He began by breaking things that morning. He broke the glass of water on his night stand. He knocked it crazily against the opposite wall and shattered it. Yet it shattered slowly. This would have surprised him if he had been fully awake, for he had only reached out sleepily for it. Nor had he wakened regularly to his alarm; he had wakened to a weird, slow, low booming, yet the clock said six, time for the alarm. And the low boom, when it came again, seemed to come from the clock. He reached out and touched it gently, but it floated off the stand at his touch and bounced around slowly on the floor. And when he picked it up again it had stopped, nor would shaking start it. He checked the electric clock in the kitchen. This also said six o'clock, but the sweep hand did not move. In his living room the radio clock said six, but the second hand seemed stationary. That was only the beginning. Worse things were to come -- much, much worse.Lafferty is known for his original use of language, metaphor and narrative structure, as well as for his etymological wit.

This is the tale of Hannali Innominee, a "Mingo" or natural lord of the 19th-century Choctaw Indian, and a fictionalized epic history of his people in the 19th-century.
In ""The Six Fingers of Time,"" the story revolves around a man who wakes one morning to discover that time has nearly stopped for him. For every minute that passes in his experience, only a second of real time elapses. He learns how to control this unique ability, using it to his advantage in both scholarly pursuits and mischievous antics. His exploits range from playful pranks to clever schemes, showcasing a childlike curiosity in wielding such power. However, this newfound control over time is just the beginning, as he soon realizes that there are consequences for not progressing to the next stage of his abilities. The narrative explores themes of power, responsibility, and the nature of time itself, ultimately posing questions about the costs associated with manipulating time. As he navigates these challenges, the protagonist must confront the implications of his actions and the price of wielding such extraordinary power.

American Science Fiction: Four Classic Novels 1968-1969 (Loa #322): Past Master / Picnic on Paradise / Nova / Emphyrio

Celebrate classic novels of the New Wave era of sci-fi with this second collectable science fiction anthology from Library of America. Presenting 4 underrated science fiction classics from a tumultuous time in American history--including works by iconic Black author Samuel R. Delany and feminist Joanna Russ. In R. A. Lafferty's utterly idiosyncratic and uncategorizable Past Master (1968), Renaissance philosopher Thomas More is summoned to Golden Astrobe in the year 2535: Can he save the planet's troubled utopia from its soulless technological perfection and ensure the survival of the faith? Joanna Russ introduces one of SF's first and most engaging female adventurers in her taut and edgy debut novel Picnic on Paradise (1968): the tough, sardonic, unforgettable Alyx, an ancient Phoenician mercenary teleported into the future to serve as guide and bodyguard for a band of stranded space tourists. The first African American writer to make a name for himself in the genre, Samuel R. Delany was hailed as "the best science-fiction writer in the world" on the basis of Nova (1968), a white-hot, fast-paced, protocyberpunk interstellar adventure featuring a misfit crew on a high-stakes quest. Stumbling on a mysterious ancient text among his father's belongings, the son of a master woodcarver uncovers the key to revolutionary change in Jack Vance's Emphyrio (1969), a marvel of craftsmanship and visionary world-building set on remote, feudal, theocratic Halma.
Three early masterpieces from one of science fiction's great stylists.
The Dulanty family can pass for human, but they're actually alien Pucas, stranded on the remote backwater planet Earth in the tiny (and corrupt) Appalachian town of Lost Haven. The six Dulanty children (seven, if you count the disembodied Bad John) get tired of being spurned, scorned, and scapegoated by the townsfolk, and hit upon the obvious solution: they'll murder every human in the world, using hatchets, rifles, and the otherworldly killing verses known as Bagarthach, and transform the planet into a paradise for the Dulantys alone. Fortunately for the human race, the Dulanty children aren't very adept at murder, but their attempts at wholesale homicide make for a read that's alternately harrowing, hilarious, and heartwarming. Come visit the Reefs of Earth, and experience the incomparable imagination of visionary author R.A. Lafferty, a writer Jo Walton called "very weird, very clever, and impossible to forget." Praise for R.A. Lafferty R.A. Lafferty was a genius, an oddball, a madman. His stories are without precedent. -Neil Gaiman Bold, literary, and profoundly weird. -Michael Swanwick What a word slinger: what a richness of idea and image, in Irish-cadenced prose Show don't tell? The pleasure's in the telling. -Terry Bisson Lafferty is one of a kind, a magician of strange images made fleetingly recognizable, of familiar emotions made strange and new and haunting. -Nancy Kress
