Jarrow’s early history is associated with its medieval monastery, home of the Anglo-Saxon scholar Bede, but much of the town developed later during the Industrial Revolution, when coal mining and shipbuilding became the dominant industries in the area. The closure of Palmer’s shipyard in the 1930s dealt a serious blow to the town’s prosperity but by the start of the Second World War new industries opened in the town: a ship-breaking yard, an engineering works and a steelworks. The docks have been largely filled in after the last shipyard closed in the 1980s and the town has been redeveloped in recent decades. Jarrow Reflections features an exciting collection of historic and modern pictures that are individually merged to reveal how the area has changed over the decades. The 180 pictures in this book combine a recent colour view of Jarrow with the matching sepia archive scene. Through the split-image effect, readers can see how streets, buildings and everyday life have transformed with the passing of time. Professional photographer and local author Paul Perry presents this fascinating visual chronicle that reflects past and present glimpses of Jarrow.

The sixties, seventies and eighties were decades of great change. Many towns and cities were redeveloped with projects that dramatically affected the character of the place. People's shopping habits were altered as supermarkets took over from traditional stores and corner shops. Leisure habits were changing too, as cheap air travel led to the arrival of the foreign package holiday and a new range of leisure facilities were developed at home. Fashions, as ever, were changing in this period, reflecting radical changes in society and the ways in which we viewed ourselves. Transport also evolved, with a move away from the railway and buses, creating a strain on the roads, which led to new road schemes. These changes in people's habits and lifestyles were keenly felt in Jarrow, in the north-east of England, as the town’s traditional industries, particularly based around its shipyards, declined. The last shipyard closed in 1983 and much of the old dock area has been reclaimed for new industries but local author Paul Perry recaptures it all in this fascinating portrayal of the town and its people over the course of these most nostalgic decades.

The Garden is dying. Once an Edenic orchid farm, it has been decimated by the worst hurricane in Florida’s living memory. Its glasshouses are shattered, the surrounding mangroves encroach, and its men are dangerously idle. When Romeo – an expert breeder of the endangered ghost orchid – arrives from Honduras, boss Blanchard and his Irish lieutenant, Swallow, believe their fortunes are on the rise. Romeo may not be all he seems though, and Swallow can sense the newcomer shaking the Garden’s creaking hierarchy. The ghost orchid they seek is infamously rare, a delicate and wildly valuable species, hidden deep in the treacherous cypress swamps of the Fakahatchee Strand. To capture the ghost, Blanchard and Swallow must strike a deal with Logan, a dangerously unpredictable member of the local Seminole tribe, whose wounded pride, and simmering web of violence threaten to uproot any hope of success. As Blanchard’s obsession distracts him from what is truly precious, Swallow’s long-buried traumas will test his ability to stop lust, betrayal and death from engulfing the Garden. Paul Perry’s first solo novel tells of smothering power, loyalty and agency thwarted by the tragic patterns of memory and behaviour. The Garden is a modern fable, and a warning against trespassing upon nature in the name of profit.

The town of Jarrow in the north-east of England transformed in the nineteenth century when heavy industry, particularly coal mining and shipbuilding, began to dominate the town. At its peak 80 per cent of the town’s working population were employed in the shipbuilding industry until 1933 at the demise of the Palmer shipbuilding empire. From this time the town relied upon ship repair as the mainstay industry, up until the last ship repair yard closed in 1981. Although the docks continued for another decade, they have been largely filled in today, and new industries have been attracted to the area during the redevelopment of the town. In this book well-known local author and photographer Paul Perry presents a portrait of a town and a way of life that has radically changed over the decades, much of which has disappeared today, showing not only the industries and buildings that have gone but also the people, street scenes, many popular places of entertainment and much more. This fascinating photographic history of lost Jarrow will appeal to all those who live in the town or know it well, as well as those who remember it from previous decades.

Jarrow has a rich history going back well over a thousand years, but the town is best known for its long-term association with shipbuilding. Charles Mark Palmer established a shipyard – Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Company – in 1852 and became the first armour-plate manufacturer in the world. John Bowes, the first iron screw collier, revived the Tyne coal trade, and Palmers was responsible for building the first modern cargo ship as well as a number of notable warships. Palmers employed as much as 80 per cent of the town’s working population until its closure in 1933. Jarrow at Work explores the life of this Tyneside town and its people, from pre-industrial beginnings through to the present day, in a fascinating series of contemporary photographs and illustrations. It takes us through the phenomenal growth of the shipbuilding industry in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, its subsequent decline and brief revival during the First World War when the Royal Navy needed more ships, post-war nationalisation of the shipbuilding industry, the closure of the last shipyard in the town in 1981, and finally how the town is coping today with the loss of such a major part of its history.

Jarrow has a rich history that spans well over a thousand years. In the eighth century the monastery of Saint Paul was the home of the Venerable Bede, who is regarded as the greatest Anglo-Saxon scholar and the father of English history. Jarrow remained a small town until the introduction of heavy industries like coal mining and shipbuilding. Charles Mark Palmer established a shipyard – Palmer’s Shipbuilding and Iron Co. – in 1852 and became the first armour-plate manufacturer in the world. John Bowes, the first iron screw collier, revived the Tyne coal trade, and Palmer’s was also responsible for the first modern cargo ship, as well as a number of notable warships. In 1907 there was a terrific slump in shipbuilding; the whole of the industry was severely affected, but cracks were to appear in 1915 as the decline tightened its grip. It was the First World War that was to save Palmer’s from closure and revive the town’s fortunes and spirit, as the Royal Navy was greatly in need of ships to replace the war losses. Jarrow is marked in history as the starting point in 1936 of the Jarrow March to London to protest against unemployment in Britain. After 1945 the shipbuilding industries were nationalised. The last shipyard in Jarrow closed in 1981. Well-known local author and photographer Paul Perry takes the reader on a tour of this Tyneside town. Fully illustrated with pictures from the past, Jarrow From Old Photographs is sure to appeal to anyone who lives or works in the town.
