A History of India's Green Revolution

A History of India's Green Revolution

Prakash Kumar

In the mid-1960s, India's 'green revolution' saw the embrace of more productive agricultural practices and high yielding variety seeds, bringing the country out of food scarcity. Although lauded as a success of the Cold War fight against hunger, the green revolution has also faced criticisms for causing ecological degradation and socio-economic inequality. This book contextualizes the 'green revolution' to show the contingencies and pitfalls of agrarian transformation. Prakash Kumar unpacks its contested history, tracing agricultural modernization in India from colonial-era crop development, to land and tenure reforms, community development, and the expansion of arable lands. He also examines the involvement of the colonial state, post-colonial elites, and American modernizers. Over time, all of these efforts came under the spell of technocracy, an unyielding belief in the power of technology to solve social and economic underdevelopment which, Kumar argues, best explains what caused the green revolution.

The report describes the creation of the medical assistant Chatbot, which aims at transforming medical assistance by merging conversational AI with image-based disease detection and live data service. He was given a website to develop using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, MongoDB, Python, and Flask. MediBot is a one-stop platform providing accurate disease information, treatment options, and symptom analysis. MediBot is a digital smart healthcare assistant developed to give quick-accurate medical support, with its core features: Disease Checker and Symptoms Analyzer. The Disease Checker accepts the user input of the name of the disease, after which instant delivery of in-depth information such as the causes, symptoms, and general treatment guidelines, is done. On the other hand, the Symptoms Analyser intelligently matches a list of symptoms, provided by the user, to likely diseases using a trained model and curated medical data.

Congestion management is one of the most important issues for secure and reliable system operations in deregulated electricity market. This work presents an optimization approach for optimal allocation and optimal sizing of Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) or Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) in deregulated electricity market to reduce congestion. The proposed optimization technique has been used with an objective to minimize overall operating cost, maximize social welfare by placing TCSC or UPFC in a suitable location. In order to reduce the solution space two effective Indices (Marginal Congestion Index (MCI) and Active Power Spot Price Index (APSPI)) are employed for optimal placement of TCSC or UPFC. Once the location of TCSC or UPFC is identified, the optimal parameters of TCSC or UPFC are also determined. The proposed approach is carried out on modified IEEE 14-bus and IEEE 118-bus test systems and the results are presented to validate the approach.

Structure and Tectonics of the Indian Continental Crust and Its Adjoining Region: Deep Seismic Studies, Second Edition, collates essential data from seismic studies of Earth’s crust across India, offering an essential understanding of the tectonic development of the Indian subcontinent. Seismic studies have been carried out in various parts of India since 1972, recording crust-related seismic data for determination of velocity-depth configuration and determination of structural patterns. The book examines the details of these studies, including their synthesis and global applications. The book presents both background and applications in one cohesive volume for researchers and students of geophysics and geology.
Nutrient Deficiencies of Field Crops

Nutrient Deficiencies of Field Crops

Nutrient imbalance in soils is an emerging threat to sustainable agriculture: intensive cultivation, use of poor quality groundwater, depletion of soil organic matter and excessive use of fertilizers are major reasons for poor soil fertility worldwide. This necessitates correct diagnosis of plant nutrient deficiencies to avoid further use of pesticides in cases where pests or pathogens that are not in fact the cause of poor crop health. Richly illustrated with 600 colour photographs, this book is a visual field identification guide for symptoms of most common nutrient deficiencies in field crops, covering all their stages of occurrence. Detailed descriptions and suggested for management practices are given with each entry.
Indigo Plantations and Science in Colonial India

Indigo Plantations and Science in Colonial India

Prakash Kumar

Cambridge University Press

Prakash Kumar documents the history of agricultural indigo, exploring the effects of nineteenth-century globalisation on this colonial industry. Charting the indigo culture from the early modern period to the twentieth century, Kumar discusses how knowledge of indigo culture thrived among peasant traditions on the Indian subcontinent in the early modern period and was then developed by Caribbean planters and French naturalists who codified this knowledge into widely disseminated texts. European planters who settled in Bengal with the establishment of British rule in the late eighteenth century drew on this information. From the nineteenth century, indigo culture became more modern, science-based and expert driven, and with the advent of a cheaper, purer synthetic indigo in 1897, indigo science crossed paths with the colonial state's effort to develop a science for agricultural development. Only at the end of the First World War, when the industrial use of synthetic indigo for textile dyeing and printing became almost universal, did the indigo industry's optimism fade away.
