A maioria dos programas de rastreio do cancro oral inclui a simples inspec o visual. Em caso de les es assintom ticas, o paciente pode ser alertado pelo dentista durante uma visita de rotina. Isto pode estar numa fase muito avan ada da progress o do cancro. Portanto, h uma necessidade urgente de desenvolver marcadores tumorais para identificar indiv duos de alto risco.
