The bibliographer and editor Henry Benjamin Wheatley (1838–1917) produced a prodigious number of books and articles on a wide range of topics, literary, historical, bibliographical and artistic. It is a three-volume topographical and historical dictionary of London places and landmarks, and the people who lived there. Based on historical, literary and architectural sources, it reveals many fascinating details as it traces the development of the metropolis from medieval times to the time of writing. Nineteenth-century London was experiencing rapid change, and this work preserves the memory of many buildings now lost.
