GOD IS ON THE ROAD Would you like to grow in awareness of God's presence in your life? Paul Dixon shows how experiences of driving lead to reflections on living, alerting us to the inner pilgrimage-a journey we are all called to make. Whether you are a believer or an unbeliever, God is on the highway of life and He wants to journey with you. This book's metaphoric use of driving and the road scene will help you to listen and respond to God who is deeply in love with you. God is on the Road is written for the general reader. It is a Christian spiritual book, yet relevant for all seeking love. The book functions like a pair of divine driving glasses, helping you glimpse God's presence in your life. Each chapter is packed with short reflections to be dipped into a little at a time, challenging you to reflect on your life-your love story-with and to God. "God is on the Road is designed to help the reader to slow down and spend time with God. There are many aphorisms that stop the reader in his (her) tracks. This book would make an excellent addition to the seminarian reading list. Its many comparisons would provide some telling anecdotes for Sunday homilists. This is an original, thoughtful and helpful book." Canon David Annear (Ret.), Diocese of Plymouth, United Kingdom.

Two brothers. One fight. When Glenn McCrory won the IBF Cruiserweight title to become the first boxing World Champion from the North East, it was just one remarkable achievement in an extraordinary life. He sparred ninety-six rounds with Mike Tyson. He pioneered Sky Television's boxing coverage and was with the network for over twenty-five years. He offered to fight Lennox Lewis in a car park. He auditioned for the roles of Ivan Drago and James Bond. Throughout it all, from the stunning highs to the many lows, Glenn has drawn inspiration from his adopted brother, David, whose battle against the disease that would eventually claim his life was fought with bravery and dignity. From being Champion of the World to hitting rock bottom and being diagnosed with depression, Glenn reveals all in his hard-hitting autobiography. Just like the man himself, it packs quite a punch. ---------------------------- About the author: Glenn McCrory is a former IBF Cruiserweight World Champion who fought Lennox Lewis and sparred with Mike Tyson during a ten-year professional boxing career. He was a broadcaster for Sky Television for over twenty-five years and remains a regular and recognisable face and voice in boxing broadcasting. He still lives in his native North East.

The Militarisation of British Democracy

The Militarisation of British Democracy

Paul Dixon

This book argues that the pursuit of war and the further militarisation of British democracy since 9/11 has led the UK into a permanent state of war and made the nation particularly prone to military aggression rather than managing conflict through negotiation. Within NATO, Britain is among the most belligerent nations ratcheting up military expenditure and the use of violence to manage conflict. The militarisation of British (and Western) states and authoritarian values have been manufactured to provide domestic support for permanent war. Failure in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Ukraine and the Middle East has not reduced confidence in the use of military aggression as NATO seeks confrontation in a 'New Cold War' between 'democracy' and 'authoritarian' Russia and China. Paradoxically, Britain and the West's militarisation proposes to destroy democracy in order to save it, and to provide authoritarian states with the excuse to become more authoritarian.

“Performing the Northern Ireland Peace Process offers a nuanced and stimulating analysis which goes beyond standard explanations by exploring the motives and means used by those who made peace in Northern Ireland.” (Professor Timothy White, Xavier University, USA)“Paul Dixon has produced an impressive and challenging book. Dixon defends the Northern Ireland peace process as a carefully-crafted, drawn-out episode in realist, pragmatic politics. However, he pulls few punches in highlighting the moral deceptions which have kept the process in play. Provocatively, Dixon also challenges a wide range of academic interpretations of the processes and their associated political prescriptions. Thoughtful and well-researched throughout, Performing the Northern Ireland Peace Process is an essential read for anyone interested in conflict management.” (Professor Jon Tonge, University of Liverpool)“In this outstanding book, Dixon shows yet again the importance of the theatrical metaphor for Northern Ireland. More importantly still, he demonstrates that the adoption of a critically realist outlook actually enhances our capacity to think creatively about the political choices we face in international politics and the alternative policies and institutions we might construct.” (Professor Adrian Little, The University of Melbourne)This book is exceptional in defending the ‘dirty politics’ of the Northern Ireland peace process. Political actors in Britain, Ireland and the United States performed the peace process and used ‘political skills’, often including deception and hypocrisy, in order to wind down the conflict and achieve accommodation. These political skills, it is argued, are often morally justifiable even as they are popularly condemned. The Northern Ireland peace process has been highly successful in reducing violence and an accurate understanding of its politics is an important contribution to international debates about managing conflict.

The conflict in Northern Ireland since 1969 has cost over 3,600 lives and about 100,000 people in Northern Ireland live in a household where someone has been injured in a troubles-related incident. This has been a key issue in British and Irish politics and the recent peace process in Northern Ireland and the current War on Terrorism has stimulated international involvement and a desire to learn the lessons of the troubles. Although Northern Ireland has a population of just 1.5 million people it is one of the most researched territories of the world. There is considerable controversy over the interpretation of the history of Northern Ireland, not least since 1969. This new addition to the Seminar Studies in History Series provides a comprehensive introduction to the difficult topic, reviewing different perspectives on the recent history of the conflict in Northern Ireland while at the same time providing an authoritative overview. Each book in the Seminar Studies in History series provides a concise and reliable introduction to complex events and debates. Written by acknowledged experts and supported by extracts from historical Documents, a Chronology, Glossary, Whos Who of key figures and Guide to Further Reading, Seminar Studies in History are the essential guides to understanding a topic.
