Orthodontics is a dynamic and evolving field that requires a deep understanding of both fundamental principles and being abreast with newer advancements. In this digital era, there is an endless access to published literature and books at the disposal of students and professionals. Especially for the student pursuing postgraduation in Orthodontics, shortlisting important and relevant published literature from this vast resource is often a dilema and requires investment of considerable time. This book has been written with the postgraduate students in mind in the form of simplified notes on important topics in orthodontics using an exhaustive reference to the relevant literature. This book will be first of a series, with each book to follow covering several important topics in orthodontics. These notes can be helpful in preparing academic seminars or can be used to brush up important topics at the time of examination. It is hoped that this effort will appeal to all students of orthodontics.

Shade selection is a highly complex process that requires an interaction of scientific, physiological, psychological and artistic factors for an accurate outcome. Scientific principles related to light and colour play a key role in determining the tooth shade perceived. However, the perception of colour is dependent upon human vision capabilities which can alter the shade captured by the eyes or its image made in the brain. Any vision related deficiency can seriously affect the reliability of the shades selected or formulated. Furthermore, artistic qualities of an individual can modify the way a shade is observed. The need is not only to have proper training and setup for the routinely used visual method but also to properly understand the various factors involved and their influence on shade selections. This can ensure reliable, repeatable and accurate shade matches on a day-to-day basis.

Traditionally considered as a treatment modality for the teen and adolescent, there has been in significant increase in the number of adults seeking orthodontic treatment. This increased demand for treatment has been due to changed lifestyles and increased awareness about orthodontic therapy. It is important that the orthodontist realizes that the treatment needs, clinical procedures and patient priorities for the adult orthodontic patient differ significantly from the young. While the young may seek orthodontic correction for aesthetics, the adults may prioritize treatment for restoring normal occlusal function as well as treatment efficiency and convenience. Advances in orthodontics have made treatment more comfortable and more successful than ever for people of all ages. Collaborating orthodontic treatment with other dental specialties to provide multidisciplinary dental therapy has allowed better management of the more complicated and unique requirements of the adult. This work outlines the scope, benefits, the available treatment modalities, the effectiveness and limitations of adult orthodontic treatment.
