Historically, the Golden Triangle on the Mekong River has been a strategic yet largely impoverished crossroads between Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and southern China. The new transnational "economic corridors" connecting northern Thailand and southwestern China via key border towns in Myanmar and Laos have greatly increased the volume of trade and transshipment in the region. Logistical improvements via the highways and ports have transformed entire towns and districts in Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand, bringing with them an influx of Chinese investment and tourism, and other population movements.The transformation of the economy of the Golden Triangle is ongoing and relatively uncharted. There is evidence of unequal benefits to the countries involved. Combining official data, observations, and interviews with a wide range of participants in this new border economy, this book provides an important and unique perspective on the impact of the new economic linkages in the region.

On the night of 29 June 1860 three-year-old Francis Kent was kidnapped from his room, murdered and his body dumped in an outside lavatory. Eleven people were in the house, two of them sleeping in the same room as Francis, and the building itself was isolated and impenetrable. There were three possible suspects, and the case initially appeared straightforward, but the police found themselves up against the dead boy's mysterious family, who appeared to be covering up a dark secret from their past. The ensuing investigation became legendary for its mismanagement, incompetence, infighting and corruption. Eventually, amidst frenzied public interest, Constance Kent, Francis's half-sister, was convicted and sentenced to death, but because of uncertainty over her confession, this was commuted to penal servitude for life. Paul Chambers re-investigates this famous case, and demonstrates conclusively who the murderer really was.

It was described at the time as the most perfect crime ever committed and became a mystery that obsessed Victorian England. There were three court cases, which all ended in confusion. Eventually Constance Kent confessed, was found guilty and sentenced to hang. After a public outcry the sentence was commuted to twenty years' penal servitude. Paul Chambers investigates what really happened in the style of Inspector Poirot, bringing in material that has only recently become available. It shows that the case replicates many of the mistakes made by more recent investigations.
