The rapid growth and expansion of the chemical process industry during the past century have been accompanied by a simultaneous rise in human health problems as well as material and property losses because of fires, explosions, hazardous and toxic spills, equipment failures, other accidents, and business interruptions. Concern over the potential consequences of emissions of harmful chemicals (along with catastrophic accidents) has sparked interest at both the industrial and regulatory levels in obtaining a better understanding of the potential for environmental health risks in chemical and related industries. This practical book presents and examines the environmental and health risk assessment calculations as they apply to various chemical process industries.Chemical Process Industries: Environmental and Health Risk Calculations can be used as a college text designed to provide new engineers and scientists some comprehension of the industries into which they may enter. It also serves as a useful reference for practitioners and will help them better understand the health risk aspects of various industrial operations. The chemical process industries employ mechanical, electrical, and civil engineers and a host of other scientists; these professions should also benefit from material in this book that applies to their fields of work.

There is a growing need to support undergraduate educators in the development of environmental management educational materials. Recognizing this need, the National Science Foundation funded a College Faculty Workshop on Environmental Management, that was conducted at Utah State University in July and August 1996. The principle objectives of the seminar were (1) to provide a meaningful course which would generate new ideas and innovative educational approaches in the emerging field of environmental management, and (2) to develop an applications-oriented problem workbook which would support undergraduate faculty involvement in the production of course materials. The result of this effort is Environmental Management: Problems and Solutions, an informative text on the essentials of environmental management. More than 200 structured problems presented in the book are meant to elicit a sound understanding of the basics of environmental monitoring, assessment and control. Detailed solutions to each problem, provided with each chapter, will prove useful to both the student and the instructor. This innovative text is a valuable resource for anyone involved in training of engineers and scientists in the field of environmental engineering.

Understand hydrogen as an energy resource and its potential as a dynamic solution for a carbon-neutral economy Hydrogen is an energy carrier that can be used to store, move, and deliver energy produced from other sources. It has the potential for high energy efficiency, significant environmental and social benefits, and economic competitiveness. Traditional energy resources will not be able to meet the growing energy demand, despite the advances in energy management and energy conservation—understanding how hydrogen energy can solve this problem is crucial. Hydrogen Energy: Principles and Applications provides the information needed by energy resource planners, scientists, engineers, and government officials to make informed energy-related decisions. Divided into three parts, the book opens with an introduction to various energy issues, sources, and regulations, including the basics of thermodynamics and fuel cells. The second part addresses the practical aspects of hydrogen energy, such as availability, distribution, extraction, processing, purification, transportation, transmission, and storage. The final section details the economics, energy-environmental interactions, and ethical and political considerations of the development and use of hydrogen energy, including discussion of investment and business contacts, energy option analysis and optimization, and future prospects. Covering the fundamentals of hydrogen energy with a thorough and accessible approach, the book: Equips readers with a well-rounded working knowledge of hydrogen energyCovers the latest technological advances, economic considerations, and the role hydrogen plays in a renewable energy economyOffers a pragmatic, real-world perspective rather than focusing on theoretical issuesContains nearly 50 illustrative examples ranging from elementary thermodynamic calculations to optimization applications using linear programming Hydrogen Energy: Principles and Applications is a must-read for those working in the energy industry, particularly environmental engineering and science professionals, as well as government officials, policymakers, instructors, and trainers involved in energy-related fields.

Unit Operations in Environmental Engineering

Unit Operations in Environmental Engineering

The book presents the principles of unit operations as well as the application of these principles to real-world problems. The authors have written a practical introductory text exploring the theory and applications of unit operations for environmental engineers that is a comprehensive update to Linvil Rich's 1961 classic work, "Unit Operations in Sanitary Engineering". The book is designed to serve as a training tool for those individuals pursuing degrees that include courses on unit operations. Although the literature is inundated with publications in this area emphasizing theory and theoretical derivations, the goal of this book is to present the subject from a strictly pragmatic introductory point-of-view, particularly for those individuals involved with environmental engineering. This book is concerned with unit operations, fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transfer. Unit operations, by definition, are physical processes although there are some that include chemical and biological reactions. The unit operations approach allows both the practicing engineer and student to compartmentalize the various operations that constitute a process, and emphasizes introductory engineering principles so that the reader can then satisfactorily predict the performance of the various unit operations equipment. "This is a definitive work on Unit Operations, one of the most important subjects in environmental engineering today. It is an excellent reference, well written, easily read and comprehensive. I believe the book will serve well those working in engineering disciplines including those beyond just environmental and chemical engineering. Bottom-line: A must for any technical library".—Kenneth J. Skipka, CCM
