When Morg Mahoney's filthy rich best friend, Heather Pierce, persuades her to accompany her on a seven-day cruise to Mexico there is a catch. It is a reunion for a group of Heather's sorority sisters from Sigma Iota Nu that she hasn't seen since graduation and she wants Morg there as support. However, Morg is not readily accepted by the sorority sisters since she's not "Greek." But when the husband of one of the sisters turns up missing overboard, Heather persuades Morg to investigate. Did he fall overboard, jump overboard to commit suicide or was he thrown overboard? Enlisting the help of two eccentric, retired twin-sister actresses and a kindly Irish priest from the passengers, as well as the ship's buff Norwegian Security Officer, Morg sets out to find the true story. The deeper she digs, the more dirty secrets she unearths about the sorority sisters, their husbands and some very strange passengers, like a former porn publisher with a cruel bent, a violent bodyguard who says he's a former Navy Seal and a pompous claimant to the Scottish throne. The only thing they all have in common is they are linked to the missing man in some way. Motives abound, but the clues are often contradictory. Then Morg herself is attacked several times, both physically and more deviously. The question becomes can she find out what happened to the husband before becoming another victim during this Greek week at sea?

Morg, prides herself on being tough. But she finds that her hard shell is vulnerable if she cares for someone too much. However, she also realizes she can't live her life as a stoic. There is a time to love. And a time to mourn. It's 1999 and Morg Mahoney has just graduated from college with a degree in Classics, which she feels qualifies her for jobs like a bank teller or a gas station cashier. When Joe Spector, a retired detective who'd been on the job with her now-deceased father that Morg calls Papa Joe, offers her a job as a private investigator, she jumps at it. Soon they become embroiled in a case that lands them smack dab in the middle of a scheme by the Mexican Mafia, La Eme. She gains a few friends and more enemies as she solves the case, while suffering a tragic loss. Fifteen years later, Morg gets an early-morning call from her filthy-rich best friend, Heather Pierce. Heather's sorority sister's fianc has disappeared on the night before their wedding. Morg drives up to Lake Tahoe to help, only to become the target of a sociopathic murderer. With a tip of the fedora to Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon, the story even includes a Sam Spade who helps Morg at key moments.

Since 1965, Donald Ayers' English Words from Latin and Greek Elements has helped thousands of students to a broader vocabulary by showing them how to recognize classical roots in modern English words. Its second edition, published in 1986, has confirmed that vocabulary is best taught by root, not rote. The importance of learning classical word roots is already acknowledged by vocabulary texts that devote chapters to them. Why a whole book based on this approach? Ayers' text exposes students to a wider range of roots, introduces new English words in context sentences, and reinforces vocabulary through exercises. It promotes more practice with roots so that students learn to use them as tools in their everyday encounters with new words. English Words is written from the standpoint of English; it neither attempts to teach students Latin or Greek nor expects a knowledge of classical languages on the part of instructors. Its success has been demonstrated at both the secondary and college levels, and it can be used effectively with students in remedial or accelerated programs. An Instructor's Manual (gratis with adoption) and a Workbook are also available.
