"Moonlight Leaning Against an Old Rail Fence" is a rich collection of dharma teachings arising from a lifetime of Buddhist practice. It uses poetic perception to illuminate the vast landscape of spiritual practice and realization, never becoming parochial in its presentation or one-sided in its language. The author reflects his broad range of concerns and inclusiveness of spiritual experience, language, and tradition. The voices of Zen and Dzogchen find an easy interchange with Taoist, Sufi, Christian, and indigenous perspectives, psychoanalysis, quantum physics, and neuroscience. This book comes out of a tradition in which spiritual exposition arises as commentary to an earlier poetic text. In this case, it is 48 poems, each very different, out of which the author teases a rich compendium of spiritual teachings that are both original and relevant to inform and encourage any reader's spiritual practice, comtemplation, and growth. Some are simple and ecstatic celebrations of luminous and transparent reality; some are technical expositions of subtle points of Buddhits teaching or meditation practice, some are reflections and support for everyday life; and some touch on vital issues of history, culture, and human development, from imperialism, fundamentalism, and human atrocity to narcissism, partriarchy, and addiction. All become threads in a challenging but warmly engaging exposition of dharma, continually weaving the personal and the academic, the relative and the universal, the ordinary and the mystical. While rarely using the terms, the author ultimately celebrates "bodhicitta, " the awake, compassionate ground of the universe, and the "prajnaparamita, " its paradoxical and inconceivable nature, which he calles the "Mother of Poetry." Combing technical clarity with lyrical, sometimes rapturous prose, "Moonlight Leaning Against an Old Rail Fence "points beyond our literal fixations with language, ideas, and doctrines to evoke the great ungraspable poetic reality that expresses in all our spirituality and in all our human experience.

The ideas in this book may be hazardous to your health. "When I feed hungry children, they call me a saint. When I ask, 'Why are children hungry,' they call me a communist." That's how Brazilian bishop Dom Helder Camara said it. Bringing change to the world is risky business. In Touching The Rainbow Ground visionary missionary and award-winning videographer Paul Weiss describes a journey in which he learned that his vision of feeding poor, hungry children alienated friends, family and, especially, those whose power and wealth maintain the system that keeps children hungry. The 8 Steps to Hope outlined in Touching The Rainbow Ground slowly became clear as he traveled from the affluence of his hometown of Santa Barbara to a leper colony in the Philippines to the Tijuana garbage dump and from the jungles of Guatemala to the ghettos of Washington, DC. Touching is a primer for students, ministers, teachers, and nonprofit staff on how to launch their dreams of creating a better world.

Defining an ""emphatic"" as an intrusion that alters the import of what it intrudes on, Weiss sets the stage for an exquisitely systematic, speculative study of the major themes confronting modern metaphysics.

Book jacket/back: 'Being and Other Realities,' by our greatest living metaphysician, pushes Paul Weiss's philosophy to new subtlety. It moves on two fronts. On one, it further refines the categorial scheme Weiss has been developing over 50 years. On the other, it is a shining example of radical questioning and exploration. This is an important book, especially for philosophers like myself, who believe being is not another reality." --Robert C. Born in 1901, Paul Weiss has made major contributions to several branches of philosophy, as well as to teaching and scholarly publishing. Alfred North Whitehead remarked: "The danger of philosophical teaching is that it may become dead-alive, but in Paul Weiss's presence that is impossible". Weiss is widely believed to be America's greatest living speculative metaphysician, but he has also made notable philosophical contributions to the discussion of sports, the arts, religion, logic, and politics. Professor Weiss has been highly productive: his Being and Other Realities (1995) was hailed as one of his most exciting books, and as this volume goes to press he is hard at work on yet another major treatise.

This self-contained treatise, originally published in 1947 by Holt, Rinehart and Winston, examines fundamental features of nature in order to lay the groundwork for providing a solution to the major problems of ethics. The guiding thread of this examination is the idea of freedom. The acknowledgement that this universal freedom, which illustrates the integration of man and his problems in the rest of nature, demonstrates how nature provides a place for man, the being who is at once natural and responsible.
