Lifelong Learning - Signs, Discourses, Practices

Lifelong Learning - Signs, Discourses, Practices

Robin Usher; Richard Edwards

Springer

This text explores the different ways in which the various social practices in which people participate becomes signed as learning, how and why that occurs and with what consequences. It takes seriously the linguistic turn in social theory to draw upon semiotics and poststructuralism through which to explore the significance of lifelong learning as an emerging discourse in education. The text explores the different ways in which learning conveys meaning and is given meaning. Given this, lifelong learning therefore is a way, and a significant way, in which learning is fashioned. The text then explores the notion that, if learning is lifelong and lifewide, what precisely is learning as distinct from other social practices and how those practices are given meaning as learning.

What's the problem with literacy at college? How might everyday literacy be harnessed for educational ends?Based on the first major study of literacy practices in colleges in the UK, this book explores the reading and writing associated with learning subjects across the college curriculum. It investigates literacy practices in which students engage outside of college, and teaching and learning strategies through which these can help support the curriculum. With insightful analyses of innovative practices, it considers ways of changing teaching practices to enable students to draw upon their full potential.Recent research work has challenged the myth of individual student deficit, arguing cogently that people have ‘funds of knowledge’ from diverse and vibrant cultural roots, and that these have been misguidedly disqualified by the education system. It has claimed that different ‘ways with words’ can provide valuable resources for learning. However, the empirical exploration of this claim has lagged far behind the theoretical debate. Improving Learning in College resolves this by showing the integrity and richness of the literacy practices of a significant population, not previously the focus of such research: those who take vocational and academic college courses in colleges. It addresses an issue which has not until now been developed within this research tradition: that of how these practices can not only be valued and validated, but mobilised and harnessed to enhance learning in educational settings. This book will interest all teachers, teacher-educators and researchers concerned with post-compulsory education and vocational education in compulsory schooling.

Sharing Your Treasure: A Workbook for Mindfulness Innovators is a practical companion to the Fieldbook for Mindfulness Innovators, the celebrated guide to adapting mindfulness-based approaches for new audiences. These publications are born out of a recognition that innovation is both healthy and necessary for mindfulness practices to become more effective and accessible. The Workbook offers an opportunity for mindfulness teachers to reflect on what they want to share, providing a framework for exploring the experience and knowledge they bring, and honing in on the students they want to reach. Informed by a pilot course of workshops, it draws on the insights of participants as well as distilling the expertise of the authors. Through the structure of the innovations mandala, readers will consider their personal steps towards 'sharing their treasure' and create a written record of their ideas and intention, to support them on their journey. Great Plains Homesteaders

Great Plains Homesteaders

Great Plains Homesteaders tells the epic story of how millions of people, white and Black, women and men, young and old, and of many different religions, languages, and ethnic groups, moved to the Great Plains to claim land. Most were poor, so the government’s offer of “free” farms through the Homestead Act of 1862 seemed a godsend. The settlers found harsh growing conditions and many perils-including exploitation by railroads and banks, droughts, prairie fires, and bitter winters-yet they persisted. The settlers successfully “proved up” nearly a million claims between the 1860s and the 1920s. They filled up the immense grassland, transforming it into productive farms, the beginning of the region’s agriculture. They also created a distinct culture that continues to shape their estimated fifty million descendants living today. Every homesteader’s experience was different, as particular and distinct as the people were themselves. Yet their collective story, with all its hardships and toil, its ambitions and setbacks, its fresh starts and failures and successes, is central to the American experience.

They exercised their rights under the Homestead Act to gain title to 650,000 acres, settling in all of the Great Plains states. Some created Black homesteader communities such as Nicodemus, Kansas, and DeWitty, Nebraska, while others, including George Washington Carver and Oscar Micheaux, homesteaded alone. All sought a place where they could rise by their own talents and toil, unencumbered by Black codes, repression, and violence. In the words of one Nicodemus descendant, they found “a place they could experience real freedom,” though in a racist society that freedom could never be complete. Their quest foreshadowed the epic movement of Black people out of the South known as the Great Migration. In this first account of the full scope of Black homesteading in the Great Plains, Richard Edwards and Jacob K. Friefeld weave together two distinct strands: the narrative histories of the six most important Black homesteader communities and the several themes that characterize homesteaders’ shared experiences. Using homestead records, diaries and letters, interviews with homesteaders’ descendants, and other sources, Edwards and Friefeld illuminate the homesteaders’ fierce determination to find freedom-and their greatest achievements and struggles for full equality.

We were walking this journey together, yet alone. Two siblings from a close-knit, boisterous family of six. There is nothing like the camaraderie of family to give you the determination to persevere in spite of any obstacle. We were overwhelmed by the disease of multiple sclerosis as well as other autoimmune diseases. Our outward appearance of healthiness was deceiving. Unbeknownst to us, the disease of multiple sclerosis would eventually consume mobility, sight, memory, fine motor skills, speech, and so much more. The emotional suffering that we have endured was compounded by physical ailments. Many incidents of failing health and loss have occurred over the years. Every nuance of each symptom has vanished at least from our minds. The invisible physical effects still linger in our bodies. Great Googa Mooga is a testament to moving forward, having grieved the loss of bodily function, but coming to an acceptance of what is. Every time we felt that we could not go on, our strength was bolstered by the kind deeds of others and prayer. This disabling and progressive disease was no match for two people resolute to live their lives.
