Recent advances in MR technology permit the application of diffusion MRI outside of the brain. In this book, the authors present cases drawn from daily clinical practice to illustrate the role of diffusion sequences, along with other morphological and functional MRI information, in the work-up of a variety of frequently encountered oncological and non-oncological diseases. Breast, musculoskeletal, whole-body, and other applications are covered in detail, with careful explanation of the pros and cons of diffusion MRI in each circumstance. Quantification and post-processing are discussed, and advice is provided on how to acquire state of the art images, and avoid artifacts, when using 1.5- and 3-T magnets. Applications likely to emerge in the near future, such as for screening, are also reviewed. The practical approach adopted by the authors, combined with the wealth of high-quality illustrations, ensure that this book will be of great value to practitioners.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) radiology is a radiological subspecialty that has expanded its knowledge base and imaging capabilities with the advent of MRI, multi/detector CT, ult- sound, and PET. Prior to the advent of MRI, MSK radiologists used plain flm X-rays and arthrograms as their primary tools. The subspecialty has progressed from primary im- ing of osseous structures and indirect imaging of joint spaces, to direct imaging of soft tissue structures with direct visualization and fne defnition of MSK structures. A specialized MSK radiologist requires a sound knowledge of anatomy, pathophysi- ogy, orthopedic surgical techniques, and advancements in imaging modalities. MSK im- ing involves all aspects about anatomy, function, disease states, and aspects of interventional radiology appertaining to the MSK system including imaging in orthopedics, trauma, rheumatology, metabolic and endocrine diseases, as well as aspects of pediatrics, oncology, and sports imaging. Subspecialty training in MSK radiology must ensure competence to obtain experience in the following techniques: plain radiography, ultrasonography, CT, MRI, nuclear me- cine, bone densitometry, and fuoroscopic procedures including arthrography. MSK ra- ologists must be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the different imaging methods in each pathological condition and choose the appropriate imaging technique and/or the appropriate sequence in the investigation of specifc clinical problems.

In my ? rst days as a Radiology resident I remember myself in dire need of a book in which I could begin to study the specialty. In those days I was thirsty for radiolo- cal knowledge and was recommended a classic manual on conventional chest X-ray which was the very same the oldest radiologist of the staff had studied when he was a beginner. Unfortunately the book I was recommended covered less than 5% of the specialty as it is conceived nowadays. “Learning Diagnostic Imaging. A Teaching File” is intended to provide medical students, residents of Radiology, and anybody else beginning to be involved in the radiological world, with a useful tool that gives them a quick and comprehensive overview of Radiology. With this book, written in a user-friendly format, Radiology residents, nurses, technicians, and medical students would see their ? rst radiolo- cal images in a sort of introduction of what will become their professional activities in the rest of their lives.

After the successful publication of Medical English, Radiological English and Primary Care English by Springer, I considered it a top priority to keep on writing medical English books by specialties, which could become useful tools for health care professionals and medical students all over the world. Being a cardiovascular radiologist myself, Cardiovascular English was one of the first titles that came to my mind when I began to think about a series of medical English books by specialties. In spite of the fact that c- diovascular diseases are my main area of interest, I would not have dared co-write a book on cardiovascular English without the enthusiastic support of Dr. Mejía. This book project started in Benalmadena when, during the dinner after a 1-day course on cardiovascular imaging, Dr. Manuel Concha, a pro- nent figure in cardiac surgery and one of the pioneers of cardiac tra- plants in my country, and who was aware of my idea of writing a card- vascular English book, introduced Dr. Mejía to me saying “Ramón, Sergio is the person you are looking for.” He was absolutely right. Sergio Mejía has been enthusiastically c- mitted to the book project since its inception. Like its predecessors, Cardiovascular English is not written by English teachers and aimed at English students, but it is written by doctors and aimed at doctors.
