intrigue and few Americans visited there except in guided tour groups. Fewer still were given the opportunity to mingle freely with the people. This book is in no way a political treatise. It is a story of people, places, and things. Perhaps it will give the reader an intimate glimpse of ordinary, everyday people both in Russia and Middle Asia. Hopefully, it will also bring alive some fascinating places you may never have the opportunity to see first-hand." You'll enjoy Patrick's unique brand of humor as well as heartfelt moments. He paints vivid pictures of places few Americans have seen or will see. There is also much in this book for food lovers to enjoy as well. The descriptions of food, both Russian and Uzbek, are exceptional. In Search of The Russian Bear is unlike any other book set in Eastern Europe and Middle Asia. It's an enthralling journey to exotic lands, shared by one of Florida's great storytellers.

In the year before he wrote Angel City, Patrick Smith did what he called "physical research," disguising himself and joining migrant crews as they picked whatever vegetable was in season. He mentally recorded the events he encountered and wrote the novel is just a few weeks. His reason for writing Angel City? "The first step toward eliminating injustice is to expose it," he said. Angel City was made into a TV movie in 1980.

Patrick D. Smith, award-winning author of A Land Remembered, Forever Island, and other classic novels about Mississippi and Florida, wrote The Beginning in the 1960s at the height of the Civil Rights movement. He offered an inside perspective on its effect on the people, both black and white, caught in the upheaval of the changing South. Now a new generation of readers can reassess the times and the decisions of those who lived through them. Midvale is an imaginary small town in southern Mississippi in the 1960s. Life moves at a pace set by its long, hot summers and dirt-poor economy. The African-Americans know their place and pretty much keep to it in "the quarters," a dilapidated section of town. The whites, mostly merchants and farmers, know their place too, living quiet, family-oriented lives. A reasonably friendly atmosphere prevails in this segregated society. Then Washington begins passing new laws, and a current of unrest ripples through town as a few blacks, for the first time, register to vote. Angry segregationist Sim Hankins demands that Sheriff Ike Thornton do something to stop it. Sheriff Thornton has his own ideas of what should be done to improve race relations: rehabilitation of "the quarters" with indoor bathrooms, new roofs and paint, and paved streets. But his plan triggers violence between those who would keep the old ways and those willing to make a beginning toward the new. Then the outside world arrives in the form of two young white Civil Rights workers determined to start a "freedom school." The resulting violence and bloodshed carry the story to a climax not unlike the 1960s' newspaper headlines.

In a corner of the Big Cypress Swamp, to the north of the Florida Everglades, lives Charlie Jumper, and eighty-six-year-old Seminole man. Unlike the younger American Indians who have adopted white civilization, Charlie and his wife cling to the old ways, hunting and fishing in the great swamp and farming a tiny plot of higher ground. Charlie has been diligently teaching his grandson, Timmy, about the swamp and its creatures. But their simple existence is suddenly threatened when a large tract of swamp is bought by a corporation, and Charlie is told that he will have to leave. From his youth, Charlie remembers the slaughter of egrets and alligators by the white man and the logging of the giant cypress. Rather than surrender the land that is his life to this final indignity, Charlie decides to fight back. It is an uneven contest. First come the great machines that silt up the streams; then the workmen inadvertently poison the marsh; and, attempting to sabotage the construction equipment, Charlie’s best friend is killed. Realizing that there can be no compromise with the white man who destroys all he touches, Charlie leaves his family and feels into the swamp, seeking the lost island known in the Seminole legends as Forever Island.
