Philip Ursprung

This innovative study of two of the most important artists of the twentieth century links the art practices of Allan Kaprow and Robert Smithson in their attempts to test the limits of art - both what it is and where it is. Ursprung provides a sophisticated yet accessible analysis, placing the two artists firmly in the art world of the 1960s as well as in the art historical discourse of the following decades. Although their practices were quite different, they both extended the studio and gallery into desert landscapes, abandoned warehouses, industrial sites, train stations, and other spaces. Ursprung bolsters his argument with substantial archival research and sociological and economic models of expansion and limits.

This book is a faithful reflection on the spirit and working modes infusing Josep Lluis Mateo's lively architectural practice. Unquestionably one of Spain's most renowned architects, Mateo's work has had enormous influence on the international architecture scene. His projects in Paris, The Hague and Amsterdam, as well as newer designs in Haarlem, Basel and Castelo Banco, are all analyzed in depth in this volume. Josep Lluis Mateo: Works, Projects, Writings includes a photographic essay on the International Convention Centre in Barcelona--one of Mateo's most authoritative projects of recent years. In addition there is an extensive study by Jose Luis Pardo and an interview by Philip Ursprung. Lluis Mateo has a studio in Barcelona and teaches at the ETH in Zrich, where he is Professor of Architecture and Design.

Having represented Beuys, Richter and Polke with his gallery and having curated eminent exhibitions and biennials, Rene Block ranks among the central figures of the neo-avant-garde. This publication brings together writings by and interviews with Block, which usually came about on the occasion of exhibition projects.

Jacques Herzog and Jeff Wall are among art and architecture’s most successful representatives, and Herzog & de Meuron’s architecture in the art domain (e.g. Tate Modern, London) has, since the 70s, attracted particular attention. Wall, for his part, has repeatedly in his motifs sought dialogue with architecture. His photography of Herzog & de Meuron’s "Dominus Winery" (1999) in California represents the point of departure for a discussion on the relationship between art and photography. Questions arise as a result on topics such as 'photogenic architecture', the construction of pictures and buildings, and the time factor.
