Natural Quiet and Natural Darkness

Natural Quiet and Natural Darkness

University Press of New England

Excess noise and light challenge the ecological integrity of the natural environment, along with our enjoyment of the natural world. Although a substantive body of scientific and professional literature on quiet and darkness in national parks and related areas has developed over the past two decades, such work has been widely scattered over academic and professional journals in several environmental fields. This anthology brings together both new and previously published work on the topic. An introduction outlines the evolution of current thought about what constitutes national park resources and suggests a series of conceptual frameworks to inform management of natural quiet and natural darkness. Individual chapters address the biological, ecological, and experiential components of both of these valuable resources. A final chapter develops a series of principles or best practices for studying, managing, and protecting natural quiet and natural darkness in the national parks and related reserves.

This important book sheds light on the opportunities and complexities involved in the transition to net zero cities. Drawing on the framework of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Peter Newman outlines how cities can achieve net zero and sustainability agendas together as part of the global shift to a new economy.Newman examines key strategies for developing net zero cities, showing that core technologies of renewable energy, batteries and electric vehicles are commercially available but that how best to integrate them into different parts of cities is now the urban practitioner’s role. He explores projects that are demonstrating net zero with sustainability outcomes and even net positive with regenerative urbanism, highlighting the challenges of integrating new techniques into existing systems rapidly and at scale. Analysing theories of creative destruction, urban fabrics and structural change alongside detailed case studies, the book reflects on the history of turbulent change, ultimately demonstrating that there is hope of reaching full net zero by 2050, with plans for subsequent global cooling.Net Zero Cities with Sustainability is an invaluable resource for urban professionals and practitioners in a range of disciplines, including energy, environment, planning, design, business and economic development. Its insights will also benefit students and scholars of sustainability, geography, public policy, town planning and transport.

Revising Smart Cities with Regenerative Design

Revising Smart Cities with Regenerative Design

Zaheer Allam; Peter Newman

Springer International Publishing AG
2024
nidottu
This book presents a road map to urban regeneration through the contemporary concept of smart cities. It investigates why the concept has gained adoption as it has but until now it has been geared towards a profit-making venture by large corporations and ignoring the economic aspirations of smaller companies and city councils. The technologies can provide enhanced liveability levels if the concept is redefined. This work will be of interest to academics and policy makers looking at exploring how to drive urban regeneration in a sustainable and inclusive fashion while supporting local economies. It presents a case study of Port Louis, Mauritius, with unique insights and data. Academics, policy makers and urban developers could potentially adopt the model and calibrate it to various cities and quantify the economic and social benefits.

Planetary Accounting

Springer Verlag, Singapore

This book presents a novel way to enable people, regardless of their scale of influence, to take responsibility for global environmental problems including climate change. It introduces a new framework called Planetary Accounting, which allows the Planetary Boundaries, non-negotiable limits for the environment, to be translated into limits for human activity. It shows how such limits can be broken down into chunks that can be managed at different levels (from individual and community, to business and sector levels, to cities and regions), and at any level of government. The book begins by summarising the science of climate change and introducing the notion of the Anthropocene – the “human age”. It highlights the importance of returning to and remaining within the Planetary Boundaries but shows that we can’t realistically do so unless we have a new approach to environmental accounting. The book then outlines how Planetary Accounting furnishes this new approach by combining sustainability science, change theory, and environmental accounting to create a scalable framework for environmental management that encourages systemic and individual change. The details of the science of and our human contribution to ten critical human pressures are then presented, and the book concludes with a guide for those seeking to apply Planetary Accounting in practice. Planetary Accounting could form the scientific underpinning of behaviour change programs, guide the development of policy and regulations, and provide both the basis for environmental laws, and the foundation of future global environmental agreements. It has been 50 years since the first views from space showed a blue planet alone in our solar system. This book is an historic opportunity to provide humanity for the first time with sufficient information to begin implementing Planetary Accounting.

Cities as International Actors

Cities as International Actors

Tassilo Herrschel; Peter Newman

Palgrave Macmillan
2020
nidottu
This book explores the growing role of cities and regions as sub-national actors in shaping global governance. Far from being merely carried along by global forces, cities have become active players in making and maintaining the networks and connections that give shape to contemporary globalization. Exploring examples from Europe, North America and beyond, the authors reconcile the two separate, yet complimentary, theoretical and analytical lenses adopted by Urban Studies and International Relations, as they address the nature of ‘cities’ and ‘internationality’. The authors challenge academic debate that is reluctant to cross disciplinary boundaries and thus offer more relevant answers to the new phenomenon of international city action, and how it weakens the traditional prerogative of the state as primary actor in the international realm. Conclusions focus on how this new internationality opens opportunities for cities and regions but also contains potential pitfalls that can constrain policy options and challenge the legitimacy of policy making at all scales.

Unveiling the Bride: The New Covenant Church

Unveiling the Bride: The New Covenant Church

Peter Newman

The "bride of Christ" may best describe the divine relationship God desires the church to have with His Son. Yet our present day church has fallen far short of fulfilling God's desire to obtain a holy and blameless bride for His Son. Most Christians attending church today are hopelessly entangled in sinful habits, which means they either do not know Christ or they are not abiding in Christ. This certainly is not the church that God envisioned and that His Son gave His life for. This book reviews church history and reveals the purity and power of the church is directly related to the purity and power of the gospel that is preached and practiced. A prime example of this connection is the Protestant Reformation, which only restored half of the gospel. In practice, the Reformation restored the gospel of how "the righteous are saved by faith," but never restored the whole gospel of how "the righteous will live by faith." The result is most Christians do not know how to overcome sin and live by faith in Jesus Christ who indwells them by His Spirit. Yet this is the central purpose of Christ's death on the cross and the cornerstone of the New Covenant church. In addition to diagnosing the crux of the problem facing today's church, this book presents the remedy - a model of how the New Covenant church would work based on the complete gospel of Christ and Scriptural teaching on church life.
