Real life stories can tell who you are, and where you are, and sometimes whether anyone else is like you. Here in Under the Plow, there's a lot you'll recognize about home and neighbours or family and gardening, in these real life stories by writer Paula Johanson. Look here for insights into city folk and country living, as when Paula writes of learning to be both a writer and a farmer, and how can anyone find their way in this part of the world. "Houses out here don't have numbers by the front doors. Houses out here don't even have stairs by the front door. Some of our neighbours don't even have front doors at all, just a place where a front door will be put some day. Our little white house is the only house out here where the front door gets used. It's the only door we have. But then we're odd. Our neighbours are sure we're odd because we use our front door and didn't use to have a phone." Under The Plow is a collection of Op-Ed columns written for a weekly rural newspaper in Sturgeon County, Alberta. Doublejoy Books is proud to release this book as the third title in the Slice of Life series. As a sequel to No Parent Is An Island and Working Parent, this book brings the family and writing stories into their prime. If you like the humour and storytelling of Hannah Gadsby, then Under The Plow will keep you reading. "Paula Johanson chronicles the adventure of parenthood with wry wit and ironic accuracy."- Jim Holland, editor, Island Parent magazine

Looking for real life stories? You'll find them here. Working Parent continues the adventures of two writers raising gifted twins, that began in the popular book No Parent Is An Island. On the farm or bouncing like ping-pong balls in Grandma's basement, this family is always busy. Author Paula Johanson has calluses from farming and from writing these stories and a stack of nonfiction books. As Paula writes: "After reading a review of notebook computers, I knew I wanted the portable qualities of a notebook. So I bought one. Spiral bound, five subject dividers and lined paper. I can even take it to the pool and write fiction or reviews while my kids take swimming lessons. It works. So do I." Doublejoy Books is pleased to present his book as a long-awaited sequel to No Parent Is An Island, by popular request. Working Parent is the second book in the series Slice of Life. The series goes on with Under The Plow, a collection of Johanson's popular op-ed columns for a rural newspaper. "Paula Johanson chronicles the adventure of parenthood with wry wit and ironic accuracy."- Jim Holland, editor, Island Parent magazine

This book on paddlesports details using kayaks and other small boats with an eye to environmental sensibility and affordable recreation. In Green Paddler, author Paula Johanson reprises her short articles from Kayak Yak website and brings new insights & humour to the time she spends on the water. "Superb What a fantastic read for a Monday morning." -Pearly on AdvancedElements kayaking forum As a teenager, Paula learned kayaking and canoeing. After a sudden hearing loss took her sense of balance, she returned to paddling for fitness and vestibular improvement. Finding a calming oasis of nature in cities is a bonus Whether she's at home on a west coast island or travelling in Canada to promote her writing, her kayaks make it possible for this stocky little woman to haul her own gear so she can paddle in harbours, lakes, and rivers. Though she doesn't own a car or a couch, her "Affordable Fleet" of kayaks includes folding inflatable kayaks from AdvancedElements, as well as wheels for a Necky Eliza sea kayak and an old Pamlico to loan to beginners. "With the finely-honed body of a freelance writer, I turn heads as I bring my inflatable kayaks on buses, trains, and airplanes, or wheel my sea kayak along a road," she says. "...but it's the kayaks that get all the attention." Doublejoy Books is thrilled to release this practical discussion of using small boats. The enjoyment of kayaking shows on every page as paddler Paula Johanson talks about how it feels to get out on the water, even when one is not a hard-body Olympian. Green Paddler is the author's forty-fourth nonfiction book, and her confidence is clear whether she welcomes the reader to paddlesports or environmental concerns. "Paula's experience as a professional writer shows when writing about her prime leisure time activity, kayaking. I find myself smiling at Paula's clever descriptions of the places that she's paddled and her humorous observations about the people around her. Paula's words paint a clear picture of the places she's paddling so I can imagine being there alongside her." - Justine Curgenven, award-winning adventure filmmaker and expedition kayaker "Great posts It makes me want to get out on the water." -Lakejumper on AdvancedElements kayaking forum

Working in wool to make traditional woven blankets and modern knitting has long been a primary cultural communication method of people in Cowichan First Nation, but published comments suggest non-Cowichan people have consistently failed to understand what was being communicated. An examination of the last 240 years of published comments on Cowichan woolworking shows themes of foreignness and co-operation emphasized throughout. In Woolgathering, author Paula Johanson presents examples of an ongoing commentary, not only on the fabric-making of the Cowichan people but on the idea of foreignness, in a particularly West Coast manifestation. This short monograph presents a discussion of published works on this kind of woolwork, from the ship's logs of Cook and Vancouver, through gunboat colonialism, to international fibre arts historians and Indigenous artists' statements. Discussions of Literature of the West Coast, or history, mean little without an understanding of experiences of people living in that place and time. Indigenous woolwork, both traditional weaving and modern knitting, is a technology well adapted for people's needs. These knitted and woven works, recognizable at a glance, identify both makers and wearers as people living in close association with this place and time. Paula Johanson is a Community Fellow in the Electronic Textual Cultures Lab at the University of Victoria, with a graduate certificate in Digital Humanities. She was a Community Fellow in UVic's Centre for Co-operative and Community-Based Economy, while completing her master's degree in Canadian literature. Her master's essay is the basis for the text of Woolgathering: Awareness of the Foreign in Published Works About Cowichan Woolworking.

They were stolen in the dark to work for a night and a day, building a tower for the wizard Krummholz on faraway Copper Island, in a place where the trees grow twisted in a poisoned bog. Some of the unwilling workers were returned bewildered, bruised, and marked by whips -- others died as the uncaring wizard called new workers to his tower. Now Jenia is the only one left of her family willing to leave her orchards and walk five hundred miles in search of her abductor, and the answers to questions burning inside her.Why was she stolen out of the dark? What is wrong at the heart of the tower? And why does the magic twisting the very trees strike a strangely familiar note? All Jenia knows for sure is that she will not let herself be made a prisoner again, not by magic nor by force of arms. When a soldier tries to trap her in a lord's garden, and a village of gentle people tell her to give up her hopeless quest, Jenia has to choose where to place her trust: in friends, in strength, or in the cunning in her own two hands. And then the wizard Krummholz sends his call out again... A wealth of realistic detail lends authenticity to this engrossing tale of a young arborist, "a scholar of trees." Paula Johanson has created a magical alternative world both mythic in feel, and hauntingly evocative of our own.- Eileen Kernaghan, author of The Snow Queen. Doublejoy Books is pleased to release the third edition of this short novel, previously released by Canadian publishers Bundoran Press and Five Rivers Publishing.
