सर्वप्रथम यह स्पष्ट कर देना आवश्यक है कि मैं कोई कवि नहीं हूँ। अंग्रेज़ी और हिन्दी साहित्य के साथ तमाम अन्य भाषाओं के कवियों को पढ़ने के बाद मेरे लिए अब यह एक अत्यंत ही कठिन कार्य हो गया है कि मैं स्वयं को किस कोटि के अंतर्गत रखूं। साधारण भाषा में तो कविता लिखने वाले प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को कवि की संज्ञा दी जाती है मगर मेरे लिए यह एक बड़ा ही बेबूझ तथ्य है कि लिखने की विधा से लेकर लेखक के अंतर्मन तक सब कुछ इतना भिन्न और विस्तीर्ण होता है कि उसे एक नाम से नवाज़ा जाना शायद कवियों की निर्वैयक्तिकता के साथ अन्याय करना है। परन्तु दूसरा उपक्रम भी उतना ही दुरूह प्रतीत होता है जितना कि पहला । अब प्रत्येक कवि की निजता के लिए भी तो एक नए नाम का सम्बोधन नहीं खोजा जा सकता है। जो भी हो, एक बात तो यहाँ पर स्पष्ट है कि पूर्व में शायद किसी भी कवि ने कभी इस बात पर आपत्ति नहीं जताई है कि उन्हें कवि क्यूँ कहा जाता है। शायद उन्हें कवि कहलाना पसन्द रहा होगा या शायद कवियों की श्रेणी में खड़े होना उन्हें प्रीतिकर लगता रहा होगा।
