This book assesses the dynamics, challenges and achievements of the development processes of three Portuguese-speaking Small Island Developing States (PSSIDS) - Cabo Verde, São Tome and Príncipe, and Timor-Leste. Important lessons are drawn from those processes, which are relevant for policymakers, as well as for their bilateral and multilateral development partners, including international organizations such as United Nations or the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. To that end, the book includes contributions to the academic literature about SIDS, an area of research that has been significantly overlooked. The conclusions would be of interest to readers as a lead up to the fiftieth anniversary of their independence.

Das Cerrado-Biom ist das zweitwichtigste in Brasilien, aber es gibt nur wenige Erkenntnisse ber seine Funktionsweise, insbesondere in Bezug auf den Kohlenstoffkreislauf im Vergleich zu landwirtschaftlichen Systemen. J ngste Forschungen haben gezeigt, wie wichtig der Bodenkohlenstoff als Lager, Quelle und potenzielle CO2-Senke ist. Heutzutage ist es von grundlegender Bedeutung, mit geringen Kohlenstoffemissionen zu produzieren, ohne die Grenzen der Landwirtschaft zu erweitern, insbesondere in gesch tzten Gebieten. Eine der gro en Herausforderungen der Landwirtschaft besteht darin, die Emission von Treibhausgasen (THG) zu verringern und die Aufnahme von Kohlenstoff in kosystemen zu erh hen.

The Cerrado biome is the second most important in Brazil, yet there is little understanding of its functioning, particularly in relation to the carbon cycle compared to agricultural systems. Recent research has shown the importance of soil carbon as a stock, source and potential CO2 sink. Nowadays, it is fundamental to produce with low carbon emission without expanding the agricultural frontier, especially in preserved areas. One of the great challenges of agricultural activity is to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) and increase the absorption of carbon in ecosystems.

Le biome du Cerrado est le deuxi me plus important au Br sil, mais son fonctionnement est mal connu, notamment en ce qui concerne le cycle du carbone par rapport aux syst mes agricoles. Des recherches r centes ont montr l'importance du carbone du sol en tant que stock, source et puits potentiel de CO2. De nos jours, il est fondamental de produire avec de faibles missions de carbone sans tendre la fronti re agricole, en particulier dans les zones pr serv es. L'un des grands d fis de l'activit agricole est de r duire les missions de gaz effet de serre (GES) et d'augmenter l'absorption du carbone dans les cosyst mes.

Il bioma del Cerrado il secondo pi importante del Brasile, ma la comprensione del suo funzionamento scarsa, soprattutto in relazione al ciclo del carbonio rispetto ai sistemi agricoli. Recenti ricerche hanno dimostrato l'importanza del carbonio nel suolo come stock, fonte e potenziale pozzo di CO2. Oggi fondamentale produrre a basse emissioni di carbonio senza espandere la frontiera agricola, soprattutto nelle aree preservate. Una delle grandi sfide dell'attivit agricola ridurre l'emissione di gas serra (GHG) e aumentare l'assorbimento di carbonio negli ecosistemi.
