Redefining Journalism in an Age of Technological Advancements, Changing Demographics, and Social Issues
As audiences are provided opportunities to "feel" the news through new technological advancements in the field, the very nature of journalism is changing. These advancements in journalism have provided a way to reach and connect with unique communities in innovative and inclusive ways. As in-world journalists have sought to inform and engage unique communities within the context of their worlds, real and virtual, issues relevant to the mainstream have been played out in virtual culture. Redefining Journalism in an Age of Technological Advancements, Changing Demographics, and Social Issues investigates the impact of emerging technologies in journalism and how audiences engage with these technologies and news content in innovative ways. Identity and community are analyzed historically and culturally within the larger body of cultural and media studies. Covering topics such as audience demographics, robotics, and immersive journalism, this book is a dynamic resource for journalists, sociologists, politicians, students and educators of higher education, computer scientists, communications professionals, researchers, and academicians.

Unlike traditional animation techniques that use specialized 3D animation software, machinima--a term derived from the words "machine" and "cinema"--records the action in real-time interactive 3D environments, such as those found in video games, to create a cinematic production. No longer solely the province of hard-core gamers, machinima has become central to the convergence between animation, television, and film, but retains its own identity as a unique media format. It has evolved quickly within massive multi-player gaming and virtual platforms such as Second Life, The Sims, World of Warcraft, and virtual worlds under development. These interviews, essays, and discussions with leading machinima producers, reviewers, performers, and advocates discuss scripting basics, character development, and set design, as well as tips on crafting machinima through creative use of sound, lighting, and post-production.

This user content–driven platform has brought media makers and audiences together in interactive environments where news, entertainment, and art have become programming for virtual media networks with implications for traditional mainstream programming and distribution. New media moguls are emerging from Second Life and expanding to the larger Metaverse. This book explores media’s role in reporting and reflecting the social, political, and economic issues within Second Life and beyond, and includes more than a dozen interviews of active Second Life residents.

As the only independently Black-owned radio station in South Central Los Angeles, KJLH-FM was thrust into the media spotlight in the aftermath of the Rodney King trial. During the ensuing riots, KJLH introduced the world to South Central Los Angeles as only those who lived and worked there could. Owned by musician Stevie Wonder since 1979, the station upheld his legacy of community commitment, earning a Peabody Award along the way. This book explores the social, political, and economic impact of KJLH, drawing heavily upon more than 200 pages of interviews and program transcripts from the 1992 radio coverage.
