Few subjects in European welfare history attract as much attention as the nineteenth-century English and Welsh New Poor Law. Its founding statute was considered the single most important piece of social legislation ever enacted, and at the same time, the coming of its institutions – from penny-pinching Boards of Guardians to the dreaded workhouse – has generally been viewed as a catastrophe for ordinary working people. Until now it has been impossible to know how the poor themselves felt about the New Poor Law and its measures, how they negotiated its terms, and how their interactions with the local and national state shifted and changed across the nineteenth century. In Their Own Write exposes this hidden history. Based on an unparalleled collection of first-hand testimony – pauper letters and witness statements interwoven with letters to newspapers and correspondence from poor law officials and advocates – the book reveals lives marked by hardship, deprivation, bureaucratic intransigence, parsimonious officialdom, and sometimes institutional cruelty, while also challenging the dominant view that the poor were powerless and lacked agency in these interactions. The testimonies collected in these pages clearly demonstrate that both the poor and their advocates were adept at navigating the new bureaucracy, holding local and national officials to account, and influencing the outcomes of relief negotiations for themselves and their communities. Fascinating and compelling, the stories presented in In Their Own Write amount to nothing less than a new history of welfare from below.

Sculptor, painter, letter cutter, stained glass artist, novelist, and academic, Jonah Jones (1919-2004) was a twentieth-century renaissance man whose life is captured in this biography by his son Peter, with a foreword by his friend Jan Morris.Born near Newcastle into a family of miners, Jonah Jones first found his passion for art during the Second World War while serving with a number of other artists and craftsmen in the non-combatant Medical Corps. After the War, he fulfilled his dream of settling in Wales and began his 'on the job' education as a sculptor and letter cutter. Much of his early work was at Clough Williams-Ellis's Portmeirion village. The two became close friends and Jones widened his circle to include Richard Hughes, Bertrand Russell, John Cowper Powys and Huw Weldon. In a varied career Jonah Jones produced intimate sculptures, monumental installations, and beautiful inscriptions, in addition to writing several novels, a biography of Clough Williams-Ellis and a well-regarded survey of the lakes of north Wales. His was a productive life which spanned much of the twentieth century, a century of 'isms' (including pacifism and Catholicism) which marked his character and work. This book is a remarkable portrait of both an artist and of art in the twentieth century."... proud, humorous, affable, patriotically Welsh, and deeply committed to his humanitarian ideals and a belief in the transforming power of art..."The GuardianPeter Jones is the son of Jonah Jones and worked with him in his studio for a number of years; latterly he was a journalist for BBC Monitoring.
Self-Help from the Middle Ages: What the Seven Deadly Sins Can Teach Us about Living
From medieval historian Peter Jones comes a groundbreaking guide to navigating contemporary life through the wisdom of the Seven Deadly Sins. Watching the snow from his apartment window in Siberia, Peter Jones could only describe his feeling as coldness-- both physically and emotionally. He knew modern psychology would define his malaise as depression, but as a professor of medieval history, he also knew there was a time when people described these struggles in very different terms. He turned to the Middle Ages, what he calls the "golden age of self-help," and discovered the timeless wisdom of the Seven Deadly Sins. In The Seven Deadly Sins, Jones takes us with him on a captivating journey through medieval history, revealing how the past can illuminate and transform our modern lives. He explores each of the Seven Deadly Sins--Pride, Envy, Anger, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, and Lust--demonstrating how these ancient concepts can serve as a powerful framework for understanding our own psychological and emotional struggles. He delves into the lives of historical figures, from saints and scholars to kings and commoners, uncovering the rich tapestry of medieval thought that sought to navigate the complexities of the human mind. Jones offers a fresh and gripping exploration of European ideas, making a compelling case for its enduring relevance in our quest for self-awareness and personal growth. It turns out that the Seven Deadly Sins was never about purging our temptations and vices, it was about identifying them, accommodating them, and learning to recognize our human essence in the process. Through vivid storytelling and meticulous research, The Seven Deadly Sins invites readers to rediscover a lost map of the mind and harness its power to confront the challenges of contemporary life.

'Jones has an eagle's high eye for the history of Rome' The Times 'Jones makes the classical world feel both beguiling and fresh' Sunday TimesYou may think about the Roman Empire every day, but I bet you rarely think about the plebs. The plebs were the commoners, the general populace and lower social classes, and as such their feelings, thoughts and voices are seldom captured in the sources. Most books about Ancient Rome treat the plebs as irrelevant 'lowlifes', which is indeed how they were viewed by the patricians at the centre of the existing popular histories.Plebs Romana is the first history of Ancient Rome to centre the class of people who made up the empire's majority. A 700-year story that begins with the founding of the Roman Republic, celebrated historian Peter Jones traces the rise of the plebs, from being a powerless group to a political match for the 'patrician' elite. Along the way we learn how they conducted the world's first general strike, became the driving force of Rome's rise to power, and that it was the increasing class conflict between the rich and the poor, rather than the rise of Christianity, that destroyed the world's most powerful and consequential empire.

Donald Fagen will forever be associated with Steely Dan, the band he formed with Walter Becker and four other musicians in 1972.The smooth, radio-friendly veneer of the duo’s songs made Steely Dan internationally popular and famous in the 1970s, but the polish glossed over the underlying layers of anger, disappointment, sleaze, and often downright weirdness lurking just beneath the surface. The elliptical lyrics were - and continue to be - an endless source of fascination. What kind of person was capable of writing such songs?Fagen has always kept his true self hidden behind walls of irony, confounding most journalistic enquiries with a mixture of obscurity and sarcasm. Nightfly cracks open the door to reveal the life behind the lyrics and traces Fagen’s story from early family life in suburban New Jersey, to his first encounter with Walter Becker at Bard College, their long struggle for recognition as songwriters, and the formation of Steely Dan. The band’s break-up in 1981, re-formation in 1993, and Fagen’s parallel solo career are covered in detail.Author Peter Jones seeks to explain the public’s continuing fascination with Fagen’s music, both in collaboration with Becker and as a solo artist.

This book deploys a long-term account of political corruption in Britain to explain the phenomenon of corruption as it resides within the state and the contemporary problem of corruption denial among members of the political class. It aims to satisfy the concern about corruption and identify potential causes and significance. The book provides and account of definitions of corruption and how those definitions have changed over time. Throughout the succeeding chapters it discusses public life and how ethical considerations for public office holders have evolved over time. This book argues that corruption is not just a concern about politics and understanding corruption requires a multi-disciplinary approach: history; political science; sociology; anthropology and urban ethnography.

This 250-page book reveals the inside story of a motojournalist's life in the USA motorcycle industry. The book was created to be irreverent entertainment for motorcycle enthusiasts, not to even scores, vent anger, or be hard-hitting muckraking journalism. In this book, no names are mentioned, brands identified, or world problems solved. The 30 Collected Columns in this volume first appeared, in slightly different forms, in SportRider Magazine, American Roadracing Magazine, Motorcycle Street & Strip, Speed.com, and Motorcyclist. The 19 Untold Tales of Bad Behavior are original to this book. This is the first published collection of moto-writings by Peter Jones, a familiar voice to many motorcycle enthusiasts due to his 20-plus years of motorcycle reviews, columns and lifestyle editorials in numerous periodicals.
