The Concise Guide to Medical History Taking

The Concise Guide to Medical History Taking

This concise medical reference is designed to help medical students, doctors, nurses and physician's associates apply best practice to the taking of effective medical histories. It provides informative but succinct guidance for clinical professionals on how to capture and interpret a medical history from their patients. The approach presented is new and innovative, and based on expert medical opinion and in depth research with senior clinical leads from multiple medical and surgical specialities from the UK's leading virtual hospital. The Concise Guide to Medical History Taking makes use of the development of new patient-focussed medical history tools, where the essential elements of clinical history taking have been refined and improved in order to develop a meaningful and relevant way of taking a clinical history whilst avoiding much of the traditional filler content that is taught traditionally. The question sets are now more user friendly, discriminating and linked to the underlying set of differential diagnoses. This reflects an updated approach to clinical history taking, seeking tangible benefits, based on the evidence of what has been found to be most useful in real world clinical practice. With a foreword by Dr Richard Chudleigh, Consultant Physician & Diabetologist, Singleton Hospital, Associate Professor, Swansea University Medical School

Hamish McKenzie stood welded to the spot as fifty million volts coursed through his body. He was dead before he hit the ground. Dealanch was never wrong. Lightning stalks the first-born of three generations of the McKenzie clan from Scotland to Ottawa to Saskatchewan as each successive son looks over their shoulder knowing it was not a question of if, but when the paranormal would strike. Running from the inevitable - the McKenzie clan leaves Scotland for Canada, but can they outrun lightning?Astraphobia stalks three generations trying to escape the first-born curse. Editorial Review S. Peters Davis This book captured my attention at the Prologue - a historical incident happened in Nairn, Scotland, in 1889. The story takes off from there into the early 1900s to the 1970s, introducing generations of the McKenzie family and showing the details of the areas where they move to in Canada. Lightning strikes become a major reality, weaving through the years of this story. The characters were so pronounced in the life and times of this book that I felt like I stood right beside them, seeing, hearing, and feeling everything with stirring emotions. Impressive, and worth the read.

The Virtual Hospital

The Virtual Hospital

This book describes the current picture of healthcare and how medicine can develop in the 21st century to provide traditional hospital services differently with the use of clinical-digital transformation. Technological and social developments are enabling doctors, patients, tech developers, entrepreneurs and policy makers to recognise that care delivery can be achieved in novel and interesting ways far from the classic bricks and mortar approach. There are multiple triggers for change including the ageing population, limitations of existing clinical capacity and the COVID pandemic, accelerating the use of remote technologies, along with patient demands and expectations being higher than ever. With the speed of development of so many new technologies, it is hard to keep track of them, plus there is a need to scrutinize their claims and true potential for significant improvements in care delivery. The increasing global emphasis on the use of ‘virtual wards’, a way of remotely monitoring patients in their own homes and freeing up hospital beds, raises questions about the use of such systems of care and how they may be prone to safety failures and higher costs. The rush to use them needs to be balanced with the right level of evaluation and assurance. The Virtual Hospital explores the many approaches by which traditional medical practice is changing and the potential for new technologies (everything from biohacking to AI) to disrupt the existing paradigm. The goal is to assess and challenge whether the claims for such developments are robust and beneficial, rather than merely praising how shiny and clever the future looks. Consequently, this book is of enormous value to all involved in the provision of care, from physicians, nurses and healthcare planners to data scientists and healthcare leaders in all clinical settings.

From pioneering treatment developers, this book describes recovery-oriented cognitive therapy (CT-R). This evidence-based approach empowers people given a serious mental health diagnosis such as schizophrenia to build a better life in their chosen community. CT-R provides innovative strategies to help individuals shift from a "patient" mode to an adaptive mode of living and take positive steps to pursue valued aspirations. Vivid case vignettes and sample dialogues illustrate ways to access the adaptive mode with people experiencing negative symptoms, delusions, hallucinations, communication difficulties, self-harming or aggressive behavior, and other challenges. In a convenient large-size format, the book includes reproducible handouts and forms. Purchasers get access to a companion website where they can download and print the reproducible materials, plus two online-only tip sheets relevant to COVID-19 and telehealth, and find a link to related videos. See also Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Third Edition: Basics and Beyond, Judith S. Beck, the definitive CBT text, with new coverage of CT-R in the third edition.

Paul Grant and Laurie Dickson have combined social and natural history -- memorabilia, photographs, illustrations, maps, drawings, anecdotes and remembrances -- to reveal the many surprises tourists and hometown visitors can find in this thousand-acre sanctuary. From Easter Be-ins and Theatre Under the Stars to poet Pauline Johnson and lifeguard Joe Fortes, from wild wolves and miniature train rides to Skana the Killer Whale and the totem poles (which are the parks most visited spot), its all here in this lively, sometimes quirky compendium of the world-famous park that has been the green heart of Vancouver for over 100 years.
