Party B and Japanese Prisoner of War Propaganda gives the first full account of the experiences of a group of a thousand wartime British and Australian prisoners of the Japanese, ‘Party B’, who in 1942 were shipped from Changi camp in Singapore to Korea for propaganda purposes. It traces their experiences from their arrival in Singapore until release. In doing so, it offers the first account of Japanese POW propaganda during the Pacific War. The men of Party B were exploited for every aspect of Japanese propaganda. They were filmed, photographed, recorded and publicly humiliated. They were made to write letters home and messages for radio broadcasts telling the outside world of their humane treatment; journalists interviewed them for accounts of Japanese prowess in battle to raise the morale of the home audience. They were given essays to write and questionnaires to answer, designed to yield information useful for creating propaganda. They were also allowed to keep diaries which the Japanese read to gain an insight into the enemy psychology. As well as examining the three Korean camps, Keijo, Jinsen and Konan, the book also explores conditions at Mukden (Hoten) camp, where a hundred men from the party were later sent. The camp has become notorious for the visits by the biological warfare group, Unit 731, and the book adds to our knowledge of this camp by demonstrating that a great deal of the ‘evidence’ that has been claimed as proof of experiments on the prisoners in fact relate to the camp’s propaganda function. Using archival evidence from the International Committee of the Red Cross headquarters in Geneva, the book also adds significantly to knowledge of the organisation’s work during World War ll, arguing that that the organisation was only allowed a presence in Japanese territories for propaganda purposes.

Population health management is being increasingly adopted by health systems yet the importance of primary health care in influencing population mortality and the mechanisms that explain it are not well understood. Too often, primary health care is regarded as a service for minor health problems and for managing access to secondary care. This limited view is no longer tenable and it is time to be much more ambitious about the place of primary health care in health systems worldwide. In delivering and planning health care and in re-building health systems after the pandemic, practitioners and policymakers in low-, middle- and high-income countries need evidence on how primary health care affects population mortality and practical advice to effect change. Primary Health Care and Population Mortality fulfils this need. Drawing on his long experience as both a practitioner and researcher, the author Richard Baker describes how primary health is crucial to the effect of health systems on population mortality, including its potential for reducing inequalities in mortality. This accessible new book will provide invaluable information to leaders in service development and delivery, academics in primary health care and those working within international organisations that are promoting primary health care for improving population health. It will also be of practical value to general practitioners, primary health care nurses and managers and public health staff.

The Science of the Self: Based on the Integration of Biological, Behavioral, Social and Mathematical Sciences
This volume represents a NEW SCIENCE, an actual integration of the physical (i.e., evolutionary biology) sciences and the social sciences (psychology, sociology, and economics) through mathematical and falsifiable proofs. The Science of the Self is the type of break through that has been demanded ever since Cosmides, Tooby and Barkow wrote their "step-by-step" guide for "integrating evolutionary biology with psychology, and psychology with cultural phenomena" in 1989 an achievement like science of the Self has been a conceptual possibility but not a probability. In fact it has taken the authors 15 years and $1.5 million, including 5 prior volumes of documented discovery along the way, to reach the point of declaring an actual science. The first chapter of the book begins by listing the six elements required for establishment of a science. Each of the following chapters outlines how that requirement has been satisfied, and refers to the detailed material in an Appendix (which is often taken from one of the earlier volumes in the series, Bourdieu's Demon.) This style of organization enables the reader to move quickly through the logical thought process during the first read. The style also enables the authors to share some of their sense of discovery as they move from one level of insight to another, from one type of model to another. Especially informative is how project is able to move from the strictly sociological x-y plane of the original motives to the x-y-z space of Dr. Stuart Kauffman's N/k evolutionary biology model in which the energy of the motives fuels and informs information-seeking behavior. This Chapter summarizes the prior book The Santa Fe Conjecture and constitutes the heart of how the integration of the science occured. It resulted in the discovery of the M Function, which leads to the discovery of the Self. Dr. Kauffman is a MacArthur Fellow, a genius, a polymath and a bit of a hero in this whole story. He makes the connection between Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiment's and evolutionary biology by the formula he establishes in the N/k model. It turns out that the 2500 respondents in the sample conform to these guidelines, to differing degrees thus forming three "laminates" or three information cultures based on a combination of (the M Function of) the mean of their Personal Drivers and their Information behaviors and content. The authors have developed a version of the original Self-survey which enables any reader of this book who visits their website (listed in the book) and pays an administrative fee to obtain a profile of their own personal Self
A Chronicle of the Kings of England, From the Time of the Romans Government, to the Death of King James the First. By Sir Richard Baker, Knt. With a Continuation to the Year 1660
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.Rich in titles on English life and social history, this collection spans the world as it was known to eighteenth-century historians and explorers. Titles include a wealth of travel accounts and diaries, histories of nations from throughout the world, and maps and charts of a world that was still being discovered. Students of the War of American Independence will find fascinating accounts from the British side of conflict. ++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. A Theory of the Self is based on primary research which reveals that individuals define themselves through decisions that involve five groups of motives among which the most important involves being "themself, being happy and suiting their personality." Other categories are Economics, Following Norms, Self-respect, and Projecting and Image. The Self is a function which manages the internal process and the interface with the external world. The Self is superimposed on another function which is consciousness itself.

The M Function Based on NK Formula of Stuart Kauffman Richard Baker and Michael Baron, Ph.D. M= f (e, in) is a statement of the NK formula proposed by Dr. Kauffman as the process by which "an agent may search a landscape by manipulating various characteristics of itself." It is a statement of theory proposed in a mathematical form that generates "the invisible hand" Dr. Kauffman predicted that we were able to populate with data from our sample. As a result we have been able to empirically validate the research originally presented in Bourdieu's Demon (See Figures 1 and 2) in The Santa Fe Conjecture, in the tests reported in Premium Knowledge and most recently in the M (Meme) Function Careful analysis of real life data from 2500 plus affluent individuals reported in our first volume demonstrates that these respondents did just as sociologists and biologist Richard Dawkins predicted. They constructed complexes of objects, images and relations (LifeStyles) to match the visions and memories in their minds. In our presentation we review the how each of the very recognizable elements of the M Function formula (M= f (e, in)) works in our daily lives: -"e" are the five categories of personal needs that are the sources of all energy; -"I" are the multiple sources of information and personal experience, and the rates and ratios in which we consume them. -Most significantly "f" is the overall algorithm that (in the chart, above) determines if our needs are consuming and transforming information into memes at an overall red, yellow or green "rate" and that spins us into a socio-economic "laminate" with similar "cells." The M Function is a dynamic force within individuals and among individuals. Because the M Function is a pure mixture of energy and information it is restructuring the economy as well society. The "division of labor" is now based on a division of information and a division of communication. As the empirical validation of the M Function demonstrated, significant increases in communication and commercial efficiency result from application of M Function Memes. The NK model is a mathematical model described by its primary inventor Stuart Kauffman as a "tunably rugged "fitness landscape. "Tunable ruggedness" captures the intuition that both the overall size of the landscape and the number of its local "hills and valleys" can be adjusted via changes to its two parameters. All of the approximately 300 variables that were included for use as raw data in M Formula items (e) and (i), all qualitative terms drawn from primary research of American culture
