Wolfgang Tillmans: A Reader

Wolfgang Tillmans: A Reader

"Wolfgang Tillmans is not only a great artist, he's a joyous intellectual whose generosity, wit and good-natured skepticism is political, authentic and playfully profound." -John WatersThis volume offers a panoramic collection of interviews and writings from an artist for whom language has always been a significant means of creative expression. Arranged chronologically, the assembled texts reflect Tillmans' thinking on photography, music, politics, nightlife, astronomy, spirituality and activism. The sources are as varied as their content, with statements and conversations that originally appeared in exhibition catalogues rubbing up against social-media posts and song lyrics. Whether discussing his own work as a photographer or drawing out the thoughts of others, Tillmans is a generous interlocutor with a refreshing clarity of thought. This visually rich and timely publication tracks Tillmans' contributions to art and cultural criticism in tandem with the social and cultural shifts of the past 30 years. Wolfgang Tillmans (born 1968) is among the most influential contemporary artists, and the impact of his work registers across the arts, intersecting with fashion, music, architecture, the performing arts, and activism. Known for his genre-defying practice and ongoing investigation into the photographic medium, Tillmans is the recipient of the Turner Prize (2000) and the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography (2015). His foundation, Between Bridges, supports the advancement of democracy, international understanding, the arts and LGBTQ rights. "Wolfgang Tillmans is not only a great artist, he's a joyous intellectual whose generosity, wit and good-natured skepticism is political, authentic and playfully profound. Read this volume and marvel at his highbrow yet unpretentious theories on abstraction combined with a low-level appreciation of the down and dirty. Thrill to Wolfgang's magically elitist yet of-the-people reinvention of 'real' photography and weep at the beauty of his love for the 'unforeseen.' Can printed museum art-talk be so smart that it becomes sexually arousing for the reader? Sure it can. And this is just the book to prove that." -John Waters "For over 30 years, Wolfgang Tillmans has been surveying culture and politics, as attentive to the production of news as he is to the radical intimacies of the nightclub or protest. Through his lens the world recovers its complexity. In an era of dangerous simplifications, we need his work more than ever." -Olivia Laing
Becoming Worthy: A Memoir

Becoming Worthy: A Memoir

James Worthy; Phil Taylor

From hall-of-fame NBA legend James Worthy, a searing, intimate memoir that tells the story of a man at home on the court but unsure of his place in the world, who played alongside all-time greats like Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, but privately struggled with self-worth and mental health; offering both an exhilarating glimpse into basketball's golden age and a reflection on how athletes are objectified but not taught, criticized but not mentored, and unprepared for the challenges of fame. James Worthy is one of the best players in basketball history. He was a star in the sport's golden age, first for one of the NCAA's storied teams, then for the NBA's flashiest. For the Los Angeles Lakers of the 1980s and early 1990s, he was the go-to guy in clutch situations; they called him Big Game James. And yet, he was the quiet man in that crowd. He wasn't a charming showboat like Magic Johnson, nor an enigmatic philosopher like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He was a soft-spoken man from rural North Carolina, at home on the court but unsure of his place in that chaotic and glamorous moment. He didn't know how to ask for help with finances or the media or his wavering sense of self-worth. Though it's hard to imagine a 6-foot-9-inch world-class athlete disappearing from view, James Ager Worthy didn't yet know his own voice. After years of reckoning with his past and investing in the future by way of raising his two daughters, he knows it now. In his memoir, Becoming Worthy, James Worthy tells his story for the first time. This is a basketball story. James was recruited by North Carolina coach Dean Smith, led the Tarheels to the 1982 championship, became the number one pick in the NBA draft, won three NBA championships, and is now revered as one of the top players in the league's history. He played alongside Michael Jordan in college, played against Larry Bird and Charles Barkley in the NBA, and worked with Lakers players after his retirement--including Kobe Bryant, who summoned James to the gym on a Sunday night because he needed to master a piece of Worthy footwork. This is a story of fathers and sons--or in this case, the story of a son haunted by his father's brooding silence and the void it created in his heart. It wasn't until Smith took him under his wing at UNC that James even grasped what a father could be, and it has taken him a lifetime to come to terms with what he didn't have with his own dad, and what he needs to bring to his relationships with his daughters. This is a story of public celebrity and private struggle. From his presence on the court to his surprising cameos (including as a tall Klingon in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation), James was on the scene. But in a moment that haunts him to this day, he was arrested for soliciting prostitution in 1990, an event that reveals how lost he felt at the height of his fame, and which he writes about with searing candor. Giving the rare fresh glimpse of basketball's golden age, Becoming Worthy will draw hoops fans who watched The Last Dance and Winning Time and those who read Scottie Pippen's Unguarded, West by West by Jerry West, and The Sixth Man by Andre Iguodala. An inspiring, intimate, and heartfelt story for basketball fans and anyone who has struggled to find themself.

In 2009, cabin crew in the BASSA union embarked on a historic, two-year battle against British Airways which was seeking to impose reduced crew levels and to transform working conditions. In the face of employer hostility, legal obstruction, government opposition and adverse media coverage, this workforce, diverse in terms of gender, sexuality, race and nationality undertook determined resistance against this offensive. Notably, their action included twenty-two days of strike action that saw mass participation in rallies and on picket lines. The dispute cost British Airways 150 million in lost revenue and its main outcome was the cabin crew's successful defence of their union and core conditions. Here, in their own words, Cabin Crew Conflict tells the strikers' story, focusing on cabin crew responses, perceptions of events, and their lived experiences of taking industrial action in a hostile climate. Foregrounding questions of class, gender and identity, and how these were manifest in the course of the dispute, the authors highlight the strike's significance for contemporary employment relations in and beyond the aviation industry. Lively and insightful, Cabin Crew Conflict explores the organisational and ideological role of the trade union, and shows how a 'non-traditional' workforce can organise and take effective action.

There have been many great books written on the need for biblically qualified elders in the church. They do an excellent job unpacking the pertinent scriptures and theology to explain both why we need elders and what they should look like, act like, smell like, etc. once we actually have them. This is not one of those books. Rather, "Eldership Development-From Application to Affirmation" seeks to show you the actual process that one church uses to develop their elders over a two year period. Think of it like a case-study. You'll see the prerequisites and the application that potential elders fill out, and even the questions asked during the interviews. You'll get an in-depth look at the two-year process, all the way to the final moment when you affirm the new elder on stage in a gathering. Along the way, the author stops to explain from experience why he made the decisions he made on everything from book assignments to awkward questions in an application. After you've read the books that tell you why you need church elders and what the Bible teaches, consult this book to build your own Eldership Development program at your local church. This field tested guide is meant to save you time and energy as you train up your church elders.Contents include: IntroductionStep One: Surfacing Potential EldersStep Two: The Prerequisites to Entering theEldership Development ProcessStep Three: The Application and Post Application MeetingStep Four: Year One of the Elder Development CollectiveStep Five: Year Two of the Elder Development CollectiveStep Six: The Post Development Process Check-In FormStep Seven: The Final Meeting Before the Public AffirmationStep Eight: Public AffirmationConclusionAppendix 1: Our Covenant Partnership AgreementAppendix 2: Our Elders/Pastors CovenantAppendix 3: Our Experiment with the Elder Teams ModelAppendix 4: How to Get Everything You See Here in a Word FileBibliography and Resources on Biblical EldershipAbout the Backstage Pastors Series: The Backstage Pastors series of books have been designed to target specific topics with enough depth to provide meaningful direction but with a brevity that facilitates reading or skimming quickly. Phil 'The Power' Taylor is the uncontested king of darts, his sixteen world championship titles between 1990 and 2013 far outclassing anything else the game has seen.He started out as a protégé of Eric Bristow, the Crafty Cockney, having wandered into his Burslem pub with a set of darts his wife had given him for his birthday. At that time Taylor was earning £52 a week working in a ceramics factory and hardly played. But jaws dropped and pint mugs tipped over as this newcomer suddenly unleashed a gift for flight that had soon eclipsed even the Crafty Cockney himself, and amassed Phil a haul of over 200 professional tournament victories.Staying Power is a year in the life of a legend, twice nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the Year, a man who made darts look a doddle to British pub-goers everywhere and set his seal on the game as the bloke to beat. A year of triumph and disaster, in which Taylor crashed out of the world championship in the second round to young outsider Michael Smith and fell asleep at home on Christmas day, exhausted from the strain of constant winning. A year when he played arguably the greatest ever game of darts, in the Grand Slam semi-final against recent world champion Adrian Lewis the two slugging it out to the wire. A year in which Taylor rocked Australia, fêted like royalty. A year of spats and hecklers, clashes on stage and off, of head-to-heads with the Dutch superstar Michael van Gerwen. But most of all this is a year in which Phil Taylor, one of sport's greatest champions, has looked hard at his life in his determination to stay in power.

‘The Power’ is back. King of the oche and a legend in the game, Phil Taylor is largely responsible for taking darts into the 21st century. Recently crowned world champion for an unprecedented eleventh time, Taylor is a complete one-off – the Tiger Woods of his sport – and the most phenomenal player ever to throw a dart. Brought up in the back streets of the Potteries, where his Dad tried to turn him into a boxer, Taylor's first job saw him earning £75 a week in a factory making ceramic toilet handles – and by the age of 25 he had hardly thrown a dart in anger. Then he attended an Eric Bristow darts exhibition, and the 'Crafty Cockney' became his mentor and friend and loaned him £10,000 to play the pro circuit. Within five years Taylor had won the first of his eleven world titles … In his book, Taylor describes how Bristow coaxed, bullied, humiliated and often literally punched him into making it as a pro. He is candid about the booze culture of the game, while revisiting the memorable matches and recalling vivid stories featuring the likes of Bristow, Cliff Lazarenko (who once had 20 cans of lager before a match), John Lowe and the legendary Jocky Wilson. A dispute between the professional players and the British Darts Organisation in 1992 almost led to a dispirited Taylor giving up the game for good. And he retraces the worst six months of his life, during which time he was convicted of sexually assaulting two female fans and had his MBE rescinded. The pain for his family was hard to bear. This is a story of a man having to come to terms with unparalleled success in his professional life after a career setback that would have destroyed many others; a unique sportsman whose steely-eyed determination won him an unprecedented eleventh world title in 2004 in what many observers described as the best professional darts match in living memory.
